Hello!

Well considering this is my first time posting, I might as well introduce myself. I'm 15, and hail from la belle ville de Montreal, and, In just three weeks and one day, my cruising career shall begin on the Veendam to Alaska! (and yes, I know Alaskan cruises generally have an older crowd, but my ideal vacation will be spent reading a book in the Explorations cafe, sipping a latte and looking out at the scenery. So I fear not boredome :P).

I'm actually the one who research all of my family's travel (two parents and me), and through my obsessive searching, got a fantastic deal on HAL, that being the reason we're going. I've spent a lot of time reading these boards, and have gathered a wealth of information. But I was left with one question: WHAT TO WEAR TO BREAKFAST!?! Either in the lido, or the main dining room. I can't exactly see people getting into tuxes or gowns for scrambled eggs or french toast, but are there any guidelines?

Now I know this might sound like one of those obsessive cruise questions like 'will my hair straightener from Nepal work in the bathroom?!!?' or 'do they serve certified organic brazillian dark roast coffee in the cafe??!' But I didn't feel like researching it extensively. And besides- you all wanted to meet me right? :D

Anyways thanks for any input!!

Brandon

Welcome to Cruise Critic, and welcome to your first cruise . . . I'll bet it won't be the last!

For breakfast and lunch in either the Lido or the dining room, you can slip on a pair of shorts, a t-shirt and sandals and you will be fine. Evening in the dining room requires long pants (for the most part, and I really don't want to start a debate over this), Wear what is comfortable, keeping in mind you are travelling on a lovely cruise ship doing things many others don't have the opportunity to.

Smooth Sailing! :):):)

Welcome to the Cruise Critic Board. I have cruised on the Veendam and you will enjoy the ship. Breakfast and lunch are casual so you may wear comfortable clothing however no bathrobes and bathing suits must be covered. You have to wear some type of shoes (yes, I've actually seen people go into the Lido barefoot and the were immediately told to exit and find shoes).

Have a great cruise and let us know if you have any other questions!

Brandon, Ger (and Duck Tune!) have answered your breakfast question and you are absolutely correct A+ on your idea of a wonderful way to spend the day! You'll find more great reading spots as well; try the Crow's Nest on a non-scenic cruising day (everybody will be up there on a scenic cruising day) and there are some little niches around the lounges where you can read and nobody will bother you. Power is available all around too, in case you want to read on your laptop or Kindle or whatever. Great library on the ship, too!

I hope you have a wonderful time!

Why, to give CC folks another topic to talk about, of course. ;)

Welcome to our merry little group. Have a great time in The Great Land. And when you return, come back and tell us all about it!

Brandon,
Love your sense of humor. I see you're from Montreal (I live in Upstate NY, not far from you). Wanted to make sure you realize that the Maasdam, which is sister ship to the Veendam, was in Montreal today and will be there almost every other Saturday this season. Well, they used to be a lot more similar looking before the changes to the Veendam, but you will get an idea of your ship if you have the chance to go to Old Port and take a look at the Maasdam.

My son is now 20, and he's been cruising with us on HAL for more than 10 years. We've had some great cruises together.

Brandon,

It's very considerate of you to wear appropriate clothes to breakfast; it's too bad others are not as considerate.

Recently on the Volendam, there was an old overweight guy with a hairy back who would come into the Lido wearing only a Speedo. He would stand in the aisle for several minutes, on clear display to all, chatting with his buddy who was having breakfast. Ewwwww!

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

For breakfast and lunch on an Alaskan cruise -- you can slacks and t-shirts or polo shirts in both the Lido and the dining room. Unless Alaska is really havin a heat wave -- doubt if you will need shorts. But we always take a pair a piece -- just in case.

Welcome aboard, Brandon.

I've noticed no one has been able to answer your last two questions . . . :D

I do agree, Montreal is beautiful. I thought that even when we were there one New Year's Eve, and it was 10 below (farenheit).

If you have access to the Neptune Lounge - please please DO NOT wear your bathrobe and slippers:eek:. On both of our HAL cruises, we were in the Neptune when pax walked in wearing robe/slippers and it was GROSS!

We were surprised that some pax felt it was appropriate to enter the Neptune dressed as above......

You'll have a great cruise!

Welcome to CC Brandon. There may be more young people than you thought, as Alaska tends to bring out the families. I hope that you enjoy your first cruise. Please come back and post your impressions.

Well, now, as stated by some on many a dress code thread: "just wear what you are comfortable in and do';t worry about the stares and what others think!" :D

WatchDiva - I totally agree. I see lots of people in the NL wearing a robe and slipper when it would only take a few minutes to put on something else.

Would people go out in public to eat breakfast or get coffee dressed like that at home???

PS. Brandon welcome to CC. Have a great cruise and report back. Also good luck on being a future pilot - my son is in the pilot program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
