This will be our first Alaska Cruise, RT Seattle on Zaandam. So...does it make a difference which side of the ship you're on?

I havn't been in the Zanndam Yet, We cruise to Hawaii on her Oct 4th 2009.

But have done the Alaska cruise on the Ryndam, Out of Vancouver though. I would suggest the the Starboard side would be the best on the outbound Portion. But either side is fine. When on the inside passage. We did ours at a last min. Decision and had inside cabin. There was only one time where we missed some sea otters because we couldnt get on deck in time. Wonderfull Cruise be sure to do the Train in Skagway. Was the best excursion ever.

And this is my 4th. cruise withe Hal :) Sure hope you guys have fun..

if you have a choice (and a balcony) starboard is definitely the way to go north, much better scenery. Although both sides are lovely, starboard is better espcially from your own veranda in your bathrobe!:)

Just got back this past Saturday from the Zaandam. We had room 7026 port side and all I can say is the views from that room where very nice.
You will love the Zaandam. Great crew, good food. We really enjoyed The cruise. The weather was outstanding. Saw lots of wildlife.

Part of the time you'll be out at sea in the open water - that looks the same from both sides. When you are closer to shore, it is a toss up between mainland on one side and islands on the other. When you are in the really scenic, areas you'll want to be out on the open deck - not limited to what happens to be on 'your' side. We've had balconies on two of our five Alaskan cruises. We really didn't use them as the vast views from the open decks were SO better. Enjoy!

I'll second Mary Ellen's "it really doesn't matter". If you're in a scenic area the best place to be is up forward someplace - outside if the weather is good, or in the Crow's Nest if it is cold or rainy.
