Has anyone heard anything about the possibility that either the Maasdam or the Zuiderdam might begin to sail out of New York year round for the Caribbean beginning in the fall of 2005?

I think that depends on when the Pax Terminal gets its makeover finished.

I did hear a rumor (probably just that) that in January of 2006 that the new NOORDAM would be sailing from NY, but nothing about the fall of 2005. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Hello KK,
It does look as if the new NOORDAM will be doing round-trip sailings from New York in 2006. Most likely alternating 10 & 11 night sailings. Happy Sailings...Leslie Swiger:)

I have been told by management and I will not give names. You can rest asure however, that what I post will be correct. Happy Sailings..Leslie Swiger:)

The only thing better than roundtrip New York to the Caribbean would be BOSTON roundtrip.

I got my information Ocean & Cruise News.
Even if the new Noordam would sail out of there it would be great. At least we still have some flights left to NY.

Seeing that HAL has trips scheduled for the Zuiderdam out of Fort Lauderdale up until December 2005 I doubt that they would be changing to the NYC port anytime before that. Personally, I would LOVE to sail out of New York on the Zuiderdam.

I just leafed through the most recent edition I have (October 15) and must have missed it. I didn't find any mention of HAL sailing year round from New York to the Caribbean. Maybe it was in a different issue?

I'd be there in a minute...on any DAM ship. :)
There's something magical about sailing from New York. And I would certainly do it in winter.

I'd be happy to do it in winter. One day out of New York we should be off the coast of Virginia or slightly further south; wake up on the second morning and be in the Bahamas.

The information I got was in an e-mail from Ocean Cruise while we were on the Statendam.
s7s - don't you get the Ocean & Cruise News weekly news via e-mail as well as their monthly 'magazine'??

Remember HAL is notorious for changing schedules. We have sailed HAL on quite a few cruises and have had schedule and port changes quite a lot.

Yes.....I get those KK and, honestly, I hardly read them most of the time. That's what I get for skimming by and not paying attention. :( I sure hope HAL really is going to do that. It would be GREAT IMO but I'm not holding my breath, YET.

That would be quite the port change, especially since it would be the embarkation port, it's not like changing the itinerary, say skipping Grand Cayman for another port. Have HAL done that big of a change before?
Also, all those cruises are scheduled as 7 day trips, it would not be very worthwhile to leave from NYC on a 7 day Caribbean itinerary. 10 days, sure, but 7 wouldn't give you much of the Caribbean experience. I'm not trying to refute you or anything (I hope I'm not coming off that way) I just find it really hard to believe that they would do something that major with a schedule already out. Of course I am kind of new to this all so I guess I could be a bit naive to the unpredictability of it all.

I think what is pertinent here in evaluating if it is possible is to remember that the ship suggested as being the one to do that itinerary would be the new Noordam. I am not sure, but I believe she debuts January 2006. If that is the case, she could possibly leave Fincantieri, do the crossing, start cruising from New York for some number of months. To the best of my knowledge, there are not yet any published itineraries for Noordam. Yet. Please correct me if I am wrong.

We have had several schedule changes - from west itineraires to southern - port changes - yes - price changes - yes.
Anything can happen.
We booked a cruise - bought our airline fare - and within a few days, HAL changed one of our itineraries completely!!
Yes, anything can happen - anytime!!.

Oh, God ... I would love that. New York is but a 1.5 hour train ride for me. Much better (not to mention cheaper) than a flight to Fort Lauderdale.
I'll keep my fingers crossed.

We were told by the Captain at a cocktail party in our suite that the Noordam
will be sailing out of NY in 2006. But when Willem (HM) looked at the schedule for me he could not find it, although he said he had had a notice about it. I guess we will just have to wait and see AND PRAY.

When I first found Cruise Critic---almost four years ago, now---the big topic of discussion was can HAL pleeze start cruising year-round from NYC. IIRC the thread went on for several pages and would not die.
It looks like the support for the idea that was given then is as strong as ever. I love sailing out of NYC and would even consider a Caribbean cruise if NYC were the embarkation port.

I too, love sailing out of New York. An easy drive of only about 3 hours. I would consider almost any itinerary just to sail from New York.

Even some of us in California would like it. A 10/11 day cruise and also to have 3/4 days in the Big Apple. Who could ask for anything more?
For those of us who still work we tend to take vacations in week intervals. Flying to FLL for a 7 day cruise is a little hectic.
I did a 10 day New England/Canada cruise on the Rotterdam a couple of years ago and I thought the NYC embark over at a pier on the Hudson about 48th Street was very efficient.
I think that both NCL and RCI are doing Caribbean departures out of NY or NJ.

As we were driving past the west side cruise terminal yesterday I said to my wife and kids that there were rumors about HAL out of NY...my wife said no problem...she'll "patch it" for the one day down and back that the waters may be rough. We are 15 minutes from the terminal.....so YOU KNOW what is on my Christmas List!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only some of us. Others of us feel that a week at the dentist's office is better than a day in NYC....

It sounds great to me, but it would surely have to be a 10-14 day cruise from NY to the Caribbean. In the winter a good 2+ chilly days each way (possibly 3, judging by the Norfolk port experience in the Atlantic in winter from the Carib to southern Va.).
Isn't the Noordam to be a Vista ship? Don't they normally do 7 day cruises as they are so large and need more pax to fill 'er up?

Yeah!
No more stinkin' airplane for me!
God, I hate to fly ... I know it sounds crazy when you look at my avatar ... but I absolutely despise flying in commercial airliners ... where I feel more like cattle than a passenger. I much prefer the environment of a hop on the Metroliner!
If this is true, New York is where I'm gonna be picking up most of my cruises in the future.

I have heard the maiden voyage is scheduled (tentatively) for 2/4/06. It is supposed to be a 10-day Venice to Athens cruise.
Additionally, the Noordam is to remain in Europe until October 2006. She is then supposed to be doing Caribbean cruises, not sure from what port.

That sounds logical except for the time of year. February/March?? Sailing the Med? Europe? Certainly 'off season' so won't be many crowds.

I thought it was a little odd too. :) I will also pass along anything I hear and hope others will do the same - we are anxiously awaiting the debut, so any news is of interest to me.
I'm certain many things will change between now and then, but I still like to know what plans are being made for this ship.

If she does not sail from NYC, there will be a number of disappointed CCs. I hope that our expectations have not been raised for nothing.
