We are planning our first Alaskan cruise in Jun 2005 on the Veendam and we can find no information the the Holland web site about smoking. We have someone going that is very sensitime to smoke.

Smoking Allowed: in all cabins, in designated exterior areas on one side of the ship only (such as at Lido pool and outside Lido pool eating area), in designated areas of public lounges/bars, in the casino

Smoking NOT Allowed: in any interior dining room

FROM THE HAL WEBSITE:

On-board Policies

Smoking
For the comfort of all of our guests, designated smoking and nonsmoking areas are available in most lounges. Smoking is not permitted at any time in dining areas. Our ships do not have "nonsmoking" staterooms; however, all rooms are thoroughly cleaned after each cruise to assure the comfort of our guests. All showrooms are nonsmoking during performances.

Peaches has given you the accurate information on the smoking areas of the ships.

I have not found smoke to be a problem; (I don't go through the casino---others have said that area gets smoky). For the most part, then, the ventilation systems seem to work quite well.
The cabins are cleaned well enough that I have never found a lingering stale-smoke smell. If you were to find a left-over odor the steward can take extra steps to refresh the room.

We have never had a problem with stale smoke in the cabin. But I take along a room deordorizer that can be used in the cabin as well as the bathroom.
