View Full Version : Several random questions

After soaking up GOBS of useful information on these boards the last six months, my first ever cruise is only nine days away! So, before I sail away on the Amsterdam to exotic South America, there are a couple of questions I haven't seen addressed:
First, I've booked an Outside Large cabin (#3368, Category C.) Please, please tell me the window opens. The picture in the brochure shows a medium-sized rounded window with a split down the middle. I'm assuming that the split means it opens side to side. I'm always claustrophobic if unable to open a window but with my Mom and I (both smokers) in a small room, I'll be sleeping on deck if we can't get fresh air coming in.
Second question is: are there ample hangers in the closet or, if not, are they easy to come by? I usually bring some extras when I travel as even the nicest hotels seem to skimp on this amenity but obviously don't want to use up valuable luggage space if it's not necessary.
Are there alarm clocks in the cabins? Wake-up calls? (seems unlikely, but you never know.)
Thanks for all your help...

Sorry, but your windows will not open. You'll need to step out on deck for fresh air.
There should be plenty of hangars. If not, your cabin steward will be happy to get you some more.
There aren't any alarm clocks in the cabins, but you can program a wakeup call from your telephone. We have never used the service, though. We always carry our own travel alarm with us.
Enjoy your cruise!

No windows open in the outside cabin categories, sorry. If you want to enjoy fresh air or the outside from your cabin, perhaps you should look at a mini-suite.
Enjoy your cruise, the Amsterdam is a spectacular ship.

This is precisely why I will not pay for outside cabins. If you can't open the window, then they are really not that much better than the cheaper inside stateroom.
Hate to tell you, but no ... the windows do not open. To have fresh air, you have no choice but to move up to a balcony cabin.
As for wake-up calls, there are instructions provided in your stateroom for setting a wakeup call ... you do it yourself by dialing a code on the telephone system. I wish I could be of more help, but I never used them.
There are no alarm clocks in the room ... something I still can't figure out. Seems no cruise ship provides them and I can't understand why they are standard in a hotel room, but not on a ship. Huh?
I have a little battery-operated travel alarm clock that I just bring onboard with me, and it has served me fine on my past cruises.
Hangers are usually plentiful. At least I never ran short on my two-week cruise.
Blue skies and have an awesome cruise!

Your question on the alarm clock was answered but be aware your cabin will have no clock at all.

I am surprised that when you booked your cabin you didn't ask your TA about the windows. He/she should have been able to tell you that the cabin caetgory that you chose has windows that can not be opened. It's probably too late for you to upgrade to a balcony cabin where you can open the door to let in fresh air.
We always take 2 travel alarms with us - one for each side of the bed. Got them cheap at Office Depot.
The Amsterdam, I think, is the prettiest ship of the entire fleet.
Have a good cruise.

It could not be more simple to program a wake-up call on your telephone. The menu on the phone gives instructions, but all you do is -if you want a wake-up call at 7 AM, punch in 0700; 8:30 AM, punch in 0830- and so forth. And you get the call exactly when you told the system to wake you.

And duct tape to seal the gap in the glass in case the wind is blowing, too. You might check at Home Depot for the self-adhesive leather hinges. ;)

Just realized, the glass is double paned. That makes it a bit more difficult. We'll have to frame the window now.

Let the marine mammals take care of themselves, it's the human passengers we should be concerned with!

I think I'll just build out a verandah. Maybe with a lap pool for the seals?

OH! A place where the seals can do laps!
I had this really weird image in my mind when I read that......

Do laps? Don’t be silly. I see them sitting on the edge of the pool, balancing plates of petit fours on their laps!

I asked my cabin steward if there was a way to get a clock...I forgot my little travel clock and also forgot that most ships do not have them in the rooms. I am anal about waking up in the middle of the night and needing to know the time. Sapto the cabin steward brought me his own little clock! Said not to worry he wakes up automatically! I gave him an additional gratuity. He told me the reason they don't have them is that they travel through so many time zone changes switching the clocks is tedious. I would also imagine people would expect them to be switched for them and then loose it when they were late! RCI (don't hit me now for saying this) has a LCD clock on the phone. It does not light up, and you need a little pen light to see it at night.

They must be attached to a computerized system. I have watched the clock change the time a couple of times. :)

I must have been slumming :) I was on the Verhanda Deck Cat. B deluxe outside balcony...I usually opt for an aft balcony cabin, and if I can get a corner aft all the better except on some ships this is an obstructed view so you have to watch that when booking. I just need to remember my travel clock, I did rememeber the bungee cord and the power strip for plugging in my cameras.
