View Full Version : Taking Wine on board HAL

I just read in HAL's "Board Procedures" that: beverages may not be brought on board during embarkation or in ports of call.

Does this mean we cannot take on board our favorite wine to enjoy in our cabin or that we may not purchase wine (or other bottled rums, etc.) at our various ports to bring on board?

On Princess we were allowed to bring wine on board & consume that in our cabins. So that's why I would like clarification.

Thanks,

Lois

You're able to bring wine & champagne on board AND back to your room to consume while on the ship. :D

For ANY other type of liquor: you are able to bring it on board (ie. purchased liquor from a port of call) but it is taken and given back to you the night before disembarkation.

I asked the same question a couple of weeks ago ;)

On our Maasdam cruise they did not confiscate any alcohol purchased in our last port, San Juan. Lots of people were purchasing there, but they did not have anything set up to take it at the gangway. It was only noon, and still had two more sea days left.

wine and champagne..bring all you want. You may consume in your cabin. If you bring to the dining room, $15. corkage fee. We received a bottle from our travel agent..because wine came from on-board supply, no corkage fee in the dining room.

All hard liquor was indeed collected from ports of call and held until final day on board. At least, the liquor that they noticed you carrying back. Pints, nips, etc. .. they didn't bother doing anything about.

(Just off the Volendam yesterday) Still in mourning..wishing we were back on board...

There was a table set set up at the gnagway on the Statendam with a big note on it indicating that hard liquor would be taken away and returned the last night of the cruise. No one was manning the table. And after a few ports people were bringing wine AND hard liquor onto the ship.

I have know this to happen. On a recent sailing I was given duty free liquor in the cardboard suitcase to bring back to my cabin. It is suppose to be delivered on the last day of the cruise. The clerk said they were short of storage space.

I've read numerous posts on this subject but nothing more recent than 2008.
But what is the latest policy?
My wife and I have been on three HAL cruises and on the last one (2009 16-days to the North Atlantic, Greenland, etc.) we had two bottles in our luggage at embarkation, and they took it out and returned it to us at the end of the cruise.
We have signed up for the HAL 24-day cruise on May 21, 2012, and we would like to know the latest rule.

We will have 100 days on HAL embarking on the Maasdam in January...and we've always been allowed to embark with wine, soda, and water. I don't know that has changed...

We always bring a box or two, depending on cruise length, of decent tasting wine on board. Nice to have while dressing in the evening or after returning to stateroom.

Sometimes just pack it in the suitcase to avoid lugging it around, especially if not flying in. Then space available for misc purchases during the trip.

Best ever was wine we found in a shop in Tuscany, plain brown boxes with name and year written by marker on the box. Sure enjoyed that on our Transatlantic home from Civitavecchia.

Thanks to all the posters for the wine info. We'll definitely be bringing some on board when we embark in Amsterdam on May 21, 2012.

This has to be along with formal nights one of the most asked and aswered questions so there are loads of threads on bringing wine aboard on the HAL forum since '08.
