Just got off the Zuiderdam on Sat. and we had a room safe in our closet. We were in a Cat. SS but I think all cabins have them.

All cabins on all the ships have room safes.

Are the safes on the Zui opened by magnetic strip? (credit card, grocery store card, etc?) Or with your room key? Or a numeric code?
Just want to see if I need my grocery store 'frequent buyer' card...

On the Oosterdam you put in your own choice of a 4 digit code and I'm sure all the Vista ships are the same. This is the best kind- no key, no credit card needed.

Thanks, Peaches! I couldn't remember what we had on Maasdam last year - think it was the magnetic strip thing. Most DEFINITELY prefer the 4-digit code! Had that on another line I believe.
And while I'm thinking about it... On the Zui, does your room key double as your onboard credit card (ship card) as well?

Not Peaches but yes it does, and the safe use a 4 number code :)

Please be sure not to pack the safe too full! We inadvertently did this and could not get it opened. Ship services had to come up to our cabin to get it open. The whole process took about an hour but it was our fault. I was just glad they were able to open it as we had all our money in it and wanted to go to the casino!! :D

Wonder why it took an hour to open your safe?
We had the batteries die in several safes - the worst time was when we had just arrived in St Thomas and my credit cards were in the safe. The mechanic was there in 5 - 10 minutes. He slipped his own device in to open the saf, replaced the batteries and we were in business again.

Well KK I must admit it wasn't all the ship crews fault....First we fiddled around with it for about 15 minutes.......then called ship services....took them about 20 minutes to get there........they then fiddled around with it for another 10 minutes before calling maintainance........another 10 minutes went by before maintainance arrived...10 minutes for him to get it opened and finally we were treated to a small in-service on the dangers of cramming your safe too full.........to bad it wasn't all money that we were cramming into it!!! :D

When you pack them too full, or put in something that is a little too big and pushes back against the door, that little motor can't pull the bolt back because it is dragging too hard. Usually, the door can be easily jiggled just a little bit. If it can't, try pushing in on the door a little to take the pressure off. Trying too many times when it is bound up will kill the battery very quickly.

On Vista Class (Zuiderdam etc) the safe is a pin code safe and does not require a magnetic strip card. Your cruise card is also your room key so you do not have to carry around a seperate room key.
On "S" Class (Veendam etc.) the safe is a magnetic strip type dafe which requires you to carry around an addional card. You also have a "punch card" room key as well as your cruise card so you have to carry around 3 cards if you plan on using the safe.
As far as "R" class, I have no idea as we have not sailed on one yet.
We are hoping that during the SOE drydock that the "S" class will upgrade the safes and room key situation as we prefer to carry just a single card with us. Has anyone sailed on the Ryndam since the SOE? Did they change the safes or door keys?

Well Zig.....we were on a roll for much of the trip (5 nights). I won the slot tourney, had a couple of straight flushes in 3 card poker and pulled a couple of generous slot machines... I found Mr. Zuiderdam as well........Travel partner won the black jack tourney, $1000.00 on a slot and had a few straight flushes on 3 card poker as well! So I'd say that we were lucky but not enough to jam the safe!! LOL We tried!! Nancy:)

Nancy, just curious, what was the prize for finding Mr. and/or Mrs. Zuiderdam?

Well there was a very nice little canvas bag (like the one everyone gets in their room for shore excursions). It was filled with little HAL souveneirs...A deck of playing cards, a "Z" mug, a beautiful HAL key chain, a "dam" compact disc holder, a HAL luggage tag and a few other things as well. It was very nice! Nancy:)
P.S. Please remember for future reference that Mr. & Ms. Z are not a couple. They are two separate individuals. That's where I made my mistake....I asked Mr. "Z's" wife if she was Ms. "Z" and she said no......but I didn't bother to ask him if he was Mr. Z and he was standing right there!! I could have found him days earlier......we all had a good laugh about it though!!

Golfgrl, did you just go around and ask everyone if they were Mr or Mrs Z or do you have a method? Do you normally only ask people who strike up a conversation with you or do you just pick a likely candidate and ask them?
Thanks

Sorry....no method! I just happen to have the gift of gab.... it's hereditary in my family. It also just so happens that when I'm on a cruise I'm so flippin happy that I'm smiling constantly, so apparently that makes me approachable and conversations start up. Good Luck!! Nancy:)

Thanks Nancy. That is a nice gift, although the cash in the casino is certainly better. :p Like you, I thought Mr. and Mrs. Zuiderdam were a couple. We were approached a couple of times, but I think most people thought they were looking for a couple also. Was it someone that you became friendly with throughout the week or just someone you ran into on a couple of occasions? Am I correct in assuming that his wife knew that he was Mr. Z? Or did he have to keep it from her? Do you know if Mr. Z got a prize also?

Kelly.....I don't know for sure, but I think she knew......we would just run into each other in the elevators...Our cruise was shortened from 7 to 5 nights because of hurricane Jeanne so I believe that there was a wee bit over half of the origional passengers who did not cancel. So it was easy to spot people over & over. Those of us who did not cancel our trip had plenty to talk about and really got to know each other well! Anyhow on the last day a bunch of us went to bingo to try and win the free cruise, immediately after they had the Mr. and Ms. Z contest. Ms. Z had been found but Mr. Z had not. They said that he was in the audience, I stood up, looked at the first man I saw, asked him if he was Mr. Z and lo and behold it was him!! We both had to get up on the stage and both recieved the gift bag! It was pretty cool. :D

We did a safe on the Zuiderdam but we had to get someone from the front desk to open it initially and clear the old combination. It only took a minute once they got there!

I think all the VISTA ships have them. I know I was on the Zuiderdam in late May and early June of 2003 and there was one in my room.

Ms. Zuiderdam is not 'supposed' to tell anyone....including her DH, DS, DD etc
Same for Mr. "dam" ship.........
They are instructed to answer "Yes" to the first person who finds them. They are then to answer 'No" to anyone who asks after they have been found in order for the game to continue.
(I was once asked to be "Ms Maasdam")

s7s.......Did you accept? I was wondering how they decide to "pick" a certain person to accept the title. It is a very cool way to get people talking on the ship! Nancy
