You can walk to the French Quarter, but it is a little of a distance a 10 - 20 minute walk, the Aquarium is a little over a half mile from the Drury Inn.

You can catch the trolley to either place.
Cross Canal to the French Quarter or take a right & head towards the River for the Aquarium. Harrahs & Riverwalk Mall are also nearby.

afternoon and early evening won't be a problem walking around alone - I do it all the time. I'm not familiar with that hotel - where is it?

OK, the Frenchman Hotel - it's not exactly in the French Quarter - but is about as close as you can get. It's on the border of the Marigny and the Quarter. The Marigny is also a neat area with lots of clubs and good music going on. Easy walk to the Quarter, although I'd stay on Decatur Street after dark and even then watch myself. Usually well traveled, so usually lots of people around.
It's about a mile or so from the port - which is on the river behind the convention center. You could get there on the riverside streetcar if you didn't have luggage.

Your hotel is very close to one end of the Riverside streetcar. It runs along the river - so you can get to (or from) the Quarter very easily. It's within walking distance, but if you're worn out from walking it's nice to know that there is the streetcar. It costs $1.25 each time you get on - and they don't give change. There is a multi-use card you can get if you'll be using it often. Their web site is http://www.norta.com/ . The streetcars run from early morning to 9 or 10pm. You may want to print out the route and schedule for the riverside (I think that's #2) and the Canal routes (I think that's 47 or 48)
Actually the Canal Streetcar also ends here, but you have to pay attention to which cars are Canal. So you could ride from your hotel to either the cemeteries or City Park (where the art museum is) on the streetcar.
The Riverside streetcar will go to close to the port - I'm not sure if there's a stop at the Convention Center or if you have to get off at the Hilton - either way it's close enough to walk - but isn't really designed for cruisers - so there isn't a "port" stop but I'm sure the streetcar driver can let you know the right place to get off.
