In view of the many postings about HAL's gourmet meatloaf, thought this news items would be apropos.
-----------------------
A cafeteria food fight on "meat loaf day" led to the suspension of the entire eight-grade class at a Geeter Middle School in Memphis. The students were suspended after refusing to clean up the mess. The cause of the disturbance was not known. No serious injuries were reported, but there was minor damage to the cafeteria.
-------------------------
It really happened. I'm not making it up.....Was in today's paper......
Happy meatloaf day.......

Yes. I am from Memphis and that has been all over the news. In fact in a "Parents Meeting" regarding the suspension, on the the parents became so disruptive, he was arrested.
I admit to not being a meatloaf fan. My mother's was so-so and my meatloaf is so bad, even the dogs won't eat it?

So much for Meatloaf being a "comfort" food. It is now a weapon...
Before you know it, there may be "meatloaf detectors" at the entrance to each school.
Need to keep the students safe from weapons of all kinds... :)

My husband loves meatloaf. He frequently orders it in restaurants and he makes a terrific turkey meatloaf which is always a favorite in our house. The secret to a good meatloaf is a very small amount of starch or filler, lots of good cut up vegetables like onions, garlic and celery and eggs or egg whites. He also puts a small amount of chicken or turkey stock in his. The variations can be endless (and delicious).

OH - just a thought - can you immagine a food fight on a cruise ship if meatloaf were the only entree for one night???
Will we all be put off the ship in the next port???

Lol, sorry about your meat loaf, but you know its bad when the dogs won't eat it!
My sister made meat loaf once and one time only! Needless to say it was horrible and the dogs wouldn't eat it. I tease her to this day.:D

Meatloaf is reson enough to mutiny! I can't even begin to imagine what turkey meatloaf is like. Such creations do not jingle my taste buds! Even if it is not "bad" tasting...it is not what folks would look forward to on a dinner menu when cruising. If we accept this level of cuisine, the next thing we will see on the menu is "fishloaf"....yuck to both!

JDee,
I know your not making it up. I heard it on the radio station here in Georgia, while driving to work this morning and posted it on the Meatloaf thread. I almost died laughing when I heard it. :D

Before I die I want to participate in a huge knock-down, drag-em out complete with spaghetti and cream pies food fight. Oh, and maybe meatloaf too. Really, I think it would be an absolute blast ... any others out there who would care to join me? Hmm, maybe when we're sailing Princess in February - wouldn't want to make a mess of a 'dam' ship!
Smooth Sailing! :) :) :)

There is meat-loaf and then there is meat-loaf. Why are kids getting into food fights?? They ought to be suspended. Parents who defend those actions show why there is a problem

I dare anyone to start a food fight if meatloaf was
the only thing on the menu.
But save it for when KK and me are on the same ship.......

Thanks, bkreader. And the link even has a winning recipe for meatloaf. So all you doubters, from this you can see that making meatloaf can be serious business!

Meatloaf does not belong on a cruise ship dinner menu! It is in a class of foods like "franks & beans" or "spam" (the stuff in a can, not the e-mail variety). I would not want to see those things on a menu either. I understand that some may actually like meatloaf but that does not make it APPROPRIATE as a cruise ship dinner menu selection.

I agree with you Little Feet. Now Pate. But then Pate is not an entree.
I use to sell a Mousse Truffee Pate in our Gourmet Food Store.
The so called meatloaf served on HAL sounds more like Dutch Scrapple.

Don't know about Dutch Scrapple, but to many Philadelphians(and probably others), the Philly Scrapple is a delicacy.

*LOL*
This is hysterical! This is the first I am hearing about the great Memphis Meatloaf debacle *LOL*
I remember an incident involving the dried out frisbees they called hamburgers is my high school cafeteria many years ago. And last year at my daughters high school a boy made a disgusting gesture at a table full of girls involving vanilla pudding. *LMAO* You should have been at that parents meeting *LOL* good to see these kids still know how to have fun the old fashioned way with a good old fashioned fod fight, instead of rotting thier minds out with video games *LOL*
Actually I love meatloaf if it is really made well, I make a pretty "primo" one myself. but i will agree that for a cruise meal, it is kind of tacky.

Looks like this thread has now been set up as 'the competition' of who has the best meatloaf recipe. :)
Those of you who's meatloaf is 'the best'......why not share your recipe. Maybe the Chefs of HAL can learn how to make a good one!?! :)

I did not notice meatloaf on the menu at the Osterdam's 11/7 cruise it could have been there...but no food fights...one of my most noticable meatloaves used rice as a filler...Dang thing came out looking like a porcupine roll....

S7S,
i would be glad to share :)
Can't remember the whole recipe off teh top of my head and I will have to dig for the recipe card.
But i use ground beef, pork and veal, a little cumin, coriander, worchestershire, and like I said I would have to check on the other ingredients.
HOWEVER what little bread crumbs you do use have to be freshly made and you have to use Pepperidge Farm bread.
It is really quite good
even my fiances 6 yr old son likes it and he only eats Mac and Cheese, PB&J, and french fries *LOL*

What about fried balonga sandwiches, pimento cheese sandwiches, macaroni & cheese? You will be very surprised to come to Nashville and see these things on a restaurant menu. Until I moved here I had no idea that mac & cheese was considered a vegetable! Here there is a category of restaurant called "meat & 3's" which basically means you order a meat and three vegetables, mac & cheese always being one of the choices under "vegetables".:p

we have adiner here where Mac and cheese is listed as a vegetable on the menu. Also potato salad is listed under vegtables NOT UNDER POTATO SELECTION
So you can have your entree with a baked potato and potato salad *LOL*
Kind of like having Stove Top Suffing and potatos *LOL*

We not only had meat loaf on the dinner menu on a recent Rotterdam cruise but true to the title "comfort foods", meat loaf sandwiches were offered the next day at lunchtime. "Waste not, want not". Lasagna and other pastas were common, as well as pot roast. I can make those foods at home. What's next - peanut butter and jelly sandwiches?

Hate to burst your bubble - but HAL gave up the peanut butter & jelly sandwiches a few years ago. I can remember when they were offered at least once on a cruise at lunch time.

Do a poll...
Even if you like something...doesn't mean you take a cruise to experience it... like the long lines for hot dogs at the grill..
I see the headlines now..."HAL's famous meatloaf recipe replaces Filet and lobster as the food of choice in the dining room." Liver came second..., Oatmeal 3rd.. People with actual tastebuds abandoned ship and continued their voyage with Celebrity...

You are right on target! I'm certain there is no meatloaf on Celebrity menus. We loved the food on Celebrity....and just may go back to that cruiseline if the food on HAL continues to slide into "institutional" type selections.

We just got back from the Zuiderdam Thanksgiving cruise. Laugh at the meatloaf all you want, but my wife ordered it the night they had it and it was absolutely superb. Who cares what the name is, the connotation or what have you if the quality of it is good? I personally liked it better than the Filet we had in the Pinnacle the first night and I love Filet. People talk about "I can make meatloaf at home". Well you can make crab legs, lobster, filet and Thanksgiving dinner also, but I see no one else complaining about those types of menu selections. Sorry to disagree, but I think you guys are making a big deal about nothing. If you don't want it don't order it. There are other more "gourmet" selections always available. If I recall, I had duck breast that night (which also was quite tasty).

We were on the Zuiderdam the week before you, my husband also had the meatloaf(he loves meatloaf)and really enjoyed it. Each evening in the Vista Dining Room they offered a "Homestyle Comfort Food", with things like pot roast, turkey, and even glazed honey ham(which I had on the second formal-lobster night as I don't like lobster), it too was great. I think that there is more than enough variety on the menu each evening that you can avoid these foods if you wish, but the rest of us appreciate it.

Don't use hamburger meat when making meatloaf. Use Stewing Beef ground.
It is much better. Mix the ground stewing beef with and egg and work it through. Makes it moist. Then throw in some cut up onions. Cut the slices small and don't use too many. Put in a bread pan and put in oven and bake until finished. You can also add in some catchup and work it through like the egg. You should have delcious meat loaf.

I've resisted sharing my secret recipe for meatloaf, which was very popular when I served it at a low-carb workshop. Because we don't use breadcrumbs, I substitute crushed pork rinds (either plain or barbecued), mix in an slightly beaten egg, and 1/3 cup of salsa (from a jar), preferably not chunky. Sometimes I top it with shredded jalapeno jack cheese, added for the last 10 minutes. One man at the workshop, when he saw the menu, announced that he didn't eat meatloaf. Then when everyone else was obviously enjoying it, he asked for a taste, then a slice, then a second slice. He went home with the recipe and a big hunk of the one I'd made as a back-up.

On meatloaf night, 10% of the diners were picked at random, served meatloaf, and forced at butter knife-point to consume it.
