In another thread I asked for HAL secrets. You told of, on S class ships, taking a staircase up one level from the front of the lower Promenade to a large deck at the bow. You pointed out the door that may have to be unlatched. When we got up there and I started opening those latches DW got nervous. And when we walked out there (and were the only ones there) she was sure we'd end up in the brig. But it was a great place to watch as we sailed into port. And I pointed out to DW we were in full view of the bridge. If we weren't supposed to be out here, someone would have informed us.
Would have never found that vantage point without that tip.

Sometimes at Sea that can be a dangerously windy place. I like to be out there when sailing in Glacier Bay. It is a great place to watch the Marjorie Glacier calve!!!!
The first time I sailed on the Volendam I could not find the door that leads up there but I emailed Rev. Neal and he told me where the door was. Now it is marked. I was out there a couple of times during my recent cruise on the VOLENDAM

On the Statendam, the second daily program gave directions on how to reach the bow of the ship so that people go out there - and that was days before we got to the Panama Canal.

If I remember correctly, at least 1 of those exterior doors is open during the day. Opening it at night or trying to, is asking for trouble from 'the old man'

We will be on the Volendam on the 26th as well and my husband and son would love to find that location for sure.

It is post #30 in this thread (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=50922&page=2&pp=25&highlight=secret). Even includes a little diagram.

You're VERY welcome, my friend. Always happy to be of help. On the Zaandam I took a series of photos to illustrate the process. I'll try to get them up and posted today. :)
Thanks for pointing to the thread where I had given those directions. :)

My own opinion: The door is latched for a reason. If we're supposed to be out there, it will be open.

When we were on the Statendam, the door was open when we were in port. There was a sign that said it could be dangerous to go out there when we were at sea. However, if the ship is pulling into port, or going through the Panama Canal very slowly, I would think it wouldn't be dangerous at all. For short people, the railing is very high and it is hard to see over it to get a decent view.

That includes the doors going to the forward observation decks.
I used the stairs one night leading to those doors, and got reamed for leaving that door open.

We found that the bow was the very best vantage point during our cruise in Antarctica on the Ryndam. A small bit of nauticaleze: When a hatch (doors are hatches!)is closed, it is "dogged down". The latches are called dogs

You never answered my questionSorry Vic,
Yes, it was during daylight hours. I believe it was the morning we were heading into St. Thomas (but could easily have been another morning).

That's good to hear.
If it was at night, the 1st officer would have ripped you a new one. LOL
I got reamed for opening a door by the bridge. Couldn't help it, it was dark!
