Okay John, I didn't want to pester you - but since Barocl is enquiring about his/her sailing in August, any idea who will be the Captain and the Cruise Director on the Amsterdam's Grand Australia/New Zealand cruise in September? I remember that you mentioned that Henk Mensink is slated to be Hotel Manager, which more than likely means that his wife will be GRM: good choice - they are a very nice couple.

Thanks,

Valerie:)

p.s. If you know who the Dining Room Manager is that would be nice to know also. I have some favorites but haven't seen any of them on the Grand Voyages.

Val, there will be both a capt and CD change about a month before you and KweenKaren leave on that dream cruise however their replacements aren't listed yet. I'll keep checking

Henk Mensink is still scheduled to be HM and the dining room mngr is scheduled to be Thomas Grindlay

Actually John, the current CD on the Eurodam is Linda Minikens (sp?). Apparently she used to work with NCL according to someone on our Berlin tour yesterday.

I am so glad to see that you have your sense of humor back, Karen. Isn't it you though who is going to be upgraded to a suite?:D

I hate to say this but, as a solo cruiser, I have only been upgraded once and that was earlier this year on the Statendam. I had booked an EE guarantee and was upgraded to an E (I know, big whoop!) Now here's the rub: the EE category cabins on the Statendam are all close to mid-ship on Dolphin Deck, whereas my "upgraded" category E cabin was on Main Deck - all the way aft (two more cabins and I would have been sleeping on deck.) However I was assigned the two best cabin stewards on the ship - Bo and Hari. They are great - so dedicated to making "their passengers" happy and comfortable. They really did make my cruise even more enjoyable.

Last year on the Grand Asia/Australia cruise I was the only one at a table of six singles and one couple who wasn't upgraded despite the fact that I have a Dutch last name, and yes I was all the way aft again, pretty much in the same location except on Dolphin Deck. I guess that HAL just doesn't like me, or maybe they have figured out that I still keep coming back no matter what!

Less than two months to go: see you soon.

Valerie:)

What does the I Gede Putu translate to - or is that part of his name? He left the ship when we did (mid February) and told me he would be going on the Oosterdam in May. I guess I can hope he'll re-join the Noordam!

I'll bet John Scott leaves the Noordam for vacation just before we board...just like last year! :(

Putu and Made are both, I believe, Balinese names. As it was explained to me years ago (and so long ago that I don't remember the order) these names reflect the position in the family by order of birth. For example, and I probably have the order wrong (sorry:o), Made would be the first born male child and Putu the second. I seem to remember that I was told there are four names and should a fifth male child be born then he would be Made with a different second name by which he would be commonly known; then Putu with a different second name (as in Indra) by which he would be commonly known, etc.

I hope this makes sense - reading it over I'm not so sure but I do remember that "my" Putu explained it to me and I found it fascinating. My "Indonesian son", Sinaga, is from Sumatra and his name translates to Dragon (at least that's what I was told by his best friend;)) so obviously that has nothing whatsoever to do with order of birth:D).

I have no idea what I Gede means but I am going to ask on my next cruise.

Okay John: if Indra Bangsawan is currently on the Oosterdam then where is my favorite of all time Kiki Basuko, or has he retired? He is a sweetheart and I fell in love with him back in 1991 aboard the old Noordam - what a gentleman, and how happy I have always been to meet up with him again on various ships.

Some folks do it by looking at the HAL's website 'on-nline' reservations/remaining cabins available for/o a particular cruise. The only ones who can give you an accurate answer to that question are HAL reservations agents in Seattle and/or the staff of the ship you're on
