How many of you remember when HAL used to have peanut butter & jelly sandwiches for lunch at least one day on a cruise?
That's one comfort food I would like to see HAL put back on the menu.

I don't remember ever seeing PB & J offered but it's easy enough to have it. Lido has tremendous choices of bread; peanut butter and various flavors of jelly are always available. Voila.....a PB & J sandwich.

 I should have been more clear. I wouldn't want you to be subjected to such a task. I failed in my response to indicate you should point out to the Chef behind the Lido buffet line what it is you want.....and HAVE HIM MAKE IT FOR YOU!!!! :D

On the Statendam, you could only get peanut butter at breakfast. A man asked for it at lunch time and the "pained" sandwich man told him that isn't available at lunch time - only breakfast.

You'll laugh but the truth of it is I always bring a jar of peanut butter in my carryon bag and some wasa bread (like crackers) or similar. I rarely eat peanut butter but I like to have some food with us in the event we get held somewhere during our travels when no food is available. Waiting hours in an airport, for example, when there are few, if any, places to get food. I also put some dried fruit into our bags.

Funny you should mention that. Although most people working in the Lido were very friendly, I heard numerous complaints about the attitude and service of the person at the deli station on the Maasdam. I didn't get any sandwiches myself, so I can't speak from personal experience.

I love having HAL's raisin bread at lunch at times, but when asked for jelly packets, told only available at breakfast. I suppose could have went higher up & insisted someone get some jelly, but that's not my style. Instead, have the raisin rolls at breakfast w/jelly & cream cheese......or a bagle, or english muffin, etc....Since I never eat peanut butter, never looked for it & don't know of its availabilty....
Happy cruising.....

It makes me feel bad to hear these sort of comments about Lido workers being unfriendly and unresponsive to requests. In all of our many cruises on HAL, I have never had anything like that happen. We've been lucky I guess but I cannot imagine that no one would go into the 'back' and get you some peanut butter or some jelly. Hope our good luck with great service continues.

Althought I LOVE peanut butter - i have yet to carry any with me while flying - but that could change in the future as we now have to change flights more than we ever used to do.

The sandwich man we had on the Statendam was the ONLY one we have encourted in the Lido who was unfriendly and could care less about his job.

Our emergency supply food in our carry-on luggage is DARK CHOCOLATE - antioxidents !!!!!

Oh, KK, I am so with you on that! Dark chocolate is a much better way to go:) . Actually, I always travel with York Peppermint Patties ... if you're going to indulge, this is one of the better "indulgencies".
But I honestly think you're all truly certifiable. As I read this thread about peanut butter and jelly on a cruise, I have to say I am completely stupefied. The absolute last thing I think about on a cruise is peanut better (usually one of my favorite foods). It being so available 365 days a year, it's the last thing I want to see on the sandwich line.
Sail, I absolutely adore wasa bread and peanut butter (I can taste it as I write this), but in my luggage????? I think not;) .
But that's just me!!!!!!!:p

Heather, dahhhhling....:)
You misunderstand :D
I do not bring the peanut butter for the ship. I bring it for the horrible, lousy, crummy, miserable, disgusting etc etc necessity we have of putting up with airplanes and airports. We all hear of the closings of airports and everyone shoved out into the parking lots while they look for some idiot who jumped the security line.....Or, there's always the flight delays where people get stuck in airports for days. You, my dear, are spoiled. You live an hour from the dock!! We feasibly could be stuck in transit for hours with no accessibility to food. It is amazing how the few morsels available disappear rapidly.
Think of us poor snowbunnies who must fly to get to our sun and fun aboard the ships of HAL. :)

It is sad but true Sail. It happened to us multiple times during the afternoon sandwich time. Those working did not want to work starting about 1/2 hr before closing. It's one thing to answer a question.. it's another to disappear or ignore someone. All they had to tell my daughter is "we have no more pizza" instead of ignoring her. On 2 other occasions we would ask for sandwiches and they would walk away to the back never to return. I thought it was just us.. but then compared notes with my dining room table mates and they had the same experience. It's a shame and not a true representation of what goes on during the breakfast/lunch/dinner times.
I would recommend not going other than regular meal times unless it's just for icecream. There's always the taco bar.

Maureen......
That is not tolerable and I would not have liked it very much if that had happened to us.
Luckily (so far) we have not experienced that and I hope our good luck continues. That simply is no way to treat a passenger....and certainly not a child looking for a piece of pizza.

I agree Maureen. The "deli" guy seemed like he wanted to be somewhere else. I will admit some of my fellow passengers sandwich orders would have made me feel the same way.
I would just ask for pastrami on rye, or turkey ham and cheese and let him do his thing. There were some ahead of me in the line that were just too much. They were specifying how many slices, put the cheese on top of the ham, no I want the tomato on top of the lettuce etc etc..... One person wanted everything that was there on her sandwich, "but please cut a slice of bread in half, I don't want two slices". How do you make a "Dagwood" on half a piece of limp white bread and keep it together?
So while he may have been grumpy, there probably were some good reasons for it. I know the customer is supposed to be right, but how many of these special orders can you take in a day.
I also would say I saw them continually close the shades on the buffet 30 minutes before the scheduled closing time. Don't know what was up with that.

Amazing how the same ship can deliver such a different product in the course of a few short months. Not that long ago that we were aboard being spoiled as much as always.
I guess there must be some change in crew???

I didn't notice the same thing as Maureen, but that was a matter of timing. We had early dining, so I wasn't looking for lunch too late. But Maureen had 8:00 seating, so her lunch was naturally later. However, several times I headed to the Lido for iced tea and as John pointed out they were closing up shop early.
I never had a sandwich on board, so I can't speak to that, but often times the person scooping out the ice cream didn't seem too happy.
On a positive note, there was one person (don't know his name). He was a tall heavy man who always was friendly at the Lido. And all the stewards who would take your tray or refill your glass were very nice.
One observation about carrying trays. They need to use common sense. I'm 44, 6'3", 190 pounds (at least before the cruise) and healthy. I had times that they would insist on carrying my tray. Then I'd look back and an elderly person, who obviously could use the help, would be struggling by him/herself as there were no other stewards available at that time.

However ... I did understand you. It's just that peanut butter is not, IMHO, the best snack in airports, etc. It sort of sticks in your mouth. I don't want to go into detail ... oh, well, why not;)? After eating peanut butter you have to maneuver your tongue all around your mouth to get all the peanut butter. But then, of course, you probably have some Pelligrino to wash it down with:rolleyes: . I'm cracking myself up here!
I am not so dumb that I didn't know that Sail7Seas is not chowing down on peanut butter and Wasa Crispbread in her suite! What a picture!!!
As to service in the Lido on my cruise, I always found it friendly and helpful ... always a wink and a smile. Maybe that's because I'm such a delightful person;) . KIDDING!!!!!

;) Motto to Live By: Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"
I positively love that quote. I know I've read it before but had forgotten it.

Somehow I suspected I was looking in all the wrong places if I thought you would pity this Bostonian. :D It is a nice part of the country hereabouts. In any case.....it's home. :) (and the more cruises that embark/disembark in Boston, the better it gets!)

OK, Speaking of Peanut Butter. The only morning we had breakfast in the Lido we are going thru the line and there on the counter was a Jumbo Can of Skippy Chunkey Peanut Butter. So I asked "What do you use the Peanut Butter for?" The lady behind Tom says "Oh it is great on pancakes or French Toast" I then stated I had never done that. So Since I was not exactly following the diet they gave me a small cup of peanut butter and I got a piece of French Toast. It was great. I could of easily made a P B and J sandwich:D

Peanut butter on pancakes is very good. It's also good to add to pancake mix before you cook them. My kids LOVED peanut butter pancakes when they were little. Sometimes they'd add Jelly or Honey on top instead of syrup.

Eeeuwww! Yuk:eek: . Peanut butter on pancakes? Too sweet. Maybe they offer it for the kids? It's really good on rye toast. And there is nothing more delicious in this world than peanut butter with bacon on rye toast. Hmmmm...
And of course peanut butter and chocolate is yummy. I shouldn't even get started about peanut butter. The only time I got sick of peanut butter was during and after our hurricanes. Somehow it lost its lustre:D

I do have a sweet tooth - love butter, sugar, and cinnamon on wheat waffles.
As much as I like peanut butter, I don' think that I am going to try it on pancakes.

and let's not lose sight of elvis' favorite - grilled peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Now throw some bacon in with that and you've got something!!
My buddy won the elvis impersonator contest in the crow's nest one nite 2 weeks ago on Volendam. Was a hoot! Didn't know he had it in him. Folks called him Elvis the rest of the cruise.
and 49er - those folks with all those demands in the sandwich line remind me a lot of the guys I feed in prison. All WANT their tray a certain way. We tell them "state tray .. all the way" If they didn't like gravy before doin' time, they're gonna LEARN to like it (and the lumps).... as far as WANT, I always tell them that I WANT Ann Margaret waiting in a camisole and tap pants when I get home tonite.. but that ain't likely to happen either.. *L*
then again.. half of them never heard of Ann Margaret.. oh well.. their loss

YES!!! I forgot! I LOVE it on english muffins, Thomas' that is. And I can't even have Reese's pb cups in the house because they will be consumed by moi. There was a time .... long ago .... when I kept them in the fruit drawer of my fridge at our place in the Poconos. But no more:( .
Michmike, YES!!! I used to like pb and banana sandwiches on white bread. Hmmmm. Again, not any more:( .
