Greetings All...

Leaving on December 4 in a Deluxe Verandah Suite. I'm wondering if the DVD player in the room can also be used to play CDs or is it strictly for DVDs? I'm trying to avoid packing my mini CD player and speakers.

Thanks for your help.

Great question Fit Heart! :)
(Great name also! I am a member of the zipper club !)

I also had mine out to pack as our suite last year just had a VCR. Do all suites have a DVD now and will thye play CD's??? Thanks in advance for the answer!

You didn't say which ship.

Not all have the DVD players.

As far as I know, only the Vista class ships have the DVD players.

On the Oosterdam (SS cabin) you can play music on the dvd player through the tv's speakers but it sounds terrible. If you have portable speakers and care at all what your music sounds like I'd suggest bringing them.

That was silly of me Krazy! We will be on the Zuiderdam.

We had a suite on the Z in November & played CDs on the DVD thing.....I thought it had great speakers....I did not think the sound came through the TV.

The sound might be better in S suites than SS cabins. I know the tvs are better - they have flat panel tvs in S suites but not in SS. In our SS room the dvd only had audio output through the tv and the sound was bad - sounded like listening to blown out speakers.

OKay they have flat panels in the S suites now???? I heard it was going to be some time before they installed them.
I'm going to be on the Zuiderdam in Feb 05'.
Does anyone know if this is true?
Also does the music come thru the tv speakers or not LOL

Hey Vic,

It's just a walkman CD with small portable speakers that plug into the headphones outlet. Very small, but still have a good sound. I travel with them everywhere, so I can choose the music I listen to.

IPOD is the best way to bring your music these days. Still amazes me that this thing that is the size of a pack of cigarettes stores 40,000 songs!

We did have a DVD player in our cabin on the Ryndam last week, I would guess it would also play CDs, it was one of those new very thin sytle DVD players.

On the Zui in S grade we had separate DVD and CD players. CDs and DVDs available from the Neptune Lounge. No LCD screens yet though.

Thanks, that's great to know, Chris. Thanks to all of you for your posts. As always, this board is the way to get your questions answered quickly.

I usually bring a small radio/cd player that can be placed on the desk in the cabin. The thing is, how can I bring it on a plane if I have to fly?

You know how they're searching carry-ons now. And I'm not sure if it's a good idea to put it in my checked bag. It might get damaged, or the bag might be forced open.

Just off Zuiderdam, Had a suite. Yes, there are CD and dvd players. CD player had 2 great speakers. Now what we did is we bought some speaker wire so we could put the speakers out on the balcony. This way we could hear the music without turning the volume way up and leaving the door open. We happened to see our neighbors in the hallway, and they said they couldn't hear our tunes. One guy mentioned that you could get CD's from the neptune, but they really needed to be updated. We brought our own.

On Prinsendam, there were 2 TV's with a DVD player each and a separate CD player with good quality speakers and subwoofers (Bose). We also got a box with about 10 music CDs in it, more were available in the Neptune lounge.

Unfortunately, a lot of the DVDs had scratches and the player skipped all the time.

In the past we've brought along our Sony Walkman and a small pair of external speakers. We carry those with us rather than putting them in the checked luggage....just too portable for somebody to "borrow". On the Oosterdam we didn't take any music but need buy some CD's in a couple of ports. We were in an SS cabin and you could play the CD's through the DVD player and television speakers. As mentioned above the sound was not great but we survived. Might be better now that they're going to the flat screens.

I'll just pack my radio in the carry-on.

If I'm requested to remove it, I'll buy a new one in London.

Has anyone tried to hook an IPOD up to the CD system in an S Class Cabin? I love my IPOD music life and have not been on the Zuiderdam before and do ot know what the CD system looks like and what input options it may have/

Got my wife an IPod for Christmas and we plan to take it on our Galaxy cruise (I know....going over to the dark side but the opportunity was too good to pass up). I got her the kit that allows you to hook it up to a stereo system and we're hoping we'll be able to do that in our cabin. I think you should be able to do that with the DVD/CD player but you will have to have the right connectors.

On Prinsendam, the CD player was a Bose. You might want to check their website, maybe it says if an IPod can be connected.

But then, maybe other ships have different CD players...

Randy, did you get a wireless FM transmitter kit to allow your wife to play through the stereo or is it a direct wire connection?

Randyk47

Actually have both. Use the FM connection to play her IPod through the car stereo and the stereo connection kit to hook up directly to a system if the connectors are available. We'll have both with us on our next cruise as we're driving to the port and will play tunes on the Jeep's system on the way down. The other thing we added since Christmas are two sets of the noise canceling headphones. (Not the Bose....a bit too pricey.....got them at Sharper Image and they work great.) I have another MP3 player made by Archos that I store my digital photos on and have some room for music also. Just used the new headphones and the player on a plane trip.....incredible!

Randy,

You are a gadget man after my own heart.....are the sharper image headphones smaller than the Bose? I need to do some shopping!

Where did you get the hardwire connection for the Pod....is it apple?

Randyk47

Rag Top Man - I didn't actually handle any of the Bose headphones but my impression is that the Sharper Image version is a bit smaller and fold up into a handy pouch....and about 1/5 the cost. I mean there's only so much I'm willing to pay. The other thing is that the little ears pods things that come with most portable CD players, MP3 players, etc., hurt my ears and I'm forever losing the little foam ear condoms on them. :o The cables and the FM transmitter are all from Monster Cable. I use Monster Cable speaker wire and connectors on my surround sound systems at home and have been very happy with the quality. And yes....I love gadgets....my DW calls them my toys. :)

Rag Top Man - Just an update. It's a rainy morning in San Antonio and we knew it was going to take extra time to get into work today. Broke out the Monster Cable FM transmitter for my wife's iPod and used it for the first time on the way to work. Absolutely fantastic!!! I've tried these kind of devices before with mixed results....nothing mixed about this one.....sound quality was first rate and we could detect no difference between the iPod and a CD. Highly recommend!!! :)

Thanks for the update...I have tried two different devices so far and am pleased with both...I got the Monster for my daughters mini and I splurged on a device from Dlo (I think...its early) which is actually a transmitter with a cradle for the pod on an extension arm that plugs into the lighter. I gets the pod up to easy eye and touch level in my car and keeps it in one place as you drive....about $80 for the whole package with all of the accessories at Best Buy. I love technology. I am still looking for the right cable set for the hookup to the stereo on the cruise. I guess it will be a stereo two prong jack to plug into the CD with a single mini to plug into the pod. My wireless set up only has DC adaptors for the car....hmmm...does the CD system on board even have an FM tuner that I could transmit to?

So many questions and, thankfully, so little time till the cruise!!

RTM - The cradle gadget for the car for the iPod sounds great....I'll have to look for it. The iPod to stereo package I have is actually specifically designed for that use. It includes a charger, a base station, and a connector from to base to the back of the stereo (right and left audio RCA plugs). I think I actually got that one from Apple rather than Monster Cable.
