Twice_a_year, if you check out my Alaska Slide Shows below you will see some of the awesome photos I got while cruising Alaska 17-23 May 2008 and 10-16 May 2009.

The best excursions for me (hubby had others) were in:

Juneau, 2008:Mt. Roberts, Orca watching at twilight from a catamaran. It is now called Evening Whale Watching Quest

Juneau, 2009: Mt. Roberts, Whale Watching and Wildlife Quest (same as 2008, but during the day and slightly larger catamaran (holds about 30 passengers.)

Ketchikan, 2009: Bering Sea Crab Fishing Tour

Sitka, 2009: Semi Sub tour (and I am a severe claustrophobic, and this did not have me scared or panicky at all!)

Those were my favorites.

Best excursion was out of Juneau...3 glacier helicopter ride, landing on a glacier and going dog sledding. Outstanding experience.

My husband and I took the first cruise of the year to Alaska out of Vancouver on the Ryndam. This was our 3rd Alaskan cruise. So I had no real plans for tours since we had been to Skagway, Ketchiken and Juneau before.

Since the weather was sunny, in Juneau we just took the $7 shuttle to the Mendenhall Glacier since the weather was bad the last two times we had been in Juneau. I wanted to take the whale watching cruise, but I thought it would be too cold out on the water.

In Skagway, we just took the Days of 98 tour which was corny but fun. Gave us a chance to see the cemetary which is a long walk from town. But the weather was so fabulous when we were in Skagway that I wish I had taken the train ride. Go to the HAL BLog and check out the pictures posted in May. The crew of one of the ships took the train and the picture of the snow covered mountains and hillsides from the train was awesome.

In Ketchiken, we had planned to just walk around. But at the last minute I decided to take the HAL Misty Fjord cruise. It was the one of best shore execursions we have taken. We saw lots of eagles, including baby eagles. We saw deer (how the captain ever spotted them, I have no idea). There were humpback whales, seals and dolphins. And lots of birds and a bear. And the scenery was fabulous. We stopped in the National Park visitors center in town and we told them about our trip. They said you must have gone out with the Allen Family. The Park Service said their tours are the best.
