Amazing photos Winchester!!! I've read so many posts that are negative to the new retreat etc. BUT your photos of the ship and especially the retreat make me want to enjoy it all!! Sure, the aft pool may be a lot smaller than previously ( I have not been on it, just going from other posters to CC), but when you have the big LIDO pool midship, who cares. Just my opinion!! And BOY I wanna go on this ship or one just like it!!!

Thank you for the great shots. We will be aboard her in a few weeks and this showed us a side the brochures do not. I can feel the excitement. Colakid.

Are you confusing posts about the E-dam Retreat & cabanas with the Lido cabanas? Or with the Veendam Retreat, which is a totally different concept?
Both of those have had many negative reviews, but reviews of the E-dam Retreat have been universally positive.

No RuthC, I was just making an over all statement about The Retreat in general. So many of us have never seen any of the Retreats, and yet we read the posts regarding them and think (at least I do) that they are/may be the same.
To actually see what one of The Retreats looks like is amazing and eye opening. If they look 1/2 as nice os the Eurodam's Retreat, I want to be on a ship with one.
Heck, I even think the aft Lido pool and the Cabanas do look a lot nicer tha I thought they would. I know that some of the other ships will look different than the Eurodam, but once again, if they look half as nice, they will look good to me.
I am used to the Oosterdam and Westerdam. I can only imagine just how much nicer they would be with the additions on the Eurodam. AND I LOVE both my DAM ships as they are now. BUT, will look forward to changes IF they look like Eurodam does.

I'm confused by your comment that there have been negative posts about the E-dam Retreat. There haven't been. The E-dam Retreat area has been met with many positive reports.
I don't understand why you would say there have been negative reports about it when that simply is not the case.

Ruth, I DID NOT say the Eurodam in particular!! I made a generalized statement that I felt covered ALL of the DAM ships that have or will have the modernizations.
Please forgive me for not stating EXCLUDING the Eurodam. I HAVE NOT been on any DAM ships other than the Oosterdam and Westerdam so I cannot say how any of them will look. All I can do is to go by what posters are saying about what they have seen or are envisioning these modernizations.
I will do my best to be MORE explicit when I speak of the Eurodam, even though I know nothing about her.

The "Retreat Cabana" area on the Eurodam is something entirely different from the "Retreat Pool" area that has been added to one ship already, and is/was planned for others.
The complaints on these boards are mostly in regard to the Retreat (wading) Pool concept for the older ships, not the Retreat Cabanas on the Eurodam.
The older ship's "Retreat Pool" areas will NOT look anything like the Eurodam. No cabanas. No pool. Just an area of very shallow water with lounge chairs plunked down in the middle of it. They may both be called "Retreat" areas... but they are two different things. Hope this helps.

Thanks Two@sea it helps a little in the envisioning, but would be a lot easier if someone could post photos so we can see the differences.

Your beautiful pics and video of the Eurodam. Thoroughly enjoyed viewing them. Have never sailed the Eurodam and feel like I just got the grand tour. How did you snag this wonderful tour?

Go to the HAL website, click on Onboard Our Ships, select the Veendam, click on Public Rooms (left side of screen), and then scroll down to "Retreat" and click on that. Do the same for the Eurodam... see the huge difference?
And, most importantly, thank you Winchester for posting the GREAT pics!

Thank you Two@sea, NOW I see the difference!!! Just one wustion for "The Retreat" on Veendam??? Where in the world IS the pool?? I could not see it (unless it is that tiny brownish round thing (see attached photo)130438
I even did the Virtual tour of it (nothing moved though) and even with it being a larger view, only thing that showed me there was a pool supposed to be there are the loungers. Am I missing something?? Or is the new pool that tiny?
And yes, if that is what I am seeing, then I can understand some people being upset with my statements. BUT you took the time to point out where to do comparisons. As the saying goes, "A picture is worth 1000 words." And in this case the pictures are very vocal!
So, once again Thank You

The 'pool' such as it is - is the area where the loungers are. they are actually sitting in the water.

OMG! Now I completely understand why people are upset over the change(s) Nothing at all like the Eurodam's beautiful new pool and Retreat.
My thanks to those of you who use photos and links to show those of us who are unfamiliar with extremely difficult to picture in one's mind changes and or descriptions of things.

The "pool" is more of a watering trough. That's why it's being called a "poolette".
Now do you understand why I was asking if you were confusing the E-dam Retreat with the Veendam Retreat? And said that it's a totally different concept?

YES, Now this old dumb blond sees the light RuthC!!! But it took seeing them both to understand.
I had no visual idea of the differences. To me, when I saw the ?new? smaller aft pool than what is on the Oosterdam and Westerdam, and the Beautiful Retreat above the aft pool on the Eurodam, I thought that was what was being called a poolette (the smaller pool).
As I said in another post seeing the pictures made a huge difference and made me see why the changes to the Veendam are considered so bad esthetically and visually. I sure hope they scrap any plans to change the other ships (?now planned?) to receive the same aft changes as Veendam's. I could happily live with changes like the ones I saw of the Eurodam!!!
Please understand, I was not trying to be argumentative! I just had to see pics of the differences. (I think that is one reason I try to give urls and such when I post anything (or at least I try.)

OK. Now I know that. I don't do photos, but I can do pretty good word descriptions. I'll leave it to others to find the photos to illustrate what I spell out.

Hello, Winchester..
Thanks for all the great shots of the Eurodam. We willbe sailing on her 10/17/09.
I was interested in knowing the camera/lens you used. Excellent photos.
I have a Canon Digital Rebel with some pretty good lenses.
Just curious.
Thanks again,

Hello all. Thanks for your kind words. Makes the time to put these up all worthwile.
Greetings clayb
I use Canon and Olympus digital cameras. Canon 5D was used for this one. It's one of my higher MP camera. Olympus cameras are of the smaller toy variety for pocket or easy carry ashore. 1 is 4MP and the other more like 10MP.
I prefer cameras from camera companies.
For my shots, with the Canons I prefer to shoot RAW shots as there is so much you can do to play with the color etc... once I get them open in Photoshop. One problem on sunny days with HAL and Cunard ships, or new ones, is the white can GLOW. With digital, for edting, if there isn't a dot in the area, you can't add to it. Total white is NO dot. So I try to shoot in RAW a bit darker, so there is dot everywhere to work with. You can do so with JPG shots a bit, but not as much.
For all shooters, with digital photography, always take more Cards AND Batteries than you will need. I see too many folks walking decks of ships asking for these from others. It gets sad.
If you see a good... in my case... ship shot, you can afford to take several and some at other settings than "auto" so you will have something when you get back home. And unless you take tons of people pictures, you can afford to take severla of the special ones. Someone always closes their eyies, and with another you could get lucky or have one someone could swop out 1 head.
With the cheaper cameras, learn how you take lighter or darker shots, so you have variety to edit from. These vacations are a one time event to get shots you will have on your wall for life.
Lecture ended.

I believe they are referring to pixels. if there are pixels you can change tone, color, light, bright - if no pixels -- nothing you can do

Sorry, about that. In printing, we talk about dots a lot. The reply below is a correct interpretation.

Thank you for the beautiful pictures! I am so excited to be sailing this ship in November! As I am located only about an hours drive from NYC, I might have to go down to "get acquainted"!;) Now if HAL would only send me an invitation to lunch!:D

Enjoyed your pictures of the Eurodam. Looks a little different from the other HAL ships that we have sailed. We're booked on the Eurodam for the October 17 cruise to the Eastern Caribbean! Thanks for the preview shots.
