We will be cruising in January on Westerdam. For those of you who are recent cruisers, I was wondering what really good things we should look for at breakfast and lunch (bread pudding is already on my list!) Also, what to avoid. Is there anything that stands out in your memory? :) - Jane

For breakfast, I go for thinly sliced smoked salmon with capers, cream cheese, onion and tomato on a lightly toasted bagel. Add to that their french toast and really crisp bacon, stewed prunes and freshly squozen OJ... yum!

Breakfast: made-to-order omlettes; fried egg whites; sausage; chocolate croissants; other assorted pastries.
Lunch: prime rib at embarkation lunch; roasted chicken; made-to-order sandwiches; sugar-free desserts; ice cream.
Oh, yeck. I'm getting hungry.

My favorite for breakfast is the Swiss Muesli and they also have great French Toast. Both are big splurges for me while cruising since at home I would never have anythign with that many carbs or calories or fat, but while curising it is "what ever tastes the best":p Then they also have great pitted apricots and the smoked salmon is wonderful like Candy said.
Then I agree with RuthC the Rotersie Chicken and the Prime Rib they serve for Embarkation Lunch are great. The chicken I believe is every day for lunch. Then of course the different flavors of ice cream. It changes daily.

Prime Rib at the Embarkation Lido Lunch used to be one of our favorites. On our last cruise meatloaf was substituted for the prime rib. Not a nice surprise to start off the cruise. :(

Yeeeeeeeeees. Shhhh- don't tell. It makes sense as it is now offered on most of the ships on the last night, so they can hold the prime rib the next day and bring out the leftover meatloaf!

On both our last cruises they had the Prime Rib, May 15th 2004 and November 13th, 2004. I saw NO meatloaf in the Lido. Only one night in the main dining room it was listed as one of the Entrees that was "Comfort Food"

Do not pass up schnitzel when they have it. It is fantastic. Also, the sugar dusted challah bread is some of the best I have ever had. I must have had three or four slices every day they had it. My mother raves aboutr watermelon sorbet at the ice cream station, but I found that a bit too sweet. I stuck with sugar cookies from the ice cream station. They are excellent.

At home I eat fish at least twice a week. Most wise guys who are 40+ cut down on red meat. Unhappily, on all the cruise ships that I have been on, it always seems to be overcooked and/or dry.
At lunch when going down the Lido line, if the grill man has fish on the broiler I always ask if I may have one fresh off the griddle. It is always better than those fillets that have been sitting in the steam table. That and some salad makes me believe that I can be a little wild at dinner.

Most 'wise' ladies who are forty + also cut down on red meat :) for all the same reasons.
I hope you don't mind if I 'borrow' your suggestion to request the fish which is coming fresh off the grill. I have always avoided having the fish at lunch and opt for it in the dining room in the evening. You have 'smartened me up' and I shall be looking forward to a nice, hot piece of fish that hasn't gotten soggy from steaming. Thank you.

On Westerdam the stir fry was delicious! Also I remember in the past these tiny little pancakes at lunch one day, dutch I think, but not sure. I haven't seen them lately, but they may be served on a port day and I just miss them.
I always look forward to the fresh orange juice.

The raisin buns at breakfast are wonderful, reminds me of when I was young in England. Also they used to have snow crab claws and jumbo peeled shrimp on the lunch buffet but I haven`t seen them lately. I also enjoy the Avocado stuffed with crab salad, although now you only get a quarter of an avocado instead of a half..So I have to take two!!.....jean
