View Full Version : Self-Print Luggage Tags - INK RUNS WHEN WET!
Hutch&Pat
September 7th, 2009, 08:47 AM
Just printed our luggage tags on our ink jet printer and got concerned about them getting wet. Tested them and confirmed that the ink did run. We are considering covering both sides of each of them with clear scotch tape.
Any other suggestions? .... or will we sill receive some printed ones in the mail?
Thanks,
Pat

Take clear packing tape and cover them with that.
You won't be sent any other tags but can get them at the pier if you want to wait until then.

I think you're the first person to mention that the ink runs when it gets wet. It appears everyone who has printed off their own luggage tags has laminated them with clear packing tape before putting them on. It seems like the most sensible solution. Failing that, wait until you get to the dock and you can get some from the luggage handlers. It only takes a minute to put your name and cabin number on them; you don't have to put your address, flight number, etc., like the old ones.

Find a friend who has a laser printer, or possibly the public library....laser ink is fused and will not run.
You already know about inkjet ink. ;)

Good information! Of course now I've got to run downstairs and wet one of my tags to see if the ink runs or not.

Thanks for this Thread. I know, of course, that Inkjet ink runs ... but would never thought of it till my luggage tags had already been rained on. Packing tape, here I come. :)

The clear mailing tape (the wide one) is what I usually use. Let me ask you about your ink though, Are you using a 3rd market ink or having it refilled? Many times those thypes of ink are lower grade and are not much of a Permanent type ink. In addition to the luggage tage you print out, do what we do....add a regular luggage tag to your bags and indicate the cabin number on it, highlighted with a yellow marker. In the event the cruise line tag get lost, you have a back-up attached to the bag. ALSO, make sure you put some form of paper IN your luggage indicating you cruise line, Ship, sailing date and cabin number. These steps will help to ensure your luggage will make it to your cabin on sailing date.
-Bon Voyage!!

You will not get any luggage tags in the mail in the future.
You can get tags at the dock from the stevedores who take your luggage to load it on the ship.
We saw them with handfuls of them..... New style. Takes mere seconds to write your name, cabin number and attach.
You do not have to print out your own tags if you do not wish.

I loved being able to print out my own luggage tags. I have them in my hot little hands so much sooner ... and every time I look at them I get another big grin. I may be in the minority here, but think this was a good move by HAL.

Whether the ink runs or not doesn't seem to be as great a problem as having them torn. The clear packaging tape solves both issues. (If you want to print your own at home.)

Good point Jim. I guess I'll have to hunt around and find my little pocket stapler as we normally don't put our tags on until we're on the way to the ship for boarding. We always fly in a day or two ahead so we don't put our tags on until we in the port city.

We got the heavier paper at Office Max, $.15 each, copied several tags and am going back to OM to get them laminated. You can get one tag on a piece of paper. We have some now for our future cruises.:)

You could buy some self-laminating sheets and laminate them. It's pretty easy. I just laminated some membership passes to our Whaling Museum to extend the life of them (I let guests use them). You can buy the sheets at any office product store.

Scotch makes some self laminating baggage tags that work very well, but plain clear plastic tapes works as well.
One of my clever work mates took her baggage tags to a scrap booking store and had the laminated for very little money.

Another thing that works is elastic cord (from sewing supplies) I think 5 yards cost about 97 cents. Punch a hole and make a loop from the cord.

I believe the tags are of a porous material, which causes the ink to bleed a little. I think if you have a lazer printer, there wouldn't be a problem. I figure that the tags will be ok, unless the bags are left out in the rain. Which i think rarely happens

A couple of weeks ago I printed out our luggage tags.
Covered them in plastic.
At the area where they have "staple here" (once you put it around the luggage handle) -- I punched a hole.
When we are ready to go to the pier from the hotel I will use cable ties to attach them to the luggage.

Thanks everyone. I would not have thought of using a Sharpie or punching a hole or having them printed at Office Max on better quality paper etc. We only have an ink-jet printer which could be part of the problem. I'm sure that HAL will add some suggestions to the instructions in the near future ....... this is all so new. And I like the convenience of being able to do everything on-line ...... I even downloaded the ship's tours so I can review them when I'm no on-line.

I did a search on the Holland America Line website, and I can't find luggage tags anywhere? We sail on the Volendam in a little over two weeks. Can I just make a generic luggage tag with my cabin number on it?

At the bottom of your on-line check-in there should be a box that allows you to print your tags. The only reason I can think that it might not be there is if you're doing a guarantee category and haven't been assigned a cabin and I may be wrong in that assumption.

You can use any kind of a simple tag that shows your last name and cabin number, or you can get them at the pier and the porter will write in that info. If you fly to the embarkation city, the HAL reps in the baggage claim area should have them also.

Interestingly we're not sailing for over a year and our luggage tags are available at the bottom of the on-line check-in page once we enter our booking number. I was actually kind of surprised considering we're so far out and I admittedly printed one and have it sitting on my desk as a "friendly reminder" of what we're going to do next year. :) We did book a specific cabin.

I did the steps above, but did not find anything about printing luggage tags. Then I went through my document packet, and there are the luggage tags, as usual, with no name nor cabin number printed on them. I guess I just can use an indelible ink pen to fill out name and cabin number. They say, "Mariner" on the top, could that be the reason?

Hmmm..... No idea why you could not print them out, except that maybe since you have them in your packet now...
Remember is you are doing e-docs they will be in there also.
I printed ours out when I was explaining the steps and mine has Mariner on them, but no cabin # yet. But I have plenty of time to worry about that. You do not!!
Make sure you use a waterproof marker.

I think you received the luggage tags since you are sailing out of Vancouver. I read that they would be sending them in that case. If you are coming into Vancouver on the same day as sailing, you will have to have your tags on at the airport to get through the US Direct customs shortcut.

I don't think it's Mariner status as many, if not most, of us here are Mariners and are getting our tags off the HAL website. Must have been something about when you booked or the port. Who knows.....you've got tags so happy cruising! :)

Must have been something about when you booked or the port. Who knows.....you've got tags so happy cruising! :)It's the sailing date. The "no paper docs" edict doesn't go into effect until 9/25, so people sailing before then should have been sent bag tags.
I printed ours out when I was explaining the steps and mine has Mariner on them, ...Ours don't!

We sail 9/19 and were able to print our luggage tags. So much for the 9/25 theory. I feel sure Kayelache can't print her tags because her docs and tags were sent to her. I think that for $10 we could have had the same, but we opted not to.
I found the Scotch 4 x 6 self-laminating dealies at both Target and Walmart for about $3.50 for a pack of 5. I got two—that should see us through 5 cruises!
I also have a sturdy clear 3x5 luggage tag, so I reduced the luggage tag print size to 70% and now I have a cute little 3x5 HAL tag which won't get torn off my suitcase!
I have a laserprinter, only B/W. I understand the ships are color-coded. I'm wondering if that will cause a problem for me. I suppose I could use a colored marker over the ship's name.... For now, Zuiderdam is black, so I'm OK.

Yes, inkjet will run in the rain. Also, using a highlighter on inkjet will smear the print. Just the nature of the inkjet animal.
Probably easiest/cheapest method to protect the printed tags is to use wide-sized clear packaging tape on the tags ... as mentioned earlier.

What are the odds that (a) it will be raining hard enough during the short time that your bags are sitting on a pallet on the dock waiting to be loaded to obliterate the tags, and (b) that the stewards won't be able to locate you from the other tags on your bags?
I'll take my chances! :D:D

I am curious about a comment that somebody was seeing the Mariner banner on their tags printed off the HAL website. HAL clearly knows we're Mariners, in fact our information is in the block above the tag link but "Mariner" doesn't print out on the tag. A bug in the system? Only works with certain ships? Doesn't print out "Mariner" for anybody and I misunderstood? Again, not a problem just curious.

I also do not have Mariner on my luggage tags ... maybe it's only printing on luggage tags for those with 1000+ days on HAL :)
In all honesty, there are so many Mariners that whether or not it is printed on luggage tags won't make a difference in how anyone's bags are handled or in how quickly they are delivered to one's cabin. Or, for that matter, how differently each of us may be treated once onboard.
Isn't like bags for non-Mariners are left at the pier :) ... or that bags for Mariners go in the drink:)

Like I said I was just curious. I'd also agree that it makes no difference what your tag says other than your cabin number and name so that your luggage gets to you. If I get any "thrill" out of being a Mariner it's hearing "Welcome back!" from the agent at the terminal. Tells me I'm about to board a HAL ship for another cruise! :D

Actually chances are pretty good, If you are boarding in Fla, during our Rainy season...Normally from May thru end of Oct. it rains almost every day, usually in the afternoon.. Many times we get torrential rains within a one hour period..Hurricane season lasts thru Nov..:(:(:(
Saying a prayer that a major Hurricane will not hit us this year..It looks like we will be lucky again only because we're having our lanai re-screened & new anchors put in this week..Friends always say when we get new shutters, or new roof or a lanai re-screening, (to hurricane proof our homes) it's a sign we won't be hit during the present year...Hope they are right..
We always line our bags top, bottom & sides with plastic first, so that when we get the torrential rains our clothing stays dry...
After the end of Oct thru the following May it does not rain very often..Although on two of our cruises, HAL actually suspended luggage & supply loading when it was raining too hard..,..
Cheers...:)Betty

OK, now are we going to belabor the point of "most"
Those 13 sailings represent about 20,000 -25,000 passengers...There are still more sailings which I did not list (ex. Prinsendam & several of the other ships,) as I saw no point in it..And I still don't understand your point..
You wonder why we're going thru all this nonsense to keep the ink from running on our tags..And then you went on to say what are the chances it will rain in Fla..
I answered that if you travel between May & the end of Oct there is a chance it Will rain every day..Then another poster said to me that she never travels during those months & she does not believe that most HAL passengers do..
Well whoopee for her..So because she doesn't travel in the summer, we should discount the 20,000 to 25,000 passengers that do travel in those months.. I don't understand her point either..Apparently the 3 or 4% who do travel during those months don't count & should not be concerned with ink running on the tags...
Give me a break..I certainly don't give a hoot what you or the others want to do about your tags, but why are you concerned with what we are doing..:(?

Betty - Thanks for the tip on the plastic spray. My wife has some of that she uses in her crafts work so I'll give it a try. I also have some heavier card stock that I use to make up our address tags, CruiseCritic ones by the way :), and I'll see how that works. Actually my concern was less about the tags getting wet and more about them getting ripped or torn off the bags during handling at the port so the heavier card stock might help. As it was I was thinking I'd put two tags on the bags that have top and side handles. We're in the "tags on bag on port day" group as we typically fly in a day or two ahead so the only chance of them getting torn off is at the port.

OK, now are we going to belabor the point of "most"
I knew you'd find a way to quibble with the math.
The "point" is that the vast majority of the people sailing HAL this year (or any other) anywhere in the world will not embark in heavy precipitation. Even if they do, and the room number is written on both sides of the tag, odds are that one side will remain readable.
If you're worried about that, put two or three tags on, showing 4 or 6 room numbers. If it looks like severe weather when you get to the port, ask the porter for one of the plastic ones, written in permanent Sharpie ink. (For that matter, why don't you add your room number in waterproof ink to the ones you printed?)
If all of those tags get obliterated or torn off, they can still get your bag to you from the non-ship ID tags you have attached to your bag.
If you have no other ID tags on your bag, I'm sure that they can still locate it and identify it as "the untagged bag".
I just don't understand why you and others are so obsessed with fortifying and waterproofing the tags and belaboring all the ways to do it.:confused::confused:

It sounds like luggage tags are becoming a major chore - and expense!
Buy heavy stock paper, laminating sheets, pay for photo copying, gas to the difefrent stores and soon it approches the cost of paying for a second bag on the airlines!
I think I'll just get the tags at the port - much less hassle! :D

I`m going to purchase some 1/4 inch clear plexiglass.
Cut two pieces to size. (5"x5")
Place downloaded baggage tags between plexiglass sheets.
Seal edges with quality outdoor caulk.
Reinforce all four plexiglass corners with pop rivets.
Attach to luggage with tie wraps.
The only equipment I need to purchase will be a Band Saw to cut the plexiglass.
A drill for the rivet and tie wrap holes. And a rivet gun plus rivets.
Simple as pie.

I laminate my tags, cheap and fast. I also put string in the laminate. I do not trust
staples.

Good point.
This job will not be as easy as I first thought.
Now I have to purchase a piano.

Sounds like that tag will survive......of course, the handle to the bag might get torn off if the tag gets caught but hey you can't win them all. :D:rolleyes:

Pipedream62 + Mudscaper:
Do you think you can substitute the rope in your picture for the piano wire. That should hold the luggage tag on your bag.

At the bottom of your on-line check-in there should be a box that allows you to print your tags. The only reason I can think that it might not be there is if you're doing a guarantee category and haven't been assigned a cabin and I may be wrong in that assumption.
i'm doing a guarantee catetory, and when doing my on-line CHK at the bottom printed my tags.

Printed one set of luggage tags and slid them into plastic sheet protectors which will hold two tags. Cut them in half, and taped the edge. Fold in half and staple or tape. Very cheap !!!!!!!!!!
