just wondering what people are paying for mid summer flights from the U.S. midwest or Toronto to Barcelona and returning from either Rome or Venice?

I paid about $900 for round-trip from Chicago to Barcelona via New York JFK. Travel was in July, booked in about April. Returning from different cities than where you arrive will often add to the overall cost, unfortunately.

I'm also looking at the flights to Barcelona and I'd be returning from Venice in May 2010. A lot of my friends have done a similar cruise and told me absolutely NOT to fly from our area (Washington DC) to Barcelona or I'd be totally wiped out. From here I'd have to fly to Philly or NY, sit for a 5+ hour layover and then do an overnight flight for a total of 14 or 15 hours. I was told that no matter how much more it costs (within reason) that I fly from here to Heathrow (a 7.5 hour direct flight), spend the night at an AP motel and then the next day take a 2 hour flight to Barcelona. Then do the same thing in reverse, Venice to Heathrow, etc. That would be one RT flight from Washington DC to London and two one way flights and right now that cost is slightly under $1200. Since I'm not leaving until May, hopefully fuel costs stabilize and start to fall, maybe the cost of flights will come down too.

The biggest piece of advice I can give is to be sure to arrive at least a day before your cruise so that you can get over the jet lag and also so no delays or flight cancellations will prevent you from boarding the cruise.

No one can predict whether prices fall or rise. It truly is about supply and demand and the cost of other items such as fuel. Keep watching prices as they change often.

I agree and I'd never fly in the day of a cruise. My trip has 4 days pre cruise built in it as it now stands, one for Heathrow overnight, and 2.5 to 3 more to check out Barcelona before boarding the ship and also 3 days in Vence afterwards. I figure if I am paying that much for a trip to the Med, I want to at least get more of a feel for the pre/post cruise cities - more so than the 10-12 hours I may be in them as a port stop otherwise.

Try expedia or kayak for BCN for Barcelona and VCE for Venice, I took a peak a few weeks ago and I think between 800-1100 depending on how many stops, which carrier, and the specific times.

Original poster was looking for summer flights, October would be vastly different.

I, too, am pricing flights from the eastern US to Barcelona for July 2010, and even multi-stop flights are still running around $1200.

The airlines cut back on flights. Iberia and American code share. As a matter of fact, or flight from BCN to JFK July 2009 was overbooked. They were trying to convince people to take a deal. As for flying in the day before, that is well and good if your vacation schedule can handle it. Some people don't have that option.

I often fly, booked Atlanta-BCN R/T total 480. The key thing is to have a plan on when you want to travel and from where. All this talk about not flying the day of the cruise is just talk, Suggest once you have a plan start watching the sales, best day to hunt is Tuesdays and Wednesdays, sale fares come on and, when I was looking I spnedt a few minutes everyday, once I saw the fare, book it.

For what month did you receive that fare and in what month did you book it?
