Yesterday I received a promotional brochure from HAL offering some great values. For example, a “from” price of $399 for an inside or outside cabin on a 7 day cruise. Is this for real? I went on line, put in my Mariner # and the absolute lowest I could find even for the worst category was $507. Specifically, this was the Dec. 13th sailing out of Tampa on the Ryndam. What am I doing wrong here?:)

I received such a mailing from Holland America some months ago, and I called them after having the same experience as you. Over the phone, they would sell at the listed price. Perhaps it is a special mailing promotion and not offered anywhere else.

Shaking my head they can sell a cruise for such a low amount.

How can they maintain a high standard on such low prices?

Happy for those of you that scoop up a great deal. Congratulations.

When on line, do a make believe booking. when you select category. go to bottom of page and see where it says fare details and click on it. (or something like that) and it breaks it down. At that point, is when I see the lowered price, not the same as listed in categories above.Make sure you have already signed on with your mariner number.
On the Mexican Riviera cruises, the inside cabins do in deed start at $399.00 on some cruises. Princess does the same. Not for all sailing dates. Also those prices don't include port charges.
since I have never done an inside cabin, never have we cruised for such a low price. By the time you get to balcony and above, the bargains are not as good.

That's an excellent question, Sail.

I would imagine they just want to fill that ship and then hope that, once onboard, the people who did get an amazing deal will be more likely to spend money on drinks, shore excursions, spa packages, and the like.

At least that's the hope. I wonder, in practice, if that assumption holds true.

Even if HAL loses money on some of these super deals, at least maybe they hook a few new people who have been interested in trying cruising, or trying HAL, but thought the price was too high for them. Then HAL can make their money on later cruises! :)

I saw an ad on AOL yesterday for 7 days on the Westerdam starting from $387 (IIRC) on Nov.1st.
You just have to be flexible.

The mailed promos never include the port taxes. If there is a promo code, that often has to be used to get the promo price. You'd then get the promo price + port taxes.

You have to check those promotions carefully. It always says 'select dates only' and that price is only good for one sailing. If you choose one of the others listed, its a different price.

Thanks for all of your replies. What really surprises me on this is the $399 is also quoted for the outside cabin. After reading and re-reading several times it looks, in the fine print that "fares are based on the 11/1/09-11/15/09 sailings". I went back on the HAL site, put in November, and sure enough $399 is quoted even without me putting my Mariner in.:)
