Have looked at the plans and online brochure and it doesn't seem there is a library planned for the Epic. Does anyone know if this is the case? The library on the Jade was really handy...meant I didn't have to take many books on the plane ;)

Not a big problem...just wondering....

Interesting question. I can not imagine an NCL ship without a library. Keep in mind there is at least one more round of announcements of onboard amenities including at minimum more bars and food options. Maybe the library will show up on the final deck plans. Still lots of white space.

Thanks I'll keep a look out for more announcements in due course.....:)

For goodness sakes, buy a Kindle and carry two or three thousand books around with no problem. Absolutely, positively great for planes and ships.

Kindles are not available for sale in the UK - I looked when someone was asking about them - seems that they are only available from Amazon in the US. We do have Sony readers (can't remember the correct name).

Well, move here. Not only will you be able to effortlessly download as many books as you like while poolside with your Kindle, South Florida is a great place year-round.

What model kindle do you have, the Kindle 1 or the Kindle 2. I found a Kindle 1 on Ebay for like $199 (refurbished) and thought that was a good deal till I read a review that said they could only put like 100 books on it at a time. I was under the impression you could put hundreds of books on those things.

I also read a bad review of the Kindle 2.....not being able to retrieve a page....have to flip thur all the pages to get to a certain page and a few other cons I can't remember.

I so get this. I've read a few books digitally - it was perfect while I sat in the dark in my daughter's room as a toddler while she went to sleep - but 'real' books are paper, and you can hold them and turn the pages and see them on your bookshelf. :)

I use to feel the same way till we just had to clean my little reading and computer room out to make room for my elderly father to move in. Hundreds upon hundreds of books that I've read over my life time....I am 60 something and I saved every single one.

It felt like an accomplishment to see all my books lined up on my bookshelves. Now they simply are just taking up space that I need and I see no real reason to keep them, I mean, what am I really saving them for? I will never read them again. Do not watch rerun movies nor do I reread books so, ......I tied them all up ( saved a few special editions and a few that have memories attached...the rest I am taking to "Good Will"....that was an all day chore. That's when I decided to get a Kindle. I love to read so this will be a much better choice for me.

Uneamie,

I have a Kindle 2 (1500 book capacity) and I think it's terrific. By the way, I like your shot of a Gem minisuite. I have a Jewel minisuite reserved for a week in December, but I'm thinking of upgrading to the lowest level of Penthouse. Any thoughts? I have never sailed NCL before.

These days I reserve "real" books for gifts received and collecting (semi-rare sporting books and books about Trollope).

Hmm....well now, I've had the pleasure on my last NCL cruise of doing a "mini suite" and unless you really want to be pampered, the mini suite is perfect and much lower in price. However, we do want to eventually move up to the "pampering stage" LOL. I do want to know what it is like to have a butler, to be able to order food from all the restaurants and have it in our cabin, to have someone take care of all our reservations and have priority boarding. Not in real need of a larger room but I wouldn't complain that's for sure.

Of course everyone has their own likes and dislikes....if this is your first NCL cruise I'd have to say "freestyle" might just get you hooked. We love it. We've experienced other cruise lines and while they were all pretty terrific in and of themselves.....NCL comes in first for us. We loved our mini suite and our cruise experience with them...which is why we are going again.

So....if you can swing it, and you want that "pampering" go for it. If not, you will be just as happy with your "mini".

Have a great time!

BTW....still trying to figure out which Kindle to buy...the Kindle 2 is an upgrade but it's so pricey still... I may wait a bit on that.

Surprisingly (since I'm a packrat in general), I don't keep every book I read. Like you, I have 'special' ones. :) Also like you, the rest I give to charity. We do a yearly 'purge' and take books, toys, and clothes to one of our local shelters. As I said, I've definitely taken advantage of the ability to read on a pda or laptop, and I expect to have some sort of portable device like a kindle at some point as well. I'll always have a special feeling for books, though. I love to give them as gifts, also. Not only do they bring lasting enjoyment, but they're heavy and fairly durable, so they make for plenty of good 'present shaking'! :p

Oh I can surely relate to the "gift giving"....I love to give books as gifts to....I probably will never stop doing that unless they stop making books.....horrible thought I know but it could happen. They don't make "records" anymore...who'd a thunk it! ;)

Ha ha ha I've been thinking of records this whole time... those I haven't thrown out yet, though I'm not sure why. My husband did spend hours doing research online a couple of years ago to find a new needle for my turntable, but I haven't put it to much use. I know there are 'purists' out there who swear by vinyl, but I really don't miss the 'hiss'! :p

Hmmmmm... getting a bit off topic here...

Since I haven't actually answered the original post yet, I'll do that now! I'm in agreement with time2cruise1 that I find it hard to imagine any NCL ship - or any cruise ship period - without a library.

Putting the two ideas together, wouldn't it be interesting if someday the libraries on cruise ships were digital, and you could search them from your cabin?

You never know CanadianTwosome, some big-wig from NCL may read this and the next thing you know... Freestyle 6.0 featuring in-cabin digital book downloads;)!

lol....you sound like a kindred spirit to me! ;) I couldn't possible keep all the books I've ever had, far too many! Still have a large collection that I love though. There's certainly room for both books, and book-reading technology in the world...but I'll always love my books.

Still hopng to see a library on the Eclipse, and yes, maybe one day a digital one too :)

Or maybe instead of a library they'll have a series of Kindles pre-loaded and available to borrow from the front desk..... :) They can use the revenue from the new non-library space, to cover-off the cost of the kindles.

too early to tell you where it will be. A library is like a broom closet. A small space to store books for folks to climb & get one & sign it out.OK, a joke but it is too early with the stores, restaurants, staterooms all getting inserted and electricity & plumbing hooked up. There are plenty of places to insert a library as there are small stores that sell specialty coffee & bakery. They have a walkway built & there is 2 stores on both sides ready to attack for cash. You are going from the pool to the buffet.

There is plenty of for changes to be made, as they are getting the pieces of the new ship puzzle put together. As my CPP is told by her Supervisor, as changes are made to various locales onboard, we will fill in the cruisers. I was told that I am correct with the curtain pulling out of the wall at the shower door to the sink. They would expect the person showering to be locked safely in their stateroom before they get clean. So no one will be walking in on them. The movie screen at H2O will show flicks for families before the club opens, when the pool has been covered for safety. So that will probably go from 7-8:30pm, then by 9PM for dancing & drinking. If a cover is charged it will include 2 drinks PP. Any adult movies will show after 10PM if no entertainment will be performing.

So I had a great conversation with both to post answers here to CC.
