View Full Version : Has anyone ever hit a jackpot on slots on the ships?

Hi! I do enjoy playing the slot machines on cruises occasionally, but have never really won anything to speak of, and the machines seem rather "tight". I've never seen anyone hit a jackpot or come even close, and am curious if anyone has ever hit...I usually play the Quarter machines, max bet (.75) and it's a fun no stress type of entertainment until I decide I've lost enough money. (no more than $100. total) So...any big winners out there? I'd love to hear your stories!

I have won a few Royal Flushes on Video Poker machines. $1 machines with max bet ($5) was $4000. I think that I have hit 4-5 of these. I also hit one on a $.25 progressive Video Poker machine for over $5000 - so it is possible. Oh! one trip on Carnival I did keep hitting 4 of a kind which pays anywhere from $1200 to $2000 and I won so many times one night that when the casino personnel came to pay me, even they were amazed. And I always remember that crew as they didn't seem bothered in the least that I was winning a lot! Sometimes the casino staff act as though it is their money that they are paying out.... Last cruise on RCI the lady behind me hit the jackpot for a free car - BMW if I recall - and another lucky player hit $5000. Again, all $1.00 machines which can really eat up the gambling fast!

Other family members have hit regular jackpots - none over $1000 though and that was playing $1 denom.

I have been on several cruises and I play pretty regularly and have never won anything grand on a cruise, have done better in Vegas. Also have never seen anyone on a cruise win big other than at the slot tournament. Seems the Video poker machines are the way to go, I do hear people winning big on those. I should try that on my next cruise in December. IMOP, Casino's on a ship are strictly for entertainment, if you do win or come out ahead then that is a bonus!! Have a set amount when you get on board and have fun!

Only usually play 25 cent slots except on last night of Eurodam cruise last year when I tried a dollar machine.

Played 3 credits on a 25 cent slot on the Regal Princess on our first Princess cruise and won $2,500. On another won $500 each on 3 different nights.

On Eurodam last year was a bit ahead each night on 25 cent slots and on the last night my husband was trying to get me out of the casino and since I had about $100 left in credits I switched to a dollar machine and after about 5 minutes won $3,800. I cashed out after that!

On my first cruise and my first venture into a casino I won $600 on a 25cent Bow Tie slot machine. I had hit the button only twice. I had no clue what I had won when the light and sound went off. We used that money for our excursions.

just off the Enchantment two weeks ago and won $500 on a Five Times quarter machine. Played the $1 Wheel of Fortune daily and won nothing, but, as usual, saw several other people hit spins for $1000 toward the end of the cruise. Also heard of someone winning $3000 on a Wheel of Fortune machine. Did MUCH better on 3 card poker!

Was on the Holiday on Oct 1st and a lady won 40k on the wild cherry machine the last night everybody was yelling and she was crying btw I know this may be a stupid ? but do you have to pay taxes on winnings?

Nanny5
October 15th, 2009, 08:06 PM
If you received a W2-G form when you won then you'll probably have to pay. Most winnings over $1200 on slots is considered taxable as 'other income' on your filings. Even though you weren't on american soil, the IRS still looks at is as taxable income (i.e. same as if you were working in japan, you'd still pay partial taxes to the US). If they don't have your info or players card, you're probably cool.

Normally, I donate pennies and nickels while waiting for my DH to get finished at the blackjack table, and that's about it.

Several years ago, I had saved up a handful of quarters before we went on a spring cruise. DH told me to play any machines I wanted, but to play the max bet.

I won $20 on the very first pull on a X-factor machine, and thought I was doing quite well. However, the handful and the $20 went down very quickly at 3 coins per pull.

I was down to my last three quarters, so I put them in a Stampede machine, and started to walk off. Behind me, the machine eruped with music, lights, and moos. I had hit the top award - three 7's with horns on a 3 coin max bet for $625.

I couldn't remember my name, my cabin number or anything else. Luckily, DH was playing blackjack, and the casino folks took me to him.

I was such a mess, the casino guy remembered me... a year later on another ship. :D

What a blast. Nothing much since then, though.

My wife and I hit for over $3800 on the Carnival Inspiration. I hit two $1000 jackpots on the same machines on back to back days. Had my wife quit earlier we would had been way ahead. All machines played were $1 machines.

My husband & I have both hit royal flushes on Poker slots, more than once on NCL. 2 years ago when NCL had progressives, I hit for over $10,000 on a 1 cent, $3 max progressive on ncl Gem. I played that machine the whole cruise, up and down, I had a hunch and 3 nights before the end of the cruise the machine hit.

Good news: My wife won over $300 on a penny machine on the Grand Princess. It was on the first night on a transatlantic. On the last day she won another $100 plus on the same machine.

Bad news: I am still hearing about it! And I have no idea how much she lost between the first and last day.

The shareholders of the cruiselines and the casino concessionaires are delighted to have as many players as possible reminisce about the time they won a big jackpot in a cruise ship casino. Moreover, those who were multiple winners are really adored by the "house' because they are the biggest losers of all for just as surely as night follows day, those who play the most lose the most.

I am not opposed to all gambling. I like to play poker, bridge for money, even bet at the track (where the odds are not applied uniformly to the universe of betters), but I can not fathom the mindset of those who spend their $ and time at the machines and the tables in cruise ship casinos. Except perhaps for the card counters who can eke out favorable odds against the house at 21. I have no objection to their gambling, mind you, because their play helps to underwrite the cost of my cruise. No doubt the casino revenue helps to hold down the basic price of any cruise.

I am incapable of wrapping my mind around the concept that someone could enjoy a game of chance knowing the odds were stacked against them. The response frequently offered by gamblers as to why they indulge, to wit, "it's fun" or "it's worth the expense for the entertainment it affords" often combined with "and I only play with a set amount of money" fail to convince me. How can someone have fun knowing they are sure to lose if they continue playing. In the long run there are NO winners in a casino except the house. Furthermore, I suspect the unpublished machine odds in cruise ship casinos are significantly lower than in other shoreside gambling meccas. No doubt they have the lattitude to adopt the most favorable regulations available just like cruise lines can flag their ships in countries with favorable employment and tax laws. Ergo the casinos ar not required to publish their payout odds or probably even adopt a minimum payout. Anyone care to bet?

In any case, keep playing. I like being able to buy a cabin on a nice ship for less than $200 /day. While you are at it, take a few more excursions, buy enlarged photos, and get some spa treatments.

Because they want to preach their 'holier than thou' or 'I'm smarter than you' attitude.

You know the type of person - you see them in a bar and find any excuse to avoid them...

I enjoy my life - I like a smoke; a drink; a gamble; good food; cruising etc..

I'm as happy as a pig in muck - I pity people who want to spend their lives being miserable and preaching to others.

If I choose to spend my hard-earned on having fun, it is none of anyone else's business (except for my wife!)

Amen! These are people who gain their pleasure from judging others. Besides, it is my money. Except for my wife, who has the right to tell me where, how, and how much I can spend on what?

As the old saying goes, "Shrouds have no pockets!" I came in to this world with nothing, and I still have more than 95% of it!

Shalom and good luck. Andy.

Love reading all the "win" stories with the hope of it happening to me on my December cruise on Ruby Princess! I've won 2 slot tournaments with the payouts being $200 on one and $400 (NCL Star in May) on another. Hit a $600 jackpot on Celebrity's Millennium on a quarter machine. And for Owl61, I lost $1,000 on NCL's Sky last year but got comped a free cruise last weekend for my generous donations since I was up $800 at one point but did not quit! I only gave them $200 on the comped cruise and was able to drink for free.

I was on a Royal Caribbean ship on the promenade at a bar with a lot of friends when my hubby went to the men's room but took a loooong time to come back - he has been playing a $1 slot and hit for like $100 which I promptly took away and went to casino and played a $1 fishing machine (I usually play .25 and under - love pennies). I hit the machine for $800 that night after about $25 and the next night I was showing someone the machine I had hit on and threw in $20 and hit for $3,000 - paid for our cruise and then some - have hit up to $1,:)000 many times - love slots!

The odds and payouts also are controlled by who makes the machines. If the manufacturer that makes the machine also provides machines in Nevada, it has to be the same as the Nevada machine. That means that the lowest payout level is 75%, which actually sucks. If the NGC should ever find out that, lets say, a 10X machine on a ship acts differently or is somehow set lower than 75%, all of those machines would be locked up in Nevada until they could find out how it was done and correct it. I would bet on the cruise shipe they are set between 80% and 85% for $1 slots. The video poker odds you can calculate based upon the payouts. If Jacks or Better is paying 6 for a full house and 5 for a flush, those are about the worst odds you can get. Playing the slots and VP is usually a losing proposition, but if you are lucky and in the "right place at the right time" you can hit pretty good. Most of us lose, but it sure is fun!!!!
Taking my first cruise in 20 years with my wife and daughter, with other friends, and cant wait to play poker and hit the VP.

Supposedly, the higher the denomination the better odds of winning but I love the penny machines and I like the video machines and on pennies, I can play all lines as opposed to quarters on video machines - so try the quarters and see how you do - if no luck, go back to what you like and good luck!:D

won $7200.00 on $5 slot machine Mariner of the seas. Won $1100. on Brilliance of the seas $5 slot machine . Then, won $4000. on $5 slots again on Mariner. It would have been $8,000. but just discussed lowering play from 2 coins to 1 so we could play twice as long. A lady hit $4,000 about 30 min. prior to us hitting this one. We weren't upset about the lost $4,000. we would have won because we made the conscious decision that we would be happy with half the jackpot if we hit in order to prolong play. Won $500. a couple of times I think on the Majesty of the seas.

I've won many times,($10,000 was my largest payout) but my losses still exceed my winnings:( The cruise ships won't post it, but I feel the slots are set at about 81 percent, which is very tight, compared to Vegas at 92 percent and some Indian casinos at 96 percent. Your odds are much better playing the tables.

On my honeymoon in 2006, on Celebrity's Infinity, I won $1,000 3 times on Wheel of fortune dollar slot and $500 twice. Each time, I put $20 in and won before I lost the $20. I have never again won money at Wheel of Fortune. I think I must have been lucky because I also won the slot tournament on that sailing.

Me, nope, no luck in my pocket. But my Mom? She's been on about 8 cruises, and has only paid for the first. She wins enough playing slots to pay for the next cruise.. She used to do the same thing when she went to Reno.. some people are just lucky.. she even one one night when her and I were on the gulf coast in one of those towns, we were there to meet my X and pick up my kids. Mom hit the casino for 10 minutes and came back 400 dollars richer... me, nada

She swears I would win if I was more positive,, lol I've tried and no matter how positive I am, I lose, now I'm positive I will lose, so don't play...lol

I won $2000 on a Blazing Sevens dollar machine a few weeks ago on the Westerdam. Was waiting to enter a slot tournament when I tossed a $20 into the machine...hit on my 2nd pull! And they immediately gave me the cash PLUS the W-2G form :(. They also mailed me (upon my request) a win-loss for the trip. I also hit several small ($100 or less) progressives on the penny machines but note you DO have to bet max to hit those in most cases.

How can someone have fun knowing they are sure to lose if they continue playing.

Don't people know they lose money going to the movies, to amusement parks, etc. no matter what? I'm sure they do, but justify the cost to the amount of enjoyment they get doing such activities. Why can't those who gamble be allowed to use the same justification? People pay thousands to enjoy themselves at Walt Disney World with NO hope of getting their money back...if someone else seeks enjoyment at a casino (with their own budget), why would the same reasoning of "enjoyment" be considered ridiculous?

I usually avoid slots on the cruise like the plague. My last cruise on the Imagination in October, I tried a few penny slots with max bets and won some of the smaller progessives. 500.00,750.00, and 1100.00. My luck could not have been more freaky. I could not win on the tables, but the slots kept me playing.

I just returned from the Jewel of the Seas and was really lucky, hitting several jackpots on $1 deuces wild video poker and a fun 2 cent game. I was playing the maximum on the machines. Usually, I end up losing on these cruises but this time the jackpots paid for my cruise, my onboard purchases plus a few thousand extra which was great! I did not receive any W2-G forms and was told by the cashier that the IRS does not deduct income tax on cruise ships as they are in international waters.:)

Keep in mind that payouts include every penny that has been won. So when you get .25 and you win .15 that is .15 that goes into the "payout" pool even if you end up losing every cent. You will never get the casino to tell you how much they profitted on a cruise.

My experience on Century 3/2009:

Last year I ran down to guest services (my card wasn't opening the door) and since there was a bit of a line, I walked up to the Casino and put a $5 in the 3 diamonds machine.

She put in 20. won 500, while the casino people were fetching her money, she put 20 in the machine next door, and won 600. Put that cash away (now 1100) and spent the rest of the cruise playing on the original 600. Came home with 1700 which ment she lost 0. Only my Mom could do this.. so she has enough for another cruise.

just off the Enchantment two weeks ago and won $500 on a Five Times quarter machine. Played the $1 Wheel of Fortune daily and won nothing, but, as usual, saw several other people hit spins for $1000 toward the end of the cruise. Also heard of someone winning $3000 on a Wheel of Fortune machine. Did MUCH better on 3 card poker!

Speaking of the Enchantment....I won $220.00 on a nickel machine..big for me!

2nd night in I hit for over $900 in a matter of minutes. I was playing the $1 slots, got $800 - cashed out, then played the machine next to it and got another $100 on the first spin! Paid for most of my trip!! Going again in March 27th (Western Carib) and hoping to do it again or possibly more this time!!! :):):):)

Nov. on the Dawn hit for $2500 on nickle machine Throughout cruise had a few more hits in $759-1200 range. Having used the CAS card was rewarded with $400 off my final bill. Also qualified for comped cruise will be sailing on Dawn again in a suite for $510 for 2!
I'd gamble without these perks so this was just an added bonus This also solidified my loyalty to NCL.

No luck here. We play after dinner and never win anything to brag about. I'm curious, do you play into the wee hours of the night? Is there anything in the timing of playing the slots?

Just got off the Oosterdam and my husband won $1600 on the $1 Wheel of Fortune machine. This is the largest amount he has ever won both on cruises and in casinos. We also won on the same machine smaller amounts of money. He says that this is the first time he has left a cruise with more money than when he started. As for me... well, let's just say that I made up for his winnings in my losses. DARN!

When we were on a Celebrity cruise down to the Caribbean last year, my DH hit the Let IT Ride table for $8,000 and they just handed him the cash in an envelope- no paper work of any kind. No record or taxes. Sweet enough.

I'm a slots player and the best I've ever done on a cruise ship is about $1200 on one machine but that was built up over an evening and it was only a .05 machine. I have had a few $500 bonus payouts over all the time I've spent in ships' casinos.

Good luck to everybody! R.L.

Something to be mindful about when you receive a W2-G is: ask the cruise line's casino host for a win-loss statement. This will offset the tax bite...because everyone clearly has lost before the big win! The casino monitors your play via your sign & sail card (if playing slots as I do) or by having a pit boss monitor & record your play.

It's worth the effort believe me. I've done this several times, & am now actually late in requesting one from the Triumph cruise in June.

Itzkelly, I don't know if you're still around but I agree with you that you have to look at gambling as a form of entertainment like going to Disney. I don't get massages but DH always wants to spring for one of those packages as a treat to me on cruises. I decline and tell him to just hand me the cash for the massage and I'll get it in the casino! I think I may have to visit the FL Indians tomorrow for my Valentine's Day massage! :)

Here's an interesting article on the tax liability on cruise ships..

http://www.cruise-casinos.com/jackpots.htm

As someone stated the odds are set at the factory but generally they are going to start around 75% or so and work their way up to around 97%. Also, the lower the denominination will have the lower odds with the odds increasing as you go from a penny to five dollars or so..You may have a bank of the same machines all set at different odds, trick is to find the one that is the highest. A couple of posters alluded to them winning at the end of the cruise, this has nothing to do it. In my years on these boards I have seen people referring to winning at the beginning of the cruise, end of the cruise, on sea days, all types of combinations. The #1 myth of slot machines is that they can be changed by the cruise line or casino. As stated earlier the machines are set at the factory and with current technology are not changed. Bottom line is they do not have to change them as even at 97% they get 3% back.

I've noticed some responses saying they won 8-900 dollars and while waiting to be paid hit additional jackpots. Isn't jackpots $1,200 and above hand paid while those below are added to your ticket receipt and printed out when you cash out. Do cruise ships do it differently ?

I've been home a week from our Eclipse cruise. I play max on the penny slots and hit the minor and major jackpot on 2 different slots as well as many other prizes. Played those 2 machines the whole 2 weeks and they paid out well until the last couple of days. Also paid wheel of fortune and pulled out $800. Won about $8000 all up. Just as well I win quicker on the slots than my DH looses at Blackjack :D

Just back from Mariner.....two of us hit Royal Flushes for $4000 - I also hit 4 aces with kicker on Triple Bonus machine for another $4000 - all within 15 minutes or so. Two daugters hit 3 aces for $2000.......So we did quite well! One daughter ran $100 up to $1200 at blackjack.....

Not to say this was not a "fluke" but it is possible! And I LOVE Video Poker so win or lose I am going to play! It was just nice to have so many large winnings in order to hand out hundred dollar bills to all my family members to keep playing throughout the cruise!

And I am NOT going to tell you how much I actually brought back! haha But I didn't care....it was "winnings" and everyone had a great time!

One night playing BJ I cashed out for $1000. I was at a table of girls that closed down the casino at 2:30am! This was on a Carnival Cruise (don't remember which ship) probably about 14 years ago but had the time of my life. At that time I only played BJ, no slots or VP. Now a days I am really into VP and penny slots but also still love BJ. I live in Dallas so the only casinos are the Indian casinos in OK. I don't play much BJ there as you have to give them .50 cents a hand and I hate that! I will be on The Pearl 10/24 so hopefully I can come back with more money then I went with!

Well I am living proof of a "BIG" winner. I was on a cruise in 06 Carnival Destiny and won 15,000.00 on a triple/double stars machine.
It was our second day and we were scheduled to be in Dominica, but after we left St Thomas the night before a woman had a heart attack and in the middle of the night they took her back to port so we could not stop in Dominica. They opened the casino up at 10am, so hubby and headed down there. I had 300 dollars in my purse and walk up to a rown of machines that 3 ladies were playing at. One of them said "this machine sucks" so they moved across to another bank. I walk up and put 100 dollars in. It was a multi demo machine 1/5/10/25 dollar, 2 credit max machine. I spun the max credit at $5 (10 total) and nothing...I almost cashed out, but decided to hit it one more time.......Jackpot, 3000 credits. I thought I won 3K but it was credits so it was 15K.....and while I was waiting for them to pay me...I hit 5k more on wheel of fortune! People were freaking out in the casino...I could not stop winning it was actually kinda scary after a while.

The casino comped every cocktail that I and my party consumed in the casino for the whole cruise, which totaled about 4K..there were 6 of us.

What I bought with my total of winnings...2 more cruises one with just me and huby and another for the whole family 10 of us. A diamong ring for my husband and for each of my kids. My totally winnings for the entire cruise was just over 26K. They paid me all in cash and yes I was W2-g'd. I wright off my expenses so I paid no tax on those winnings that year.

It was an absloute AMAZING once in a lifetime trip.

Also the woman who had a heart attack ended up being ok..funny how the ship was named the Destiny.......

Contact-I emailed- CAS, and ask for a win-loss statement. You'll be asked the ship, dates you traveled and, if I remember correctly, the cruise number of the ship. If you saved your reservation and/or boarding pass, the number will be on that. This part was not mandatory.
You can also call them.

Thanks--I thought it was over 3K. CAS stands for Casinos At Sea. I believe its for all Carnival and Carnival-owned ships, like Princess, Costa,Holland America, etc.
I just found my statement. I think you said you were on Grand Princess. This is from Princess Players Club. The info is: Michael Bayona, Player Development Coordinator,Carnival Corp. Casino Div., 1-800-522-7466 ext.#16034. Email is:mbayona@carnival.com
Wait til you see your statement! Info is based on data received from the "Slot Tracking System" and records play only when you use your card. It gives you total hours of play, total wagers, wins and, naturally, total win and total loss.
I won a hand-paid jackpot at a local casino and 1600$ in taxes were automatically paid. So now I'm getting all my win-loss statements from any casino I played at this past year. Hopefully, I'll get some of that money back!:D:D

August 2010 I took my first cruise on the Sapphire Princess to Alaska from Seattle. I played the Wheel of Fortune machine (dollar slot) and hit the 1,000 spin at the top. The second night I played the machine to the right of the first one and did the same. On the third night I did it on the first machine again. I put much of it back in on other machines and spent the rest on the ship, but it sure was a rush! I know that they pay off sometimes, but the odds are NOT in the players favor! Do not forget to ask at Gage about hot machines - if asked right they give hints - a little pleading helps - otherwise for get it - they tell you there're all hot!!

I know it sounds strange asking the gatekeeper for the exit key but if done right with right amount of tip - sure helps sometimes - especially if they been up on long shift!!

Also, do not forget to ask your cabin attendant - what goes around comes around in money matters if approached the right way. Do not be serious but joking ask them if they have heard/know/etc - it can pay off big if done correctly

My experience is that Carnival casinos have better payouts then Vegas. I only play slots. Iíve made serious bank on each cruise. I budget to blow $100 to $200 a day. I usually hit $700 to $1000 at the beginning of the cruise and play with their money the remainder of the week and know when to walk away up!!! If you break even thatís ok too, hopefully you had FUN!

The 1st day I had a few too many rums and I was a bit hung over the next morning..
I got up and was just getting used to the decks on this large ship and stumbed upon the casino.. LOL they just opened it and I was the 1st one in .. the place was empty and I stuck $20 in the wild cherry $1 progressive.. After 2 spins I hit the jackpot .. It was $4100..

I sat at the chair and waited and waited and waited.. Anyways about 15 minutes later someone finally comes over and acknowleges the win ..
I am all excited as no one knew I won , we went with another couple.. The songs and whistles still playing and people are sticking there heads in a congratulating me.. the machine was quite close to the exit..

When low and behold my wife sticks her head in and jumps up and down..

So I really didn't win anything as she went on a shopping binge the rest of the week..
They gave her 41 $100 bills and no paperwork to fill out...

And yes we are still married ( 18yrs )..

How much tax did you have to pay on these winnings? :D

If you win over $1100 you will be given a tax form which you must report on your yearly taxes. You can claim losses up to your winnings but you need to have proof to show in case you are audited. Keep your losing lottery tickets as they can be used also. Casinos track your play and wins/losses if you use their players card. Table games it's best to cash out before hitting the $1100 mark.

On Nov. 1, 2009, the first night of our 14-day cruise, I hit $8,000 playing KENO, winning on my usual 6-spot of numbers. I hit 5 out of 6 and then upped my bet to $5/spin to win that $8k. While sitting at the bar some nights later, I hit 7 out of 8 for $1,650 and did that again that same night!

Since each jackpot was over $1,200, they issued me tax forms. I never had to pay any taxes on it because I claimed the $11300 gambling winnings and claimed $11300 in losses which equals $0 taxes to be paid. :)

The Tax form is called a W2G........certain gambling winnings.
If you claim a loss of the same amount as your winnings you need to be able to prove it.........trust me on this:(
And should you "forget" to claim those winnings(or one of your winnings if you have more then 1 W2G) they will catch up to you and get their taxes..........again, trust me on this:eek:

The very first night I put in $1.00 on a quarter machine and on the very first pull, won $1,000. My husband went on to win the ship's slot tournament and won a trophy, shirt and about $500.00.. On the last night, he put in 3 dollars and won $1,000. It was alot of fun.. especially the slot tournament. Everyone should try it!!

Hit the Grand Princess for $1750 on .25 machine near the cage. Then later
that same night hit the 1.00 Wheel machine for 1k. NICE!!! Always play 3 card and Let-it-Ride bonus. One night hit 2 straight flushes and 3 of a kind on the same table(paid for the cruise) I think I saw them throw that dealer overboard later that night. He delt 5 straight flushes and 2 3 of a kinds in 25min. Never seen anything like it before. Will be on FOS in 2012.

just off the Enchantment two weeks ago and won $500 on a Five Times quarter machine. Played the $1 Wheel of Fortune daily and won nothing, but, as usual, saw several other people hit spins for $1000 toward the end of the cruise. Also heard of someone winning $3000 on a Wheel of Fortune machine. Did MUCH better on 3 card poker!

Love 3 card!!!

Hiya all, am so looking forward to trying the slots ( or pokies as we call them in New Zealand) on our first cruise in September but have a couple of queries.

Here in NZ we do not pay taxes on winnings of this type so would the taxes (American) apply to us?

Also if you buy casino coins prior to cruising (as you can with Holland America) are they for the slot machines or for the tables. As you can tell I am not used to your casinos.

Many thanks in anticipation of a response. Kia Ora

I've only been in the blackjack tournament. Cost $20 to enter. You then have to qualify or get your name on the board. The highest 7 players go into the finals. everything is explained by the dealer. all our given the same amount of chips and you play 7 hands the player with the most chips gets $500. I did not win but came in 2nd Each of the 7 finalist got a tshirt.

Just off the DREAM in May and was playing penny slots - Power Strike. On the third night, I hit a JP worth around $1, 600.00:D:D.

It was awesome....

2 days later, my BFF hit the machine next to it for $1,500.00 - DOUBLE PARTY TIME!!!

One of the few times that I actually came home with some cha-ching....

I can't answer your tax question for sure - although I don't see why you'd have to pay taxes on winnings since your country of residence doesn't require it. If the ship did (for some reason) take out the taxes, there must be a way for you to get the money back.

On NCL (and I think on most other lines) Table games are played with chips that you buy with cash at the table, then cash out at the cashier cage when you leave.

Slot machines are played with cash to begin with. The machines pay out on a printed ticket, which you can either insert in another machine, keep to play another day on the cruise, or cash out at the cage, which ever you'd prefer.

NCL has no system of buying "Casino Coins" in advance that I'm aware of. There is at least one website that will sell you casino tickets in advance at a discount. They have these tickets for several different cruise lines, but I've never used them. A search of this forum should find that information.

Hope that helps some!

A few years ago on the Carnival Liberty, I was at the sports bar getting my drink on....I watched a lady for about an hour, pumping dollar after dollar, without any luck...I made the decision that after she got up I was going to play the machine, so I got into stealth mode and waited across from the machine but still in the bar. The second she got up I hopped on the machine, put a $20 in (i think) and BAM....$500.00 JP baby!

On Carnival Dream, 31 October 2010, our first sea day, I won $9,000 on a penny slot machine that I had fed about $5. This was just before 9 a.m., with only a handful of players in the casino. My husband had to leave the casino to notify a ship's employee that there was a winner who needed assistance. Within 10 minutes we were swamped with Casino personnel. Of course we were issued a W2-G as a reminder to claim the winnings on our tax return. I always had thought the big winners occured when the casino was busy...no more! On our last sea day (miserable weather...doors blocked due to gail force winds), I hit on the same bank of machines repeatedly throughout the day, netting $1200 for that day. DH and I had to split the cash in order to go through customs upon departing the ship. (Limit of $10,000 pp cash) Before, I had never been a winner of more than $100 or so. This was definitely a lucky and fun cruise!

Royal flush for a grand was nice, but the best one (less money) was last year on the last day when I was playing 3 card poker.
I played about three hours with 100 and had 30 left so I played blind with 15 on the bonus bet. Straight flush.
I didn't even realize it until the table went wild. Over 600. It made me even for the cruise so it was nice.

I'm not sure if the reason US Citizens don't get a W-2 for more than $1200 in winnings is that in International Waters, it is not required? In US territorial waters, it is?

Out of 38 cruises my biggest win was $1350 a couple years ago. On the Valor a couple weeks ago I'd been playing the quarter machines....and losing as usual. I took the last $30 I had on my card and decided to put $10 in 3 different dollar machines, playing $1 at a time. Lost on the first machine and had spun 3 times on the second machine when 3 "triples" came up....$1500 and I was thrilled. I've got to remember to get win/loss statements from Carnival cause since I'll be darned if I pay any taxes after all I lose every cruise!

And I had to provide photo ID before they'd hand over the cash so a tax form could be delivered to my cabin before the end of the cruise

It's not because of Int waters. The same rules exist in Vegas for jackpots over $1200.

It has nothing to do with where the ship is. It has everything to do with where the company that owns the ship is based.

For instance on NCL, a U.S. citizen will get a W2g for a jackpot at or above $1200 because the company is a U.S. company and follows U.S. revenue laws.

I played one time and it started to spin and spin and spin and spin. I ended up with $951 not a jackpot but it was to me. I handed the cash to my DH and he was shocked. (Waiters got more than $10 each) we headed to casino after dinner and I won 250 on Wheel of Fortune and 300 at roulette Left the casino with 1200 and no tax form because it was not one win. Resurrecting this thread because we still have 22 days until our next cruise and I have read everything else on the board lol

The last nigt of our honeymoon on Caribbean princess, we saw a lady hit for 1200 so we sat down across the aisle and hit 1232. Since they were busy paying her out, we played a machine next to us and hit 5000. He second machine was black and white double jackpot. The first was a quick hit. after all that excitement, we won 11000 nickels on an instant winner machine. It was a great end to a great honeymoon!
Sadly the next day when I looked at our final bill, it turns out the waitress that had taken care of us the whole cruise double charged us for every celebratory drink we had that night. princess did rectify the situation and refunded all the drinks from that night!

Carnival ships. 1am to 2am is best time to hit. On one sailing I hit the JP twice in one morning. $10'000 and $3'000. Slot penny machine. Ive been spoiled for years on Carnival; VIP boarding, free drinks (now a Drinks on us card before the casino opens first night), gift bags with polo shirts, etc. My biggest tip is get to know the host on board and the VIP reps in Miami corporate. They are the best and will treat you great!

Can't help you specifically with the Enchantment, but as a long time cruising casino player, I can tell you that in general you should not expect much from slots on cruise ships.

In general, payback percentages are set very low on cruise ships. There's no reason for them to be set anywhere near normal land-based casinos, since they have a captive audience with no where else to spend their gambling dollars. You will usually find a mixture of mediocre and low paying machines, but if you're lucky you can find one of the mediocre ones and stretch your playing money a bit.

Of course, random chance does work in any casino, on land or sea, and you will always have the possibility of hitting a jackpot. Best of luck to you...let's hope that happens!

People say slots are tighter on the ships. But I've hit a "jackpot" (relative term) in two of my six cruises. Each was over $1,000, which is way better than six trips to land-based casinos for me. Both were on the last sea day, too. Still, I think it is all random...either you get lucky or you don't.

Once on Carnival I was spending the last 30 bucks on my card on the final evening at 1am. Ended up winning 6000 on the next to last spin on a 2345 times pay 4 reel dollar machine. Cashed out and went to bed.Prior to that won over 8000 playing 3 card poker over the last 4 days on the ship on Majesty of seas.:D

ANY LUCK ON HAL SHIPS? Best I'v done was on a quarter machine on Zaandam hit for $200 max bet I think was $1.25 Must say the quarter fliper on that ship was the biggest rip ever I know they are mony suckers in the first place but that one was constantly "tilting" and keeping ALL the coins that fell not just on the sides.

*** UPDATE *****

Hit the 5X pay 25 cent machine for 6000 coins on Zaandam on the first pull! Casino on Westerdam no fun though.

I have stopped sitting at tables of eight in dining as there is always delightful conversation at the table until the one Debbie Downer begins to lecture on the state oe the cruise line, the temperature of the hot tubs, how can one survive without a highlighter, magnets,or extension cord, bingo, the art sale, or gasp the casino odds. Gambling is a social event and partcipate to have fun and make new friends. Look at any craps table and see the fun. The gambler is not concerned about the odds, they are having a good time, just like the guy in the cigar bar smoking his cigar or the lady buying inches of gold. If these activities don't interest you no worries, there is always the library.

I hit the $7,500 Platinum Quick Hit progressive ($1.50 bet on penny slots) on Carnival a few years ago. I asked how often someone won, he said it averages about every cruise someone wins a decent slots jackpot.

I was a bit tipsy (okay, I was drunk) and was just hitting the button and not looking at the screen. Then I was confused and thought I won $750 before I realized there was another 0. I sobered up very quickly after that. But then I suddenly didn't worry about my bar tab anymore... :)

I've won frequently on cruise slots (never the gigantic payouts, usually the $400 range), by following advice I read on this forum.
Many cruise lines set their slots to pay out a lot on the first night out, and somewhat on the last night, then make the machines cold as ice the middle of the cruise.
I tested the theory and it has worked many times for me, but usually only on the first night, not the last.
Trying to avoid the slots in the middle of the cruise when you are at your most bored and the lights are flashing is very hard, but if you avoid them during the middle of the cruise, you tend to come out a winner.
Awkwardly, the cruise only pays in cash, which makes you look suspicious at customs. I've spent a lot of time in customs after the cruise explaining why I have so much cash on my person.

One cruise frustrated me. I took a new date and her spoiled daughter on the cruise. I successfully won the mini-jackpot (about $500) the first night, then advised her NOT to play again for mid-cruise. Her daughter absolutely lost her mind over the jackpot, and went to the money stash repeatedly during mid-cruise and lost it all.

Mid-cruise slots is very frustrating...to go 10 and 20 spins without even a two coin return defeats the fun.

Vegas's secret is they set their slots to pay off somewhat less than half the time, so you get a lot of Pavlovian feed-back, even though you are gradually losing. You walk away happy and spend more.

I won a minor jackpot (around $40) on a penny slot machine on one of my cruises last month. It was one of those machines where the minor jackpot is won before it reaches $50 and the major jackpot is won before reaching $500.

Customs (Canadian & American) doesn't give a damn, unless its over $10,000, and that's only if you don't declare it. If you win a big jackpot, you take a picture of the machine or have other proof that it isn't the proceeds of crime and they don't do anything.

Having a few hundred to a few thousand, they wouldn't blink an eye about it.

Also, if you win a big enough jackpot, they will have a cheque written for you if you request it.

Yes, they were. Had one Royal, one 4 aces with the kicker and 2 with 4 deuces on the deuce's wild game.

Playing the penny machines on Explorer of the Seas, 2nd night, betting .60, only put in $20, within a few spins, hit for $600, 2 months ago.

A few years ago, same ship betting only .90 cents a spin on a Life of Luxury machine, max was $2.40. It was the day before our last night and during that day on different spins each of the gems popped up, opal, ruby emerald, sapphire and diamond. Was able to select each gem correctly (which is tough without playing max.) and won well over $2000 that day. Glad it was near the end of the cruise and was able to go home with the majority of the money.

Not a ship but at our local racino a couple days ago. Played $2 and hit the free spin wheels. 12 free games. Hit the free spin again, now 24 free games. WOuld youbelieve it, I hit the free spins again. 36 free games. How much do you think I got back? $3.50. I sort of mentioned that to the service desk on the way out. She couldn't believe it. I told her I would be back on July 32nd.

I couldn't believe it. I've visited casinos for 50 years now and have not seen anything like that. Some things I just don't understand.
