Does anyone know if they are still running tours of the ship? We will be on the Rotterdam in February and I know that my Dad would love this! What does this tour include?

What to you mean by "running ship tours". Will your Dad be on the ship with you are did you want to bring him on as a guest in a port?
If you mean a tour of the Engine Room, I believe that since 9/11 it is no longer allowed since. Or, do you mean a tour of the Bridge? Sometimes the Captain will invite guest to the Bridge when the ship is leaving port, but they no longer have "open" tours that you sign up for.

Sometimes there is a tour of the kitchen. But like Esme posted, no Bridge or Engine room tours since 911.

I am a retired USN ship driver, and one of my table mates is a Merchant Mariner. We were advised to not even ASK for a tour. Pity.

There is normally a tour of the pax area the first day usually in afternoon. If you means this tour it is only for pax.

No I meant a ship tour like of the engine room etc. My parents will be with us and staying in a suite. My Dad was in the British Navy on a destroyer and I think he would have liked a tour..... So sad if there are not any. Maybe the bridge?

Toad - if they are in a Suite, have your Dad explain to the Concierge that he was in the British Navy and ask if she would speak to the Captain or if your Dad's sees the Captain tell Dad to speak to him. I do know they make exceptions, so you never know. ;) Good Luck.

I know this isn't what you are asking about, but others might like to know that sometimes there are art tours of the ship. They can be very interesting, and are usually well attended.

I think it's worth asking. It's official policy almost across the board to not allow bridge or engine room tours, but from time to time I hear of it happening. A nice hand written note to the Captain? A special mention to the Social Hostess? Whatever, give it a try, be polite and try to make it relevant (aka, Dad was in the Navy, etc.)

The last tour we did as suite passengers of the bridge was on the Ryndam in October of 2001 before security was tightened on the ships.
I have seen a passenger or 2 at times in the bridge - guests of the captain. You really have to be in the in-crowd. We are not among those priveledged people.
There will be a general tour of the ship - takes you through the public areas and lounges, dining room, etc. Times are posted in the daily program when you get on the ship - this is only on embarkation day.
Then there is also a "champagne" (orange juice with a drop of champagne now-a-days) tour of the spa area.
Sometime during the cruise there will be kitchen tour followed by a cooking demostration.
