I know about the roaming charges etc. on my cell phone on board ship but what about receiving and sending emails on my blackberry? If we're docked will I be charged the shps rate?

I am a bit curious about this myself, I have a new Verizon Omnia that every 15 minutes uploads new emails to me. I wonder how this gets charged or even if it does or is it constantly on so that I would be charged for every minute the phone is on . I can change it so it only uploads every 2 hours but sometimes I leave my phone on for 30 minutes or so when waiting for our son to text us back.
Verizon has offered to switch my connection for when I travel on the ship to my old phone but it is so much easier to text on the new one :o

I have used my blackberry on five HAL cruises in the last year, including Maasdam. I have international with ATT and have not been charged anything for all email received either at sea or in port. I do not accept telephone calls when at sea, so I dont know if I would be charged by the Sea plan - bet i would.

What about sending, Harry? Were you charged to send?

I have a blackberry via Verizon. I have activated "Global Email" or whatever the plan is - which is basically international roaming with data.
$2.49/min for voice
.10 for texts
$20/MB for raw data (like tethering or web browser via blackberry)
Unlimited Email.
Yes - unlimited email.
That's per their website - and specifically advises the unlimited email portion for cruise ships.

That's great as we also have Verizon. My husband had talked with someone there who said pretty much what you did but we didn't know what it was called. Sure alot cheaper than the email aboard ship. Thanks everyone for all the advice.

Make sure you have it activated, confirmed on your account and do an update roaming (*228 I think) before you leave the United States! Depending on the carrier, it can be difficult to over-the-air-program a phone outside your home carrier's calling area.
