2 of my young friends are going on their first cruise on the Eurodam. They booked a balcony guarantee and were assigned cabin 8113, a V cabin on the Navigation Deck. It looked like a good cabin to me, but is it considered an "upgrade" compared to the guarantee balcony they paid for. I know it is below the Lido which could be noisy, but they won't mind. Nice to be able to climb the stairs just one flight to get to the Lido.

Just curious about your expert opinions.

Thank you.

PS I think I get just as excited about first time cruisers as I was the first time I cruised in 1978!

I keep trying to post this but it doesn't show up. I'm trying again and submitting this reply thinking that maybe this will work!

Can't really answer your question.

What type category did they originally book as a guarantee?

IMO, this is not an upgrade. They paid for a "V" guarantee and that is what they received. If they were given a "VA" or something like that would be considered a slight upgrade.

However, this cabin is in a very convenient location, close to the lido and the pools, etc.

Maybe I'm being picky but I don't consider getting moved from a lower V category cabin to a higher V category cabin an upgrade per se. Yes, some cabin locations are better than others even within a category but the cabins are pretty much all the same. Talked to a TA just a few months ago who was all excited about being able to get us an upgrade from a SY to an SS. In fact, the cabins were on the same deck and actually only a couple cabins apart. OK fine, maybe the SS was in a slightly better location but other than that it really wasn't an upgrade. Now, upgrade us from an SY to deluxe suite and that's a real upgrade! :)

A balcony "guarantee" is just that. You pay X amount and are guaranteed to get assigned a balcony cabin. It is a gamble and therefore the lower price.

Sometimes they are bad assignments, sometimes they are good assignments and sometimes they are very very good assignments :D

TexanCruiser is right....so it isn't an "upgrade"....but it is a good assignment.

"V" is the "highest" subcategory of verandahs. Those subcategories can be deception, as "higher" isn't necessarily better. The possible drawback I can see to this cabin is there might be noise from the Lido restaurant above. On the other hand, that also means coffee and breakfast are only a short dash up the stairs. :)

Changes within a cabin classification are considered an upgrade by HAL. But, as KK posted, without knowing what category was booked there is no way to know if this was an upgrade or not.

But, isn't the main thing to be on the ship, in a cabin that's comfortable and well-serviced, at a price you're willing to pay?

I've never paid a "lower" price for a guarantee, and I have booked several for various family members over the years. If I book, say, an HH guarantee, it is the same as booking a specific HH cabin.

Certainly moving from an obstructed view to an unobstructed view [or even less-obstructed view] is an upgrade.
And most consider moving from a VF [is that the one with the steel balcony?] to a VB or VA to be an upgrade.

If you look at it price-wise to define it, an upgrade would be any time you move from the cabin you booked to a cabin that cost more! :D

As far as the OP's question: Isn't a V one step higher than a VA? If her friends booked a lower "V" cabin [Va, VB, etc.] then moving to a V is an upgrade.

On the Eurodam, V is a specific category, above VA.

"V" is the "highest" subcategory of verandahs.Except for VQ.
