View Full Version : My Overnight Cairo Itinerary - Doable?

My family of four (2 40's adults, daughters are 19 and 22) is sailing on the NCL Jade over the holidays and have been trying to come up with a custom itinerary (with Ramses) for our overnight stop in Alexandria. I think we have narrowed it down, but want to run it by those who know better to see if it will work (worried about timing, weekend hours, etc). All stops would be guided. Keep in mind that our two favorite activites are eating local food and drinking in the culture - the sights are important, but we hate the whole "let's see it all" mentality - so maybe you can understand why we are skipping some stops.

Our ship is in port from 7am Saturday to 6pm Sunday. We are planning to leave the ship ASAP and head to Saqqara first. We figure we will make the Dosjer stop and tour. Do we need to go to the Red or Bent Pyramid site as well? We are thinking you could see the others in the distance from the first stop, is it worth it to make the other stops?

Next we would head to the Museum for the afternoon, seeing both the Tut exhibit and the Mummy Room. While we would spend a few hours at the museum, I know we will be museumed out after a while, so don't want to spend too much time.

Late afternoon, we would head to Khan el Khalili bazaar. I know it won't be as great as Fna square in Marrakech, but this is one of our favorite things to do - just wander, look (maybe buy), and take in the culture. We will be spending quite a bit of time there, figuring on about a 4pm arrival and staying until early evening. We would like to have a local dinner nearby and are looking for suggestions. Does "Khan" have an evening personality? I hear the shops don't close until about 9pm, is this true during the winter?

For the night, we have the option of staying either in Cairo (Sheraton, Hyatt or Marriott) or Giza (Le Meridian). We are leaning toward the Sheraton Cairo, based on location and hotel benefits. Has anyone stayed there (or the other Cairo properties) recently? We really could go either Cairo or Giza, but think that Cairo would be much more convenient in case we stay out late and we don't mind giving up the pyramid view.

Next morning we would have a quick snack at the hotel and head to Giza for the Pyramids. After touring, we would like to have an early lunch at Barry's Oriental - we hear it's great but would love some input. We would head back to Alexandria after lunch, avoiding any last-minute rush. Depending on our arrival time, we would do a quick driving tour of Alexandria - possibly stopping at the mosque, catacombs, or library - any recommendations as to which? Back on the ship by 4-5 pm would be ideal, and by leaving Giza by noonish, I think we are safe.

Please advise if you think there are any snags in this plan, as we are still in the planning stage and can make any changes (mostly concerned about hotel reservations) to the entire itinerary direction. Thanks for your input!

You've obviously put a lot of thought into you plans so far -- looks good!

I typed a lengthy response that the server ate, and I don't have time to recreate the whole thing, so to hit the high points:

Saqqara -- spend more time there and skip the Red and Bent pyramids. While they are worthwhile, there is a lot at Saqqara to see. Be sure to see at least one of the mastaba tombs. The wall decorations are as close as you'll get to the Valley of the Kings without actually visiting Luxor.

Stay in Cairo overnight. I enjoy the hustle and atmosphere of the city. Just be forewarned that it's noisy. Only reason to stay in Giza is if you're keen on getting up early next morning and seeing the pyramids before the crowds get there; also a stunning sight. Some say a morning camel ride is fun. (I'm not partial to the beasts myself...)

Bazaar: I've loved it both times I visited. Get your guide to take you to the less touristy spots away from the entrances. Unfortunately, the entrance areas stock a lot of junk made in China. But don't despair; plow into the heart of the market. (Yes, it does have a night personality).

Restaurants: in the bazaar, this is a good option:

Naguib Mahfouz is Egypt's best-known author. Try reading his Cairo trilogy (novels) for some good background on Cairo.

Alexandria: I'd vote for the Catacombs. The library was underwhelming. But you can ask your guide to at least drive by it, you can get a good view of it.

Have fun!

We went to the Museum 3 weeks ago. It was very very crowded. And hot. No A/C except in the King Tut rooms. It was hard to walk around and see things. I suggest you proceed right upstairs to the King Tut area and then quickly tour a few other rooms. Tut's mask and many treasures are in a small, crowded, air conditions area. You can probably see what you want in 75 minutes or so.

This is very similar to the trip we took with Egyptian Express, except that we did Giza the first afternoon, and then the Museum and Khan el Khalili the second day. I think it is very doable.

Have a GREAT cruise!

Your itinerary looks good but please place yourselves in the hands of your very capable tour guide. Traffic, weather, special events (especially at the museum) may make it necessary to change things around. Just agree with the guide what you want to see and they will provide you with the best order of things. The big advantage of staying at Giza is that you can go to the Sound and Light Show. We really enjoyed the 45 min show after which we went to a dinner on the grounds of the hotel.

webegone,
Which restaurant did you have dinner in at the LeMederian Hotel. Was it reasonable? Thank You.

Your itinerary is similar to the one we've worked out with Moustafa - we're also more interested in experiencing Cairo than spending all our time going from site to site. The only other thing we've included is Al Azhar Park (and we may have an early dinner at the restaurant there - the food and view get high praise on trip advisor) before heading to the bazaar. We're staying at Le Meridian in Giza so we can go to the Sound & Light Show (I think my toddlers will love it) and to enjoy a pyramid view room.

Thanks for posting this, it has given us some ideas to use as well - including maybe eating at the bazaar instead.

Best,
Mia

We ate at the outdoor restaurant by the pool which was excellent and nice to eat outside as well. Friends ate inside on the mezanine and said it was very good as well. They have a Tex-Mex (yes...in Egypt) but we avoided that. Trish
