Just wondering if when we settle up our onboard account, gratuities etc., if it is possible to have part of the payment charged to our credit card and to pay cash (USD) for the remainder? The reason I ask it that we have a fair amount of USD which we like to use up but probably won't be enough to settle the whole account.

Keeping in mind that your credit card will be authorized if you have it registered the whole time, I would recommend this:
Don't register a card with the online check-in and say you'll do cash. Once you board, give the front office the cash and get your receipt for the deposit. Once you run through the cash amount, or are close to it... go down and have them authorize your card. This way you absolutely know there isn't a chance of your amount being run through not reflecting your cash :)

I would expect that you can pay as much as you like in cash and then have the remainder put on your credit card.

That works! It's like setting up an OBC for yourself. ;)

No problem. We do it all the time. We open our account in advance with a credit card but during the cruise I take my casino winnings to the front desk and put that cash towards my bill. But since I hate standing in line on the last night of the cruise, I do it early in the morning the day before. Happy Sailing.

A couple of cruises ago my DW hit a nice little jackpot in the casino, not huge but a few hundred dollars. We only had a couple of days left on the cruise and those were sea days so we decided to take the money and buy down our on-board account, which was set up on a credit card, since we didn't need the cash for getting home and no more ports. Worked great though I think she spent a bit more in the jewelery shop on the ship.

A couple of days before the end of the cruise we get a statement, estimate our spending for the rest of the cruise, and put cash on our account for whatever shortfall we expect. Our end of cruise bill that goes on the credit card is usually around $20.

Exactly what we do. And although the OP didn't ask about this specifically, I'll just add that, as Canucks, we insist that the amount that IS put on our card is put through in USD, not CAD, so we don't get hit with more conversion charges than necessary.
Now, to catl331 (and apologizing in advance for going OT) ... missed connecting with you for the M&G I coordinated on Noordam last Dec. Had no info, couldn't find you, boo hoo ... maybe another cruise. ;)

Yeah ... my DH doesn't like socializing, and we don't join in most M&G. I think we've been to two. Maybe I'll start going without him. :)

I always register a credit card with my online check-in and then pay the balance of my onboard account, (after reviewing the printout), at the completion of the cruise with Traveller's Checks! Never been a problem in all my HAL cruises!

You can swap around how you want to pay your account any way you wish.
Halfway through the cruise we saw that the "charge" for our Hydro Pool pass was on one card and the "refund" (since we pre-paid) was on another. At that time I decided to just swap all of the charges from DW's account onto mine...It was no issue and the Front Desk was happy to accomodate whatever way you want to pay.

So far, I've always lost money in the onboard casino, so can't get cash that way.

Good point about the USD/CAD conversion. Don't get them to convert to your local currency, they give a crappy exchange rate. We used one card as the hold card (had a high limit) but then on the last couple of days we switched it to our regular card and some cash.
