Any idea if Hans Mateboer will be the Noordam's captain on the April 14-24, 2010 cruise?

Not sure...Copper John will answer your question, I'm sure, when they return from their Hawaii cruise on the Zaandam. We've had both Captain Scott and Captain Mateboer on the Noordam. John told me that Captain Mateboer will be at the helm on our upcoming cruise 2/3 and 2/13....so he could well be still on the ship in April.

Maybe I've been misinformed, but I thought that the captains were on three months and off three months....

In Jan 09 Copper/John said this:
As of right now, each of the fourteen dam ships has two captains assigned to them. When one is on his three month contract, the other one is on vacation. Noordam's 'assigned' captains are John Scott and Hans Mateboer. Capt. Mateboer is scheduled to be in command in August
That means Mateboer should be leaving in mid-March, and Scott being on in April.

Just home from the Noordam and Capt. Scott told me he will be aboard on April 4th. We are sailing on that date.

Lucky you, Gayle! ;-)
Captain Scott was at the helm on our first two Noordam cruises...February '07 and February '08. Last year, we had Captain Mateboer. This year, same time, guess he's at the helm again.
Would much prefer Captain Scott, but what can you do

I have been wondering who would be the Noordam's Master on my January 4 cruise. I am glad to learn that Captain Mateboer will be at the helm! This will be my third cruise with him--all, incidently on Noordam. I sailed with Captain Scott on the Veendam in 1998, thus do not know him as well as Captain Hans.

Sheila,
I've sailed with both Captains, and would cheerfully do so again. They are definitely different personalities -- Capt. Scott is gregarious and energetic and Capt. Mateboer is by comparison more subdued, but I found both to be higly intelligent, engaging and enjoyable people that I truly liked to converse with.
Capt. Hans (Johannes) has a sharp dry wit that may not be obvious, but I found my time with him to be as enjoyable as the time spent with Capt. Peter. The key point in my mind is that the crew would follow either wherever they led. I've only sailed once with each, but am looking forward to our cruise in Feb. Like others on this board, I can't really point to one thing that makes Noordam my favorite of the Vistas, but it may very well be the comlementary relationship these two excepional captains have with each other, and with their ship and crew.
See you in about 13 weeks!

Hi,
I have not sailed with Captain Hans Mateboer. BUT I just read his book called "The Captain's Log". It was a great book about his life on board and sea and all the goings on .

Dave,
I agree with you. We had the opportunity to experience both Captains on our recent 20 day Noordam Mediterranean Cruise. Capt Hans Mateboer was just finishing his 3 month during our first 10 days and Captain John Scott just started from Rome during our second 10 days. Both were very accomplished and experienced Captains and we enjoyed hearing aboout their experiences during the Meet the Captain talk. We even met John Scott's wife who was a delightful person. I bought Capt. Mateboer's book and really enjoyed the read. It is a great book full of laughs.
We loved our 3 weeks on the Noordam. The ship was in first class conditon and the crew were fabulous. Can't wait to sail on her again under either Captain.
