I should know the answer to this, but don't. If I need cash on the ship (for ports, etc.) can I write a check to HAL and cash at the front desk?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

You can cash a Traveller's Check, but not a personal check.

BTW - love those San Juans! (Also from CO)

You could also use any ATM on your bank's network - PLUS, Star, Cirrus, etc. Just make sure your PIN code is compatible overseas (ask your bank). Yes, you might pay fees, depending on your banking arrangements, but you might also have to pay a fee to buy those traveller's checks.

We figure those couple of dollars are just part of the cost of cruising & are a whole lot safer than carrying cash. Also, when travelling in a foreign country, local ATMs dispense local currency. HAL will only give you US $$ for your traveller's check. :)

You can also ask for a cash advance on your on board account which attracts a 3% commision, or pull it out in the casino with no commision.

We are very lucky. Our bank does not charge us for Traveler's Checks. That is why I never carry much cash and always use the TC. I do carry enough cash to cover room service tips and any other tips along the way to the airport and hotel.:)

:D:D:DI'm pretty sure that you pay the 3% in the casino for cash too. Otherwise, everybody would go there instead of the front desk. I suppose you could put money into a slot machine, play a little, and then cash out, but that would still cost something. Less than the 3%, I guess.

We also use Traveler's checks. We carry maybe $100-200 in small denominations for tips, small souvenirs, etc. and when we run out we cash traveler's check at the pursers office. It is the safest way to travel.

I always carry Traveler's checks ... and if I don't spend them they can pay down my account at the end.
