I was under the impression that smoking was only allowed in certain lounges, in the casino, and on deck. Is this correct or are pax also allowed to light up in their stateroom?

They are allowed to light up in their cabins and verandahs :) Bring your Ozium if this offends you, but as non-smokers our cabin did not smell at all :) Hope this helps :)

What is an ozium and where can I get one? My husband is very obnoxious about smoke and can smell it from a mile away. I am asthmatic and can't sleep in a smokey room without going into an attack.

Ozium is a brand of air freshener. Comes in a spray can. The cabin steward does a great job of cleaning, and in all our cruises we have never smelled smoke in our cabin (drapes, furniture, etc.)

You might consider taking along one of those air freshners that plug into the wall - they give off a lovely scent.

Walmart sells it.

Not sure if you can bring any aersol cans on airplanes, either as checked or carry-ons. Suggest checking with the airlines to make sure, otherwise, you may just have to dump it....

Sorry I didnt answer sooner. You can buy it at Walmart, we bought and took on the airplaine a small travel size, and it was ok. We didnt need it though until DH left his deposit in the bathroom and then I needed it!!!! :) I swear by that stuff, we smoked in my car for 15 years and when we stopped I sprayed my seats and carpet real good and no more smell! and Yes I had that car 17 years till it bit the big one! :)
This feburary will be 5 years smoke free for us :)

I just returned from a cruise on the Rotterdam and I found the smoke to be a real problrm. It probably depends on which ship you are on, however, the configuration on the Rotterdam allowed smoke just about everywhere except the dining room and the show lounge. All the other lounges have a smoking section and the smoke travels. The semi- enclosed pool deck allowed smoking and cigar smoking which was obnoxious. They do not enforce where people smoke and I found they just picked up the ashtrays and take them where they want to smoke around the pool. One day I was taking an exercise class in the pool and a man wws sitting on the edge of the pool smokiong and causing me in inhale his smoke while I exercised. UGH. Another man got very upset with me when I pointed out he was smoking in a nonsmoking area. Lastly, they allow smoking in a TV area right in the middle of the ship near the shops etc. and this smoke coupled with the smoke from the Casino permeates the area. On the positive side our room had no smoke smell. It is my opinion that H/A is way behind the times with their smoking policy. If you find this to be true please tell them at the end of your cruise when you fill out the rating form. If you are as sensitve to smoke as it sounds you will definitely notice it.

Wow and I thought it was the complete opposite on the Zuiderdam! It sounds like alot of it depends on the type of pax you are crusing with to me :)

I stopped smoking in Jan 2004. Our first cruise after that was April 2004, Rotterdam, Panama Canal. IMO this was a longer cruise, and an older and more monied pax and with that group you may get more smokers. IMO you will find rude smokers in all age brackets, but the younger smokers are more tolerant of compaints/requests than older smokers. They seem to understand they are in the minority not the majority.

I have never had a problem with odor/smell in any stateoom. I don't know what they use, but it works.

I'll admit to reconsidering my HAL cruise. I am thinking that RCCL will have younger cruisers that will be less likely to be smoking. I am afraid that the older crowd on HAL will be more likely to be smokers.

Thanks everyone for the input. I am just hoping that I enjoy my cruise in January and that I am not overwhelmed by smoke.

DW has asthma problem and it was a problem on one HAL cruise, forget which ship, when the stateroom we were assigned had obviously been used by a cigar smoker-and heavily used at that. We were reassigned without a problem but we now carry Fabreze. Is that the same as the Ozium? We have also noticed some heavy smoke issues in the shops near the casinos but most of the time it is not a problem.
