We'll be in St Kitts in December and are considering Royston's 4 hour island tour. Has anyone used this company and what was your experience with them.

We have used him several times during our stays on St Kitts. They all were positive experiences.

My family took an island tour with him and just returned. We visited St Kitts Nov 7th and found Royston to be a very
good choice for us.

He took us all over the island and was very friendly and nice guy. There was 7 of us -- his van is nice but not like
the fancy vans from some tour companies. I would definately use him again.

We toured with Royston on Thursday, October 29th. We had a terrific tour and he is a very good host. He really loves his island home and showed us a lot of interesting places. He took the windows out of his van to help get more air while we toured. We would definitely go with him again, very interesting tour.

St. Kitts Excursion with Royston Island Tours

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I booked a tour of St. Kitts with Royston of Royston Island Tours for my group of 30 clients while at that port of call on the Carnival Victory.

We were met by Royston when we debarked the ship and since it was our last stop after a very busy itinerary of 6 islands in 6 days, the group decided that they would like to go to Cockleshell Beach before touring the island. Royston was more than happy to accommodate our request. The drive to the beach was breathtaking. We drove along the coastline and saw a mongoose, goats, bulls, and stopped to take pictures of the monkeys playing on the road side. We stopped to photograph the gorgeous view of where the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean almost met - separated only by a little strip of land.

We arrived to Cockleshell Beach by 9:00 am and were the first guests to arrive. What a treat to have the entire beach to ourselves for the first hour. It was $10.00 to rent a chair and umbrella. (They do not bargain like other places might do.) What a beautiful beach and the water was wonderfully refreshing. There was an old pig named Wilbur who resided there. As an added bonus, there was also a little piggy that thought he was a dog that stayed at the beach all day....running around visiting everyone, snooping in the beach bags, and cooling off in the water. He knocked one of our sodas over so that he could drink some, but was way too cute to scold. In addition, there was a very nice man roaming about with the cutest little monkeys, Cindy and Sarah. Cindy had adopted Sarah since she had been abandoned by her mom. Both wore tiny diapers and would sit with you for pictures. Of course, a small donation was expected for this, and was well worth it. There was a local man there with a puppy that rode on his back as he swam. It was so cute.

Royston met us at the beach with coolers of beverages - water, local soda, juice, and beer - which we helped ourselves to throughout the day. Our driver served us delicous wraps - our choice of chicken, beef, or fish. They had some sort of seasoned potatoes in them, too. They were delicious.

The beach was clean and the water was so refreshing. Some folks snorkeled and were able to see some gorgeous fish. The water was so clear that we could see fish swimming around our feet as well. We enjoyed the beach so much that it was unanimous that we just stay there for the entire day instead of doing the tour. We will have to do that next trip.

I would strongly recommend booking your excursion with Royston Island Tours. Royston was excellent at keeping in touch and quickly answering any questions that I had. He was very nice to deal with and extremely helpful in helping me set up the excursion.

Did any of you pre-book or just "show up" at the dock ?

You should pre-book with Royston. He runs a small operation & he does not hang around the pier looking for customers.

Hi, we have just returned from a wonderful 12 day cruise out of Baltimore, and I have to say that Royston's tour was one of the highlights of our vacation.

You should prebook as it is a one man operation and he doesn't solicit on the pier for business. We were fortunate to be a complement of six people only, and we really enjoyed the company of our fellow guests who seemed to have as good a time as we did.

Royston went out of his way to make sure we got to see every part of the beautiful island of St. Kitts, and I'm sure we got to see every beauty spot and vista. We have some incredible photos of St. Kitts and we can't wait to return. Our only slight disappointment was that being Sunday, all the best eateries were closed so we didn't get to sample his recommended choices. We did get to snorkel, sightsee and enjoy some great company.

I'm pretty sure I was on the same tour with Ikelmay and totally agree with comments made. Royston's tour was without a doubt the best tour we were on during the five ports we visited. He is very easygoing and accommodating and would highly recommend him.

We used him on our cruise last week and he was so freindly and accomodating. He will do whatever you want. We saw most of the island. Wetoo had the wraps mentioned above- very yummy- made with meat and potatoes and a curry sauce.

All the tour operators/taxi drivers know him at the port. He is 35 and looks 17!:D His van is nothing fancy but he makes up for it in touring.

Enjoy!

We booked Royston and just had 4 of us in his not full of bells and whistles van. We had a fantastic time. We asked and he provided food and beverages for us, took us on a wonderful tour of St. Kitts and then snorkeling. He snorkeled with us and pointed out some interesting sea life for us that we may have missed. We asked and he did without question. We would book with him again.:)

We did an all day island tour with Royston in December. He was wonderful. Such a kind man. We had a fantastic time and would definitely look him up when ever we make it back to his part of the world. He will take you on what ever trip you want. We spent the whole day with him including sunset on a totally empty "locals" beach. His van is very basic, but he is such a wonderful warm person. Best tour ever!

We had booked Royston for our stop in St. Kitts. He met us at the ship and was willing to do whatever we wanted. Unfortunately I had a cold, so we didn't go snorkeling, but he took us all around the island. He even drove off road to show us a beautiful, peaceful overlook. We can highly recommend him!!

We just had Royston's cousin Ashton take us on a tour and it was fabulous. We were with a group of Canadians and we laughed for 5 solid hours. Ashton you were great. We love you.

After reading all the rave reviews here and on TripAdviser, I figured it was time to actually Make A Decision, and try booking him with...but it seems the universe disapproves. His web address now says that the domain name has expired, and I got a delivery failure when trying to email him at roystontours at adventure.com.

Since I'm currently in Australia, I'm not too keen on trying to ring (apart from anything else, he's probably asleep!). Anyone know how to contact him?

I'd highly recommend Javin from Cayon with the Ghaut tour. The most spectacular time of my life. He made our honeymoon so special my wife was in tears. My wife does not get emotional but the rainforest unlike an island tour with Rose, Jim, Thenford or any taxi is serene and peaceful. It was almost like being in the wilds of Alaska except without the risk of dying.

He is inexpensive for what he offers. Safe and Reliable.

My soul was cleansed by the experience and Javin brought joy to our lives.

If you want a life changing experience on St Kitts Javin is the only way to go!!!!

He can be emailed at myislands@aol.com

Looking for some recommendations for a good local tour company that people have experienced first hand and were happy with. We are interested in seeing St. Kitts -- not a beach or snorkle tour.

What is being offered, and can they accommodate 2 adults? We have no problem sharing space with others on the tour. We will be there in early November on the EOS.

Thanks.

Royston will do whatever sort of tour you want. He was definitely one of the most flexible tour guides I have been with.

My recommendation for doing St Kitt's the first time is to see:
Brimstone Hill
Caribelle Batik and Romney Manor
The Black Rocks
The view from Timothy Hill - spectacular in both directions.

Sailed on the NCL Dawn this last December for a Xmas cruise. Arrived in St. Kitts on 12/24. Royston is a very very nice young man, as others point out he definitely loves his island. We email him, setup an all day service, no deposit required. Royston said he would be in a yellow shirt, but we still had to ask some other taxi drivers where to find him. They pointed us to this location, easy to find right off the dock. Find Royston HERE (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=17.293666,-62.722052&num=1&t=h&sll=17.343429,-62.755966&sspn=0.251028,0.444603&ie=UTF8&ll=17.293538,-62.722063&spn=0.003923,0.006947&z=18&iwloc=near).

We had never been to St. Kitts before. So we wanted to see the Fort, beaches, and other areas. Royston serves you lunch and has a cooler on board full of Carib st kitts local beer, water and local fruit sodas all complimentary. We stopped a local shop on the way out to pick up some roti, since we had just had a breakfast we passed and asked Royston to pick us up some food later. Timing wasn't right. The island is still very unspoiled and not heavily heavily developed. If you want and like doing the off path nature thing ask Royston to take you to his secluded spot near the forest. He will drive through the sugar cane fields, engine off, and coast down the mountain side. Very unique if you ask me. Admission was paid for by Royston for all tourist spots we his Batik, the fort, etc. $125 + tip wasn't bad for the entire day of him being our personal tour guide. 10am to 4:50p, just got back to the ship with hardly any time to spare..but we made it :)

I will warn you. But at the end of the trip it didn't bother me, as Royston is a very nice person. His van is no windows, no A/C, open air style. From what I understand St Kitts does get a little hot, but is fairly steady on temps. We did go in December and it was humid, but not to hot (80) so as long as we were out of the sun and had a breeze we were good. But if you want a nice air conditioned experience you might want to look elsewhere. He is just starting out, bought his own vehicle to do tours, and is trying to start his own tour business (since we all know tourism is the main industry). What the van lacks Royston makes up for. He's not the most talkative. If you want a driver who's always talking like a recorded tour you might be disappointed.

Hope this helps you and others.

BTW..the Carib beer is actually really good. Especially when ICE cold :D

Royston will tell you where to meet him. In our case, he told us just on the OTHER side of the big open sided port building that has Port Zante written on it and has a dome on top (STRAIGHT ahead from the dock). You just walk through to the square and look for his yellow shirt. In spite of there being lots of people, we had no problem finding him.

We recently returned from a back-to-back cruise on Celebrity Summit, and our day with Royston was the highlight of the two weeks. We would suggest that if you are a photographer or someone who wants to get off the beaten path, that Royston will show you places where other tour operators do not go. Here's how it went down:

A couple on our CC Roll Call forum posted that they had booked Royston for a 4-hour tour, and wanted to know if if anyone else would like to share the day and lower the per-person cost. They had been to St. Kitts a number of times, and had asked Royston to take them to some places they might not have been to before. In the end, six more of us "signed up", bring the cost for eight of us down to $25 pp.

We were to meet Royston at the end of the cruise pier at 8:30. Royston was a few minutes late because of a flat tire, but once he arrived, we were on the road right away.

Royston has removed the windows from his van, which is great for photographers! (He can replace them if it starts raining.)

http://tansleychurch.com/twits/images/pics/Cruise%20851b.jpg
(Royston's van)

He also carries a cooler of water, soda and the local beer called Carib lager.

Since we hadn't given Royston any specifics other than a stop at a beach sometime during the day, he took us on his own itinerary. It all started fairly typically--a drive out of Basseterre and along the Caribbean coast. Royston proved to be well-spoken as he described what we were seeing, and he was well-versed in St. Kitts history, culture and flora. He also knew when to stop for us photographer-types, and always waited until he heard no more shutter clicks before he continued.
http://tansleychurch.com/twits/images/pics/Cruise%20718b.jpg
(Caribbean coast of St. Kitts. The large hill is the location of Fort Brimstone, a UNESCO World Heritage site.)

He took us up to Romney Manor, an old sugar cane operation and home of a modern batik operation, where he drove around and told us about how the plantation had operated and how it had produced sugar, molasses and rum. Then it was back down to the coast road, where we passed by his house and learned the names of his dogs (which I won't repeat here lest this post gets removed.) Next stop was Fort Brimstone, the old British fort.

Then Royston went "off-road". He wanted to show us the northern sweep of the island, where the Atlantic met the Caribbean, so he headed up to slopes of the dormant volcano Mount Liamuiga along a dirt path. We did get stuck at one point and had to pile out while he got unstuck,
http://tansleychurch.com/twits/images/pics/stuck.jpg
(We're stuck--just for a few minutes, as it turned out.)

but Royston was right about the location--the view was beautiful.
http://tansleychurch.com/twits/images/pics/Cruise%20941b.jpg
(The northern tip of St. Kitts: Caribbean to the left, Atlantic to the right, the island of Sint Eustatius is in the distance.)

Back in the van, Royston took us on a few more of his "secret trails" to get down to the main road that runs along the Atlantic coast.
http://tansleychurch.com/twits/images/pics/Cruise%20985b.jpg
(Off-road again.)

At this point, Royston drove us down to a beach with fishing boats, but instead of stopping at the end of the road, he rolled right down onto the sand, then drove along the beach, one wheel in the water, carefully rolling over the mooring lines of the boats. Then back on to the road for a run down the Atlantic coast to the Black Rocks. Then back into Basseterre just long enough to pick up our lunch. (He had phoned in an order of roti.) Then back out on the road, this time to the south, to a small beach Royston knew about. But before we got there, he took us up a small road. A very narrow, very HIGH road. Great views of the south end of the island, and the adrenaline rush was probably good for us.
http://tansleychurch.com/twits/images/pics/high.jpg
(South end of the island: Atlantic to the left, Caribbean to the right, the cloud-capped peak of Nevis in the distance.)

We spent about 45 minutes on the beach, eating roti, swimming and snorkelling. We would have spent longer there, but someone made a request to see Cockleshell Beach, so Royston ran us down to the very southern tip of the island. Someone else made a request for a grocery store, so Royston drove us to one on the outskirts of town before we headed back to the cruise dock.

All in all, it was a very memorable day. For a very reasonably priced tour that took us to some very stunning vistas, we would highly recommend Royston.

If Royston is not available ask if his cousin Ashton is. We had a great day with him in January. Another couple and their friends had booked Royston so when I emailed him he told Ashton was available so we jumped on it. What a great day, he was so fun to be around and he to loves his his island.
Ashton's van is also air conditioned.
Dont forget to try the local beer he has in the van, its great ice cold!

Just got back ~ We had been to St Kitts twice before so opted to do The Fan-Ta-Sea (AWESOME) My friends chose Royston after reading such rave reviews....

THEY HAD TO WAIT 1 HOUR to start their excursion as only one other couple had booked on it and they e-mailed him the day before saying they didn't want to get up that early and could he make it an hour later!

He asked if they wanted to drive around a bit, which they did but ended up driving around much of the same when the other couple showed up ... The other couple wanted to head back for shopping and my friends had arranged when they booked to go to Cockelshell Beach .. Because of the other couple and leaving late he dropped them off at a beach a lot closer before heading back to town to drop off the other couple... They felt vulnerable and they were the only people on this beach and didn't feel safe leaving their belongings on the beach while they went for a swim..

MAKE SURE HE UNDERSTANDS YOU WILL NOT TOLLERATE THIS !!

I felt so bad for my friends as we had a awesome day on the FAN TA SEA..

How utterly selfish of the other couple and Royston should have said NO show up at the agreed time as I can't contact the others and change arrangements

I contacted Royston hoping he was available to take us on a tour but unfortunatley he has a volcano hike tour already booked for the day we will be there. He did mention his Cousin Ashton is available but it will just be my husband and I. He asked if i could find more people but i may not be able to. For those that have been to ST Kitts before, do you think its better to just find a taxi or tour guide on the pier once we get there? Im assuming that there will be plenty of Taxi's or other Tours going on... Please let me know what you think.

Yes its quite easy you just walk to the taxi station there are posted prices for everything. Make sure you do your research so you know where you want to go. The main places i think are Caribelle batik, brimstone hill fortress, the lava rocks, timothy hill, maybe a stop at south friars beach. Maybe try your roll call and see if anyone wants to join you guys? I have a review of st. kitts in my signature.

How utterly selfish of the other couple and Royston should have said NO show up at the agreed time as I can't contact the others and change arrangements

This is why we always get a "private" tour - just for OUR group (even if OUR group only consists of the three of us). No conflicts over scheduling, no waiting and we get the tour we want. But yes that means it will cost a bit more. To me getting the tour we want is worth the extra money. When you agree to share - you get a cheaper price and most times it works out fine but sometimes with a shared tour you can find yourself in a situation like this.

Whats a good price for the 2 of us?

Im pretty sure the price posted was 20$ per person for an island tour. Our island tour with Royston was 30$ and he gave us lunch, admission to the fortress and drinks. I dont know what would be included on a 20$ island tour. Needless to say i gave Royston 50$ because he went over and above our expectations.

We have just returned from a cruise where we took a tour with Royston at St Kitts. He took us in his 'open air' van (our choice rather than an air conditioned van) and gave us a lovely tour of the island, ending up at South Friars beach which was very quiet and peaceful. We found him to be very friendly and informative and he took great care of our elderly father, collecting beach umbrellas from his home and providing a chair for our father at the beach. We really enjoyed his company on a great trip.

We just returned from our cruise and our day on St. Kitts with Royston was the highlight of our trip! What a warm and wonderful person! This day was magic--we saw so much and from so many different vantage points--Royston will drive his van anywhere and everywhere! It was just so fun and we highly recommend him.

After reading the good reviews on cruise critic I decided to book a tour with Royston. There were six of us and he met us at the pier and took us around in his windowless van. He gave us a wonderful time and it was the best day of our holiday.

We visited the fort, the gardens, a disused sugar planatation and much more. We could stay as long as we wished and Royston kept the liquid refreshments going. He took us off the road and we bumped about seeing places on the island that cruise passengers don't usually see.

The view points were breathtaking especially where the Carribean meets the Atlantic. We ended up on the beach. We were out all day long. His charges were very, very reasonable.

Royston is friendly, knowlegable and a very amiable young man. He goes out of his way to give you a really enjoyable day.

Thanks for the recommendation from cruise critc and if you read this and do book him you are in for a real treat.

My girlfriend and I were in St. Kitts on the Carnival Victory this past Friday (May 6/2011), and we booked a full-day tour with Royston a few days in advance of our arrival.

In summary, Royston's tour is fantastic. Highly recommended if you are looking for a more adventurous and exciting tour of St Kitts. Royston is knowledgeable and friendly; he's more than happy to customize his tour based on your needs/desires. Although his van is a bit dodgy, it only adds to the fun! We got to see the entire island in less than 8 hours, and the price was very reasonable (especially when you consider lunch and admission fees to the fort are included).

A few pictures from our day with Royston... my apologies for the load times, they're a bit big!

I emailed Royston on Sunday about his availablity for our November cruise and I still haven't heard back. Is it typical for him to take this long to respond? I'm used to private tour operators getting back to me within a day of two.

Joy, I emailed Royston on Wednesday and haven't heard back yet. Please let us know when you do hear back and I will do the same. I did hear from another friend that used him last year and really said she had a good time.

Sometimes it takes Royston a few days up to a week to respond back. He does not have internet access at his home. So be patient and wait about a week. If you don't hear from him, send him another inquiry. He IS worth the wait. Once you are on-board w/him, his answers will come quicker.:p

We went with Royston last December and had a great time considering it was raining and cold.

We liked him so much we are trying to book him for my in-laws to do the island tour while we go to the beach. ;)
