I really don't think you should have a problem, but I would go asap to the Shore Excusion desk and book what you want. Obviously, some excursions are more popular than others so it depends what you want to do.

Shore Excursions cannot be booked through Ship's Services and as you are too late to book on-line, you will have to book on the ship. There will be a form in your cabin when you arrive, fill it out and take it to the Shorex desk as soon as you can. They usually have a box outside the office if they are closed.
If HMC is your first stop, you may have a problem booking, but check to see what hours the Shorex office is open and speak to them.

What about all the people that seem to be able to book the HMC cabanas months ahead through ship's services before shorex is open online 60 days before your cruise?

You have a point there.
We have all been reading about people booking cabanas through ship services months in advance.
So maybe oceanlov1 should call ship services and see what they can do for them. It never hurts to try.

People like me read "the rules" and assume they apply to everyone, including me.
We keep doing this despite life's many lessons that there are those for whom the rules apply, and then there are others.
I suppose it never hurts to see what you can do. Maybe you're special.

There was a recent transition from booking cabanas through Ship's Services (where it was done before) to now booking them through the Shore Excursion Desk. We booked our cabana when it was still done through Ship's Services and not considered a Shore Excursion. There was no "rule" about it one way or another. You could book them whenever you wanted and we booked our November cabana in June.
HAL then decided to transfer this responsibility over to the Shore Excursions Desk. So now I don't know if you can still book in advance of other shore excursions. I think a call to Ship's Services with that question would be in order.
I don't think it's a matter of breaking any "rules" ... you'll either be allowed to book in advance or not. End of story.
