In your opinion what is the best excursion to take in Costa Rica, and why?

I liked going to where they make those coloured carts. I seen the artist painting them. I got to talk to one for a few minutes. The church was nice too.
P.S. If you are into eco tours take one here.

We took the Tortuguero Canal tour - loved it.
Assume you are talking about Puerto Limon on the Caribbean side.

The Tortuguero Canal excursion is a terrific day and I have never seen one post on here where anyone taking it has not said the same thing. We would do it again next time we are in CR.

LOL ... you won't like my opinion, but here goes anyway.
Costa Rica Bungee.
Had a blast with them last March, jumping off a 265 foot bridge. Video is awesome too ... especially the part where the ankle harnesses snapped off and my brand new sneakers went flying down to the bottom of the ravine. Oh, well ... thank God I always wear "Bo Bo's." :)
Of course, you won't find that particular excursion listed anywhere on the cruise line's offerings. Ya kinda gotta do that one on your own. :)

We did that tour the first time we were in Costa Rica - town where they paint the carts is Sarchi. We enjoyed the tour and had a great day.

Thanks for opinions, but what exactly is good about the Tortuguero Canal tour? Do you see lots of wildlife? Flowers? What?
BUNGEE JUMPING! Yokes, I can see where some people might enjoy this near death experience, just NOT me! I get nervous about heights looking down from a suite~!

Tortuguero Canal
You take an small covered craft on a tour of the backwaters of the marshes. The morning tour is better to see the wildlife because they have not settled down for the warm part of the day. A short bus trip takes you to the open air boats. You slowly tour the canals and see alligators, birds, reptiles and small native houses that line the canals. You follow the canals to the Caribbean sea and then loop back into the marshlands. It is interesting to watch the Caribbean flow into the canal as you make a left turn to continue your trip up the canal. Birds abound and tropical plants line the canals. You end at a rest stop where you are given fresh fruit and drinks to eat. Local vendors have set up booths that allow you to buy crafts.

Thanks for an excellent description! Have you ever done any different excursions while there?

LOL ... well, sometimes it's fun to scare the crap out of yourself every once in a while. :)
Seriously, I did this on a whim while "stuck" in Costa Rica for a few days waiting to catch up to the Rotterdam (which I missed in Fort Lauderdale). I was formerly a skydiver and had done some "watered down" bungee jumps at the Jersey shore several years ago. I figured doing a "real" one ... tied up by the ankles, long drop, etc. ... would be a unique experience.
Never so scared in my life ... especially after the ankle harnesses gave way on the first bounce (you have a secondary harness around the waist).
I'm glad I did it ... but seriously, NEVER again. :)
Skydiving is a thousand times easier than taking that first step off the bridge was.

Thanks for the honesty and the laughs! I would love to WATCH someone else do this, but NEVER do it! My parents told me about watching people do this in New Zealand and it does sound WILD!

ANY canal tour will be one of the best experiences you will have in Costa Rica. The only other thing we did was aboard ship the day before. We bought 20 bags of Britt coffee for $99. It was at our home before we got home and after brewing, it's so good. I sound like a commerical but we love our coffee. I went to the company site and they don't offer this special, only aboard the Rotterdam.

Rain Forest trip for us was great...it is an all day adventure...but the tour guides were so knowledgeable and we saw lots and lots of local scenary on the way there.
Would do this again...and the canals...everyone seems to enjoy them.

Do be prepared for wet weather for any of the tours you might take in Puerto Limon! The day we were at the Tortuguera Canals it poured the entire time. Although it "dampened" our experience a bit, it was much drier than those who chose to do the aerial tram! We did see sloths briefly, a group of holler (sp?)monkeys and many spectacular birds, in addition to interesting vegetation.
Turtles return to the Canals to nest in March through October, so don't expect to see them if you are not travelling in those months. Hope this helps!

We spent a year in Costa Rica and the Tortugero Canals was most amazing trip we took. Saw Sloths - one even fell in the canal and was rescued by one of our guides. He picked it out of the water and let us touch it. We saw and heard many monkeys, and when our boat broke down we landed near a boa constrictor resting on a large plant near the canal. We were rescued by a local fisherman and towed back to our hotel. The canals were full of baby tarpon leaping out of the water. We only saw one coti mundi on the aerial tram but did see a man sleeping in his tram car. For the most part February is the dry season in Costa Rica and it doesn't rain until May in most areas. Limon leaves nothing to be desired. Have a great time there - it is our favorite place!

One of the days prior to docking at c.r. they will have a coffee tasting demonstration on board. there they will have fliers you can use to check off twenty of their many coffees or candys. wish i had ordered two twenty packs, they sure make nice gifts.

We have been there twice and once we did the white water rafting which was fabulous and I would highly recommend. Then on our second visit we did the zip lining and there you are in the trees with the Monkeys and the Slouths. There is a lot of information regarding Costa Rica on the Ports Board...
