As mentioned in another thread, I'm not planning on spending the whole day there or sunbathing, so I don't need a beach bag per se. What I'd really like to find is some kind of nylon mini-backpack to hold my camera, foldable hat, sunglasses and the like. Does anyone know who might carry something like this? I would really like to be unencumbered by a purse that day, but I don't know if a fanny pack will do the trick or not. Thanks!

Go to the web sites of the outdoor outfitters (Cabella's, Bass Pro, etc) and look for nylon mesh shoulder strapped back packs. You'll find single sling or double slings in different sizes and colors.

Also try travelsmith.com and Magellans.com websites. These companies have excellent travel items.

I'm a fan of Maxpedition gear, if you don't mind the industrial look. They are extremely comfortable to wear, have different sizes (one should fit what you want to bring) and DW likes that I don't mind carrying everything so she can leave her purse at home.
Google "Versipack" for a look at some designs. And no, you don't have to carry a gun in them if you don't want to! :-)

I like baggalini bags. They are lightweight, comfortable and can fit a ton of stuff. I have the messenger bag but I am considering one of the totes just for around town type stuff.

I love my sling bag. it's a type of double draw string bag that packs flat. It's quite simple but will carry a lot of stuff if needed. Can be used as a backpack or it can be slung over a shoulder. I used it for 3 days with the grandkids in Disneyland. The thin straps got uncomfortable after the long days of marching around but it's great for shorter days. Very lightweight nylon and mine has a rubberized panel to protect it when setting it down on the ground. Hope you find something that fits your needs :)

I own five Chico bags, of different configurations. I like the light weight and the fact that they are washable. They are also very durable. I've overstuffed and overweighted a few of them and they handled it.

I own several of the Lonchamp 'LePiliage' range of bags, they fold up for packing, lightweight & extremely durable.

You can also try Sportsac. Available in most department stores and a little less expensive than Longchamps.

Mine can be one shoulder, cross body, or backpack. Lots of zippered compartments to hold/organize stuff and it holds a ton! I just dump it out and repack for wherever I'm going ... suit, extra shirt, camera, Kindle, whatever ... it goes in and has its own section. As I said, I love my Baggallini!:D

There are four REI stores in the Chicago area. Drive to the most convenient one, and check out the backpacks. I'm thinking one of the smaller ones will fill your needs.

The Butler Package.:D:D
Nice idea, but I don't think the Butler Package works all that well without a cabana! :D
Boytjie, your picture is EXACTLY along the lines of what I had in mind. Thanks (and thanks to everyone else who responded).
