Hello Folks!
Just returned from the HAL Ryndam Sea-of-Cortez Cruise Dec4-11, 2004. Great Cruise (a little "choppy" coming back though!).

We noticed coming into the port of Loreto, there were a "string" of about 120+ lights on shore, in a near perfect row, from north to south along the coast.

Anyone know what/why these lights are there? They seemed to turn "off" in sections the nearer we came to port. Really intersting...!

Thanks for the response...!

Hi There!

I was on the same cruise as you and we were also watching this from the rail. We were definitely wondering the same thing - looked almost as though it were a long highway or something. I'll let you know if I am able to find out!

Hey Steve!

Sorry we missed you... we were part of the poker crusie and were "busy" playing Hold 'Em...

I tried to find a Navigation Officer to ask, but they keep themselves "hidden"..

I'll let you know what I find out...

Hey, are there any Navigation Officers on this Board?

Can you answer the mystery of the shore lights??

I've received information about the sailaway that evening but I'm not sure just how exact it is in explaining the lights. I did some of my own research as well to find that we passed "Isla Carmen" and that sometimes there are many fishing boats out on the water that keep a light on when fishing for squid. The information that I received is that after sailing five to six miles, we passed Isla Carmen on our starboard side. The island is not inhabited, however.

I know that it still sounds vague but it's a bit more information. I do recall seeing the exact sequence of lights to which you are referring.

Hello ShipCafe!

I have tried "in vain" in searching the 'net to find out what these lights just south of Loreto on the Mainland were.
We counted around 120 evenly spaced, all at the same height, I'd say about 15-20 feet up from ground level, running from North to South.
I did call the front desk the next day about the purpose of the lights. They called us back and they said it was to light up the Ryndam and make it more beautiful!!!??? LOL!! http://boards.cruisecritic.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I thought someone on the bridge is having a good laugh about that one!!

My quest continues...!
