Just getting some information that St. Thomas has experienced an earthquake and there is some damage to the airport. Anyone know if the cruise port has suffered any damage?

Don't know the answer to that, but here's a link to the story: St. Thomas Source (http://www.onepaper.com/stthomasvi/?v=d&i=&s=News:Local&p=1105679774)

Thank heavens it wasn't bad and didn't really affect the airport or Charlotte Amalie.

HMM

Just a couple of weeks ago an earthquake hit Dominica. And it wasn't below the surface.

Wonder what is happening in the Caribean??

Wow. Thank you for sharing! I'm not a weather person, so please forgive my ignorance, but earthquakes in St Thomas had never crossed my mind! Thank you for sharing the article.

My sister recently moved to St. John...she called last night and said their house (just finished being built 3 months ago!) shook pretty bad for about a minute. Guess it was pretty scary for a bit; luckily no damage except for nerves being rattled!!

Holy Cow!

A 6.7 is something that will get your attention. Just ask my DH who lived within 3 miles of the Northridge epicenter!!!!

They are just recovering from the Hurricanes, the disaster gods sure are fickle.:o

Strong quake hits Cayman Islands, no damage seen
Tue Dec 14, 2004 08:33 PM ET
GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands, Dec 14 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck the Cayman Islands on Tuesday but did not appear to have caused serious damage, the U.S. Geological Survey and local residents said.

The earthquake was centered about 20 miles (35 km) south-southeast of George Town, the capital of the Caribbean offshore finance center that was pounded by Hurricane Ivan in September.

Pictures fell from walls, store shelves rattled and swimming pools cracked when the earthquake struck at 6:20 p.m. local time (6:20 p.m. EST/2320 GMT), residents said, but there was no early sign of major damage to buildings in the British territory.

U.S. Geological Survey spokeswoman Kathleen Gohn said the service had heard some early reports of damage but gave no details.

She said the last comparable earthquake of this magnitude in the area struck in 1900. The Cayman Islands did suffer a smaller magnitude 6 earthquake on Sept. 9, just days before Ivan slammed over the island nation and caused damage estimated at nearly twice its annual economic output. A United Nations agency said this month the hurricane damage amounted to $75,700 per resident.

I also read about the earthquake on Grand Cayman in this morning's paper.

Glad it was closer to the reef than the Georgetown.
