Specifically: Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand

I have searched here and done other research including looking at the relevant countries' Embassy/High Commission sites but still don't feel comfortable that I've got answers.

I get the impression that for Australian nationals Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand don't need a visa for tourist entry but Indonesia looks like it does. The Costa site lists China and India as countries for which visa's can't be arranged on board, which might imply Costa will look after the necessary formalitites in other countries ports.

I was hoping that members who've done it might be able to readily clear this up.

Have you tried the following website: http://www.dfat.gov.au/visas/?
I'm an American but came across this website while using your govenments Traveler Advisory website (http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/index.html) which is highly recommended for everyone traveling.

You might also check Lonely Planet guides to the country they usually list visa requirements in them.

I hope you enjoy SE Asia. We are booked for June and go to the same places ex. Indonesia.
TA's usually let you know if you need visas. I'm pleased we don't need them.
All the best,
Anna

Thanks, but tried that. Links to embassies didn't work and is was from the individual embassies that I got the info above.

Thanks. TA didn't mention anything to my wife when she booked or at subsequent contacts when we've enquired about arrival of tickets, etc. She pointed out the the invoice states "visa's are the responsibility of the client" (good on you, Flight Centre :().

Thus the question for anybody whose done this trip (or similar) and can tell us what they did / how it worked.

Thailand:- Re Australian Passport holders only:p

As a passport holder of this country, you are not required to obtain a visa when entering Thailand for tourism purposes only and will be allowed to stay in Thailand for a period of not exceeding 30 days on each visit.
However, if you enter Thailand overland at an immigration checkpoint which borders Thailand’s neighboring countries i.e. Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Myanmar; you will be allowed to stay for a period of not exceeding 15 days on each visit.
Please note that Tourist Visa Exemption does not apply to Travel Document holders. If you intend to stay in Thailand longer than 30 days, please apply for a Tourist Visa (TR).

Malaysia:D

Australian passport holders do not need a visa to enter Malaysia for a visit of up to three months provided their passports are valid for at least six months on arrival and they have a return air ticket or onward ticket to another international destination. A single entry air ticket is not accepted without a confirmed date and exit from Malaysia.

BUT as far as Indonesia goes please check this web site,

http://www.kbri-canberra.org.au/consular.html

for visa on arrival information. I have not been to Indonesia and dont have any experiance with them regarding their system. Maybe someone else can help there.

Good luck on your holiday you will enjoy 3 of the 4 destinations I can assure you. Be careful with dutyable goods between Malaysia and Singapore.:)

you absolutely need to arrange for the china visa ahead of time.

i met a group of aussies on my recent cruise who did not. they were arrested at the shanghai airport. at their own cost, they had to fly to hong kong to get their china visa. they told me it cost them $700 a piece extra.

why qantas let them board the plane is still a mystery.

Baby Cruiser 60 - wow, thanks! Well above and beyond the call.

From the consular link it seems that Indonesia's 'Visa on Arrival' arrangement is available at our first call (per our TA's documents), the seaport of Soekarno-Hatta in Makassar/Ujung Pandang (or if the port order is per Costa's site - Tanjung Priok in Jakarta) for $US10 for 7 days.

Still keen to hear from anybody whose done it recently ;)

Baby Cruiser 60 seems to have covered most bases correctly. We have recently returned from a cruise Singapore/Thailand/Malaysia/Singapore. We did not need visas. Try "googling" Indonesian Embassy. Our travel agent's information was also "visas are the responsibility of the person travelling".

One point to note - on SuperStar Cruise line - they actually take your passport off you until the last day of the cruise. Pretty scary experience, as we have been always been taught - "Never go anywhere without your passport"!

Hi Strathnaver
I finally received a reply from my TA today and yes we do need visa's for Indonesia. She rang Costa and they said that we can purchase them onboard.

We did South America for 49 nights earlier this year and our passports were forever being handed backwards and forwards for the authorities to check. They need to check everyone's passport and stamp it, and it would take forever for 3000 people on a ship to line up, so they do it that way for everyone's convenience. I would hate to think what would happen if they 'misplaced' your passport.
