I have sailed on the Zaandam, the Volendam and the Nieuw Amsterdam, how is the Rotterdam more formal?

I have sailed on both the Rotterdam and Volendam, I didn't find the Rotterdam any more formal than the Volendam, as a matter of fact, I found the Rotterdam to be a bit less formal.

I think it depends on the itinerary. The Rotterdam NE/Canada was less formal than the transatlantics we've been on, however when you're on a ship for 34 days, most everyone tends to let their hair down. By the end of last summer's trip everyone seemed to mellow out, except for a few who got crankier.
We'll be on the Zaandam for 11 days over New Year's so we'll see how the tone of the 2 ships compare, but then, it's a holiday cruise so we'll be dressed to the 9's.
I really think the length of the cruise and the itinerary set the tone of the cruise as the demographics are different on longer and more expensive trips.
Just my opinion, tho,

We did a 16 day Orinoco Cruise on the Rotterdam in 2003 - people really dressed up on that cruise.
I agree that itinerary plays a part in how people dress ona cruise for the most part.
