My other half moved from the hotel into the ship today, and tonight will be his first night of staying there rather than having to get the shuttle bus backwards and forwards to the hotel.

Doesn't mean it's finished, obviously, but it does mean that the major structural stuff is now done and it's ok for people to stay on it.

Now starts the 18 hour days for him to get the rest of the 'stuff' finished in time for the 16th!

As I say, not much but thought some may be interested in a little bit of info! :)

Thanks for the update.
Can you share what it is your 'other half' does on the ship? Not specifically, of course, but is he hotel or navigation?

He's an electrician by trade, but he's mainly been doing work in the show lounge for this one. Not sure of detail other than that though, so whether he's been putting up new lights for example, or re-wiring stuff, I'm not sure.

He's also been doing some welding too as he can do that very well from working on numerous cars when he used to do racing!

Hope that helps :)

Thanks, Aim. This is probably a very interesting experience for him. :)

Thanks Aim1 for the updates on the refitting of the ROTTERDAM. We will be embarking on her on January 4th for a 33 day cruise. Can't wait to see the ship!!!!

. . . for letting us know how hard everyone works so the ships can be updated and ready for us to enjoy our wonderful HAL cruises. I have no idea how hard people work until I read some of these amazing (to me) reports.

The updates are very much appreciated!

Thanks so much for the updates! Like "love cruises", I get on her Jan, 4 and can hardly wait! I was last on her January 2008 to the Antarctic and S/A. I am looking forward to seeing her all "gussied up" again! Kathi

Will there still be work done while she's going through the Panama Canal on the way to San Diego?

No, not that I know of. He is sailing back with the ship to Fort Lauderdale and there will be work going on then, and possibly a few bits and bobs to load on once it docks, but he'll be coming home then, so I'm guessing the rest of the workers will be too.

To Sail7seas, I don't know if I would say he finds it interesting as such, he just sees it as work. I have been on cruises in the past so I think I find it more interesting then he does!! :o

His first job was last year for 6 weeks on the Carnival Destiny and Carnival Triumph, redoing the PA system and installing the big tv on deck. He went over for a couple of weeks in September this year to work on the Carnival Ecstasy, then a couple of weeks on the Coral Princess (think he did something to do with the sound system in the theatre on that one), and now this time on the Rotterdam. He has more lined up in the new year, pretty much every month until July, including another two Holland America ships.

I find it quite hard as I obviously miss him lots, but then I think of other workers on the ships who don't see their families for 6 months or more, so really I can't grumble. I'm glad that he will be home at Christmas though! :o

Sorry, I've probably waffled on a lot now!
