Are you able to use these for your $10 a day tips or is that considered to be an extra?

I used my shipboard credit to pay for part of my $10.00 tips on my last two cruises. (Statendam 14Jul04 and Statendam 15Oct04)

The credit can be used for any expense charged to your shipboard account ... including the auto-tip.

So far HAL is letting everyone who has shipboard credit use it towards the auto tip. Hope they don't change this rule.

Our our last cruise we received a list of shipboard expenses. It included all expenses while on the ship. They also had the shipboard credit listed. They don't differentiate what expense it is crediting, it just comes off the bottom line.

Can you tell me how, or where you obtained your HAL american shipboard credits? I'm cruising the Oosterdam Feb. 12 to Mexico and wanted to make sure I take advantage of any credits that are available to us. Thank you.

Are there currently any shipboard credits being offered? DH and I leave on our Ryndam Jan. 29th Panama Canal cruise in three weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There was no credit with our documents. If there are any current credits, I would sure like to know about them and whether it is too late to obtain them. Thanks!!!

Credits are usually promotionally provided. So you must book under the promo code to get the credits offered. Also, credits are given to a future booking when it's booked onboard while on a cruise. I don't know of any other way to get credits, but I'm sure there are a few others, that someone else can provide. The credits are reflected in a voucher that comes with your cruise tickets. The voucher must be taken to the purser's desk at the beginning of your cruise so the credit can be applied to your shipboard account. As stated previously, it comes off the total of your shipboard charges for the cruise. So the credit can be applied to anything that is charged to your shipboard account.

Our shipboard credits were not with our docs, but I had obtained a copy from my TA, and took that to the front desk to make sure we had been credited. Took them some time to find it, but eventually they did.
Also, TA had told me that she had given us a gift for dinner in the Pinnacle Grille. The "gift card" was not in our cabin, so back down to the front desk (long way from our cabin at the stern of the Westerdam) to check and make sure they had the credit listed. Yes, it was there, but they didn't give us anything to prove that we had the "gift". When we went to the Pinnacle for dinner, the Maitre'd asked if all 3 dinners should be charged to one account and we told him it was from our TA. Upon checking, he found it in the system. He said we should have been given a gift card. Somebody really screwed up in the front office.
Oh, forgot, we received flowers from a friend and I had to sign THREE times to say that we had received them....talk about a screw up.
So, if you have any shipboard credits due to you, make sure your TA gives you a copy confirming this.

Betty,
Ask about Promo # 267. It is for a $50.00 pp credit for SS & S Suites of up to a 3 category upgrade for Veranda cabins. Never hurts to try. Good Luck! Chef Nancy:)

I'm confused about the shipboard credit thing... Is it something HAL offers only to those booking thru HAL or is it something that repeat ( mariner society ) pax can get by asking regardless of the TA? We are in and "S" suite and were on our last cruise as well.
On our last cruise on HAL my brother-in-law got a credit for paying with amex gold card although he booked using Costco as the TA.
We used Costco and the gold card for our upcoming 2/26 cruise and got zip !
thanks

There is a credit for using AMEX Platinum, but haven`t heard of one for a gold card. HAL occasionally puts out promo numbers that have credits, ask your TA to find out if there are any promos on your sailing date.....jean

The only credits I will probably be getting is a $20 one for paying too much for an excursion on HMC prior to the prices coming down.

We are receiving $1200 in onboard credits for two cabins we have booked next month on HAL. By using the AMEX Platinum card we get $300 per cabin credit, champagne, and dinner in Pinnacle. Our TA, who got us a rock bottom price, is affiliated with a national travel group and they are giving us an additional $300 per cabin in lieu of a one day shore excursion. Our investment this year of $395 in the Amex Card will return more than $2,000.

As I stated previously, most HAL credits are promotionally driven. They can be offered by HAL, a credit card company, TA, etc. If it's a HAL promotion, it has a timeframe (i.e. book by feb 28 and you will get $100pp shipboard credit) and linked to certain sailings. All the TAs get the advertisement of the promotion and should offer it to you if your booking meets the promotional terms. The best way to be advised of the HAL specials directly is to get on their email or regular mail list. Once the terms of the shipboard credit has expired, you cannot get the credit retro applied. Meaning, if you learn of a promo that applied to your sailing next week, you can't call HAL or your TA to get it applied. If you book under a HAL promo, your booking confirmation should reflect the shipboard credit. When your tickets arrive, a shipboard credit voucher should be a page in the book, towards the back. If the voucher is not there, immediately contact your TA or HAL and find out why. You can't assume that if you booked under a shipboard credit promo, that you have the credit, even if the voucher is missing. On our last cruise, we met a couple that was told by their TA that the front desk was aware of their shipboard credit and they just had to go to the pursers desk when boarding to 'activate' it. Of course, the front desk didn't know a thing about it and by the time it was all straightened out, the cruise was over. You can't take the credit with you, so they were extremely disappointed over the loss of the credit.

On our rerouted & shortened cruise this past September all passengers were given generous shipboard credits for the inconvienience. Some folks were using them for casino chips then cashing the chips out for the cash. (I used mine for an upgrade, used the rest for gambling and made out like a bandit!):D I left the auto tip in place & tipped above and beyond that as well. Chef Nancy

WAYYY to go, Chef Nancy. But I suppose there was a loss involved in order to get such a generous credit from HAL. Happy Sailing!
