View Full Version : Westerdam Christmas Cruise Review - Long

Dec 20-27, 2009

This was our first cruise with HAL. We decided to try HAL based on the itinerary, price and good reviews. The crowd was younger than I expect most HAL cruises due to the holidays. I heard we had 350 kids (1-18) on board. Overall we had a great cruise because we met some really great people, but the service and food on board were disappointing and frustrating. Nothing major went wrong, just lots of little annoyances that added up – mainly with lines and waits. Our past 6 cruises have either been with Disney or Regent. With Regent at least, we’ve been spoiled with cruises having 300-400 guests. But of course, we realize that comes at a steep price and we can’t afford to sail with them every year. However, I’d even rate Disney 2 stars higher than HAL in service and food.

I’ve graded each category and hopefully explained why I gave that particular grade. Please feel free to request more details.

CHECK IN - C

We arrived at the port around 1:30. The check in line was long, but it did move quicker than we anticipated. There was a mixup with the credit card and the two rooms, but it was sorted out quickly. As we first stepped onto the ship, I don’t recall any fanfare or anyone there to help us get to the Lido for lunch. I admit I was not paying much attention, but I distinctly can recall being welcomed by name on board Disney and with Regent, you are handed champagne, they offer to take your carry ons and you are personally led to lunch. Once we stepped onto the elevator, a staff member came on as well and told us we could only go to deck 9 as the rooms were not ready. They were ready around 2:00. Lunch at the Lido was chaos. We eventually got some plates of food but could not find an open table. Many tables were void of people but just had not yet been cleared and there was no busboy in sight.

CABIN - A

As we were traveling with our two boys (ages 6 and 11), we got two outside cabins next to each other. We wanted rooms with a connecting door, but only balcony rooms were available and the plan was to have the two boys together in one room and we did not want them having a balcony – no matter how good the locks. One room was 4101 and is listed as a partial sea view. The actual view was of a hydraulic winch and the life boats. The other room was 4099 and is listed as fully obstructed, yet actually had a better view of the ocean, although you had to look through the windows of the life boat hanging outside.

The cabins are nice and I had no complaints. The bathroom has a small tub and was not too cramped. There was plenty of space for our clothes and the A/C, hot water, phone, TV, etc. worked perfectly. Our main door would not shut by itself and someone was around to fix it the next day without us having to ask as it was noticed by the cabin stewards.

CABIN STEWARDS – A-

The cabin stewards were fantastic. Several times we requested wine glasses and they were brought immediately. They split the bed into two twins for the boys (requested during booking but not done). They removed the mini bar contents from both rooms, etc. Towel animals in both rooms every night. Only reason I did not give them an A+ is that once we stayed in our room a little later than usual and they kept asking when we would be gone even though I’d already given them a time. No big deal, but I did feel like we needed to hurry and vacate the room. These poor guys are very overworked. I would seem them with their cart far down the hallway and could not believe they had to take care of so many rooms.

DINING SERVICE / FOOD – C-

We picked the open seating / anytime option for dinner. It was announced that the best time to go was before 7:15 to avoid having to wait for a table. One night at 6:30 we still had a 45 minute wait. The last night, we had been invited to dinner by some friends we had made. Reservations were for 7:45 and we even had a table assignment. We went down to level 3 only to find a huge crowd waiting for the doors to open. It was hot, stuffy and very crowded and we waited at least 10 minutes before the crowd started moving and we were seated. It was very disorganized.

Service at the main dining room was good to poor depending on where you were seated and who was serving you. By bad service, I am talking about long waits before anyone came to our table or between courses, not rude staff or gross mistakes. It was obvious that the wait staff were overworked. I often found my main course arriving before I had ever seen the wine attendant. A few times I also had dessert before the coffee arrived. However, it was annoying that if I was out by the pool or in the casino, I was asked every couple of minutes if I’d like anything from the bar. At some times the pool waiter said things like “Why don’t you have a beer?”, or when I did finally order a beer he asked “Would you like two or three?” And they were not joking. It was very annoying and I hated having to wave them off while trying to read a book. I heard people complain that they had too many staff working around the pool and not enough in the dining room.

The Lido was self service and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The dinner is the same menu as the main restaurant, except self service. My biggest complaint was the layout and the lack of trays. The lack of trays meant you had to make several trips to your table. Others complained about the lack of trays and we were told they got rid of them because it held up the lines too much. However, occasionally you’d see someone with a tray. I don’t know how they got them because I had no luck when I requested one. The layout of the Lido with drinks on one end and the different stations sounds good in theory, but really just created sort of a traffic jam in areas. It also meant you walked a good deal back and forth. I also found a large number of people cutting in front of me in the lines, especially for ice cream. I don’t think we had more than our share of rude people, I think it was the layout of the lines that made it unclear where to go. Another annoyance with the Lido was the small glasses used for drinks. This meant constantly going back for more. My final gripe about the Lido is the silly display case they hide the desserts behind. It is very difficult to get a dessert out and often the staff had to assist people. Not that the desserts were worth taking in the first place.

We got room service for breakfast 4 mornings and dinner 3 evenings for the boys. Not once did they get it 100% right. At least one item, if not several were missing each time. If the missing items were requested, it would always arrive 30 or more minutes later.

Our one night at the Pinnacle was nice, but started off badly. We assumed at this meal we would get exceptional service. However, when the maitre de brought us to our table, it was right near the kitchen door, so we asked if we could be seated at any of the other 2 person tables around us – there were at least 3 open. He acted very put out by this, thought for a long moment, and eventually put us at another table but made sure we knew how difficult we had made his life. Luckily, the two waiters were excellent and the steaks prepared perfectly.

Food is very subjective, so don’t take too much from my review in this area. I’ve read so many good reviews about the food, and yet I found it just plain. Breakfast was always good. Service seemed to be best at breakfast. Lunch was the usual. Dinner was hit or miss, but mostly miss. I had a few good soups and the salads were always good. The appetizers also were nice. But the main entrees, excepting the surf and turf, were plain. The desserts were blah. None made us say WOW. Food at the pool grill and on Half Moon Cay was good.

At the risk of making everyone reading this roll their eyes and dismiss my report out of hand, I must admit that THE BEST cruise dining experience ever was at the adult only Palo on the Disney Cruise. I know, I know – Disney??? Yes. Over and above Regent’s premier dining experience. The last two Disney cruises we booked the Palo dinner at a reasonable $10 per person additional charge and it was well worth every cent – both times. Let me explain. Servers had 2 to 3 tables. They were friendly and knowledgeable. When we could not decide between 3 entrees, they brought all 3 or half orders of each. All were excellent and presented as a work of art. When we raved about the soufflé, they brought more. If we were not sure about dessert, they brought mini of each. And items arrived in proper time and order. 2 stars above Pinnacle.

ENTERTAINMENT – B-

The night’s entertainment was the standard cruise line shows. Nothing was terrible but nothing stood out either. I LOVED the live music on board at a time when I hear many cruise lines are getting rid of live bands. There was a small band playing oldies in the various bars, a more upbeat band that played on deck and also in some of the clubs, and a string quartet which we very much enjoyed. We did not care for the cruise director’s personality, but he did a good job because we enjoyed the entertainment. For the size of the ship it did seam that there could have been more organized activities during the sea days. But we were just as happy relaxing.

PUBLIC ROOMS – B

On this ship you are never more than a couple feet from a bar. They are everywhere. However, there is only one place to get cappuccino or espresso – go figure. The casino and shops are fine, no complaints there. The library was up on the observation deck and you could check out a book and relax with an amazing bow view. Unfortunately, it shared the same space with a bar (what else?). Once, around mid afternoon, the bartender was working everyone up with chants, such as “one tequila, two tequila, three tequila, four.” It is great fun if you are at the bar, but annoying if you are trying to read a book.

PORTS

Overall, other than Half Moon Cay, all ports were docked and did not require a tender. That is a big plus in my book. Tendering is always a hassle and takes longer. HAL gets an A for this itinerary in that regard.

Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos – D

Not much to do here. The landscape is barren and desert like with nothing tropical about it. It is pretty ugly to be honest. We took a dune buggy ride which we really did for the boys and they did enjoy it. The port is like Costa Maya – cruise company made and designed to keep your money with the cruise line. Some ports have these little tents right at the dock where the locals come to sell their crafts and keeps the tourists from venturing further. But this concept is a step farther. They make permanent shops and also make a man-made beach area for those wanting the sand and water. Although with this island, that really is the only option.

San Juan, Puerto Rico – A

I’m biased because we’ve been to Puerto Rico before and love it. We love Puerto Rico for the food (the road side stands are great) and the shopping is pretty good too. The night life is fun, and I commend HAL for keeping the ship in port until 11:30 pm. The El Yunque rainforest is spectacular.

At this port we walked over to the Sheraton to rent a car. A very nice lady, her friend and daughter from Holland were also in line when we were told there were no more cars. So we all took a taxi to El Yunque and hiked to the main waterfall and enjoyed some food and our new friends along the way.

Tortola, BVI – B

Tortola is a beautiful island. We rented a jeep and rode around as much of the island as possible stopping whenever we wished to take photos, shop or eat. People were friendly and we always felt safe. We were not at this port for very long and I wished the ship could have stayed until 7 or 8 at night which would have given us more time to explore. Unfortunately, we had to be back around 3.

Half Moon Cay – B

I read many reviews that raved about Half Moon Cay. It was pretty good, but not great. First, the beach was super crowded. At least there were plenty of chairs and I did not feel like we had to walk miles to find an empty one. However, they are stacked 3 or 4 deep, so the beach is packed. The BBQ area is very nicely landscaped, but the food is just average BBQ fare. Non alcoholic drinks were from a machine and twice when I went to get something, they were empty and I had to wait several minutes for someone to refill them. When they did, it was only with lemonade, although other options were originally available.

The kids playground area was nice. My boys liked the water slide and fountain. The snorkeling was as good as can be expected from a place that gets so many tourists. HAL scores a bonus point in not having overbearing lifeguards making you wear vests and such just to snorkel.

We did not take any excursions. We pretty much stayed right there on the beach. It was relaxing, very clean, the sand was nice and the water gentle. There is no shade, so renting a clam shell is almost required. At $15 a day, it is not overpriced.

KID FRIENDLY CRUISE – B-

Having two young boys we were happy that there was the CLUB HAL - a dedicated area on board just for kids and tweens. By itself, Club HAL would rate a B and not an A only because I have compared it to Disney. The overall kid friendliness gets a B- because of the lack of water slides and other areas that kids would enjoy. But my boys are perfectly happy without the water slides and really appreciate interaction with the counselors.

Positive

The counselors were great and came up with an amazing variety of things for the kids to do. There were video games, but they were limited in use and so the counselors actually interacted with the kids instead of just babysitting them.

Negative

They never took the kids for lunch or dinner. My boys would have loved having a pizza party with all the other kids one night rather than being dragged to the main dining room and spending hours for their dinner.

Note: One of the activities on board for the kids was a scavenger hunt. While great for the kids, I’m sure some of the adults did not like 40 or so kids running and screaming all over the ship unsupervised.

In conclusion, I’d say the main problems I had with HAL resided in the poor service in the dining rooms and the average food quality. The whole dining experience was less than average and is one of my favorite parts about a cruise. If we cruise with anyone other than Disney or Regent, it won’t be HAL.

Sorry you didn't much enjoy your Westerdam Christmas cruise. Your review reads as very open minded. Me, I'm not a rabid HAL cheerleader by any means but I hope you will give HAL a second chance. If the only cruise I could judge HAL by was a Christmas cruise (and I have been on one of those!) I would not be much impressed either. I realize that sometimes families have to cruise on holidays because that's when the kids are out of school and available but -- and this is just my very biased personal opinion -- Christmas cruises are absolutely the very worst. Ships are packed jam full at Christmas and demands are made on the crew on these cruises that are almost unbelievable. It would be nearly impossible, I think, for any cruise line to perform as well under such burdensome conditions as they do other times. I'll be sailing Westerdam January 3rd (Southern Caribbean) and I will also submit a review of what transpires. Hopefully, my cruise will be more enjoyable than your unfortunate one.

Welcome Home.

Soory your Christmas cruise on the Westerdam wasn't up to your expectations.

There is an area that you left out. Value for the dollar. Disney is usually 2 to 3 times as much as a mass market cruise line which puts it out of many families budget. I am appreciate your comparisions; they probably show that you are getting your money's worth even if it's not the same experience.

I have been thinking of doing a Disney cruise so your comparision is very helpful.

Thank you for the VERY honest review. We will be on the Westerdam this Sunday, this will be our second HAL our first on the Eurodam was not the best experience but we are giving it another try. I have to agree with you on Disney..everyone can roll their eyes till they fall out but the food and service on Disney is second to none. Palo is among the best of the best. We chose this crusie for the itinerary. We are looking forward to Curacao and Aruba.
I guess this will be my last HAL cruise or the second of many to come. Thanks for the review.

I have just re-read my earlier post about how terrible I think Christmas cruises are, and I think I perhaps came across as far too judgemental. I mean, we have only been on one HAL Christmas cruise and we have been on only one RCCL Christmas cruise, and we took those cruises one year after the other because my wife's mother had recently died and she didn't want to spend Christmas at home those years and be overwhelmingly reminded of the loss of her mother. That being said, however, I still cannot honestly say that I believe that Christmas cruises ever really live up to expectations. They can't. The ships are horrendously over-crowded, there are far too many large extended families with hordes of unruly children, and the crews are vastly overworked. It's not that Christmas cruises are entirely unenjoyable because any cruise is fun; it's more that they just can't live up to other, less demanding sailings. Again, though, this is just my opinion.

Not just Christmas -- that ^^^ was our experience on a Thanksgiving cruise, though the 100s of children weren't unruly as much as they were everywhere. We now avoid holiday cruises, because of our experience at Thanksgiving.

OP -- thanks for the review.

Disney is certainly higher rated than HAL in terms of food and dining service. But, of course, their itinerary is very limited. What we like about HAL is the overall combination of food, service, value, and itinerary.

In our experience, we have not had major problems with anytime dining on HAL, including getting our choice of dining time. But ships and cruises vary.

So you might want to give HAL another chance, especially on an itinerary that Disney does not cover.

I agree with you about Palo. It is the best dining experience on a cruise I have ever had. And close to the best on land as well.

Palo is a wonderful experience, food and service, but the regular dinning options on Disney are far less satisfying than HAL. As mentioned above Disney is more expensive, but they have the largest cabins and best entertainment.

I have noticed for a while that the larger HAL ships don't seem to offer the same experience as the "R" and "S" class ships. I suspect the passenger to crew ratio may be different. I also suspect that the longer HAL cruises get better ratings than the seven day cruises.

I agree with all the posters that suggest that holiday cruises are a product all by themselves. Disney is probably the only cruise line capable of handling large numbers of children in a very professional way. On Disney the adult areas are kept exclusively for adults, something other lines try to do but don't do very well.

I hope you try HAL again, but a different time of year and perhaps longer itinerary.

I agree that Disney is higher priced and so for the value, we did feel like we got what we paid for. We do get a good Florida discount on Disney in off season, so its not too bad - and we are close to the port.

I agree that Christmas puts added stress on the ship's crew. I had not thought of that before.

Our cruise was not terrible. We still had a good time. A lot of our enjoyment comes from meeting new people.

Thanks for this well-written, honest review. I'll be sailing the Westerdam for the first time in a few months, so I was especially curious to read it. In general, I agree with everything you wrote as general observations of HAL cruises I've been on in the past, even though I've never sailed a holiday cruise (and probably won't because of the exorbitant mark-up).

Although I've never taken a Disney cruise, I am a big Disney fan. Our family has taken countless trips to Disneyland, Disney World, and Tokyo Disney and know that they have the art of customer service down pat. We're really looking forward to taking a Disney cruise one of these days, but that probably won't happen until the new ships are delivered and their itineries expanded a bit.

I have to dispute the conventional wisdom that Disney cruises are more expensive, though. Any time I've priced out a Disney cruise, in a similar cabin and similar itinerary to HAL, the price has been comparable. I think it's one of those groupthink things--people EXPECT Disney to be more expensive, and then just assume they are.

To wrap up, if HAL would focus more on the elegance of the cruising experience (fewer bartenders hawking tequila shots, for example) and redouble their efforts with things like service in the Pinnacle Grill, they could clearly position themselves as the best premium cruise line. They've got the beautiful ships, varied itineraries, range of dining options, and generally excellent service. It doesn't seem like it would take much (and maybe not even anything that would require raising fares) to elevate themselves above the immediate competition.

What we like about HAL is the value for the dollar. Can't really compare more expensive cruises with HAL. But when you compare similarly priced cruises with HAL, HAL scores very high. What you found to not like, is what we find is where the tradeoffs exist getting this better value for the dollar.

And this is naturally subjective. But it just seems unfair to compare pricier lines to HAL. Unrealistic really. Our choice was to cruise more with nice amenities and not care that much about superior food or the order our coffee or wine comes.

Eating less because everything is not "wow" becomes a good thing for me, but I will say their croissants are wow and I always hated to see the powder sugar donuts run out in the morning. But I hear you about the entrees - only modest and often not worth the calories to finish. For us, this was an okay compromise, because I don't expect more than good cafeteria food on a large ship. I eat too much anyway when I cruise.

I had to laugh because all those things happened to us too, but because those did not matter to us I had completely forgotten about them. So your observations are correct and since this matters, I don't think you will do better trying other HAL ships.

We know there will be corners cut but as long as the cabins are wonderful, the intineraries are great and the prices competitive and as you also agree the service attitude special, we will long be happy with our HAL choices. I also agree the larger Vista class ships on a holiday time cruise are not the best time to get the HAL feeling. They do feel like more of a mad house than the other HAL ships we have been on.

While some of the food was better on Crystal which we had previously cruised on, the rest of what Crystal offered was not any better and some times worse, so dropping down our dining expectations to get more cruising and a very nice atmosphere on HAL for us was an easy trade-off.

I also agree the placement of the Library and Explorers Cafe on the Vista class ships is not great compared to their far more spacious and private locations on HAL's smaller ships. I don't think we will choose a Vista ship again but for sure we will be choosing the smaller HAL ships for a long, long time.

You would find a different atmosphere, layout and dining experience on the smaller ones. But since you travel with children, these probably would not work for you as they are mainly for older travellers who like things quiet and lowkey.

If HAL was paid the same as you paid for Regent and Disney, I imagine you would get similar value. But to be fair, comparing those to the higher volume lower cost Vista ships just won't work. Thanks for your report and your observations were fair and honest and similar to many we have also observed. It is context really; not just comparison that ultimately works here. HAL remains an excellent value for the dollar. We love them.

We sailed on the Westerdam several weeks ago and never once felt pressured to buy anything, in particular additional drinks. It was one of the many appealing aspects of our first HAL cruise. And while not comparable to dining at a 5 star restaurant, we thought the food on this ship was consistently very good to excellent. The service in the MDR is a problem however and it is disorganized and uneven.

We will be on the Westerdam next July and want to know about the Library onboard. Does it have lots of good fiction? We just loved the Rotterdam's library.

Half Moon Cay is a relief from the other over-developed port stops in the Caribbean. Don't think it is supposed to be much more. It is a visually lovely, quiet stop after all the other port frenzy and a chance to enjoy the sun and get in the water or just hike quietly around the island.

Agree, the food was not anything more than just food to keep one from being hungry and it is too bad they can't do a real Caribbean BBQ, but I understand they are working with sanitation demands that requires the food be all prepared onboard and then hauled in by the tenders.

Again, context for what you get seems to be key here. It is just a nice low key lovely little island and and nice way to cap off ones memories of the Caribbean and seeing one's lovely dam ship floating off in that exquisite turquoise blue waters.

The library on the Oosterdam was wonderful. I quickly grabbed three just from one section and enjoyed each of them.

Thanks for the review.
On the Westerdam just before you - the 6th to the 13th - and noticed the same service problems in the Vista Dining Room. Everyone was pleasant and eager - and inexperienced and disorganized and slow. Had better luck with the food quality which was pretty good (for mass produced cruise fare - even the lobster wasn't overcooked). Ditto the Pinnacle where the service had an amateurish style to it tho' the food was quite good.
There was a bit of a "faded grandeur" air to it all. The place between decks in the Dining Room where musicians could play was piled with unused furniture. Same as the room for cards half of which was a furniture storehouse. I don't ever recall the bar by the main desk ever opening. Corridor by the piano bar smelled of mildew.
For some reason the Captain both at his little chat in the showlounge and again at the Mariners luncheon felt compelled to assure us all that Holland America was "not going broke". Odd?
I envy your "younger crowd". I'm in my early sixties and our fellow passengers were positively ancient.
Still it was a good cruise on a nice ship and with the right itinerary at the right price I'd go Westerdam again.
Happy cruising.

Thank you for a marvelous review!

I'm also not a huge fan of the food on HAL, based on the one cruise i've been on... but, we are cruising with HAL again in March. HAL does have the best beds I've slept on :)

I'd not considered a Disney cruise - might in the future, if the food ever becomes that important to me :D

Thanks for the long review, but our children are 30 years old, so we'd rather go by row boat with a peanut butter sandwich than be on a Disney Cruise with the best food on the planet with a bunch of children LOL !

We will be on the Westerdam this year to Europe and we are looking forward to it. We don't plan on having alot of night life as we will be doing alot of long tours and will want to get to bed early.

We have noticed that the Westerdam only shows excursions for 3 of the 7 European ports for October ??? Does anyone know if that is because they don't list excursions this far in advance, or you just are expected to schedule your own private excursions ?

Any help is appreciated !

Oh, HAL doesn't want you booking private excursions! They want the money to be spent with them.

The contracts for next season's shore excursions probably haven't been signed yet. I've been checking excursions for my Westerdam cruise, and learned that excursions for a few ports have recently been entered. A few, but not nearly all.

I'm betting that when the excursions for the spring sailings are entered, the ones for October will be entered, too.

Thank you for your honest and well written review. I am sorry your cruise was somewhat subpar. I suspect it may have to do with the time frame, but opinions are obviously subjective and everyone is entitled to their own. :-)

I have really enjoyed two Westerdam cruises. One was a spring break cruise, the other was a cruise in early November. I rate the second cruise as likely the best vacation I've ever taken! HAL was on its 'A' game for the most part but the company I was with cooperated (hubby) and the stars aligned to give us an amazing vacation. We had some minor annoyances but nothing that was going to add up like the OP's.

To the poster considering DCL, a mini-review - I, too, have sailed DCL. Let me point out that I am an avid Disney fan. We take a family vacation to WDW at least once per year. That mouse knows how to separate me from my money :-)! However, the 7 day Magic cruise we sailed was likely one of the absolute worst vacations we have ever taken. I will not sail DCL again because the cost is not worth the product on any level. The food was mediocre to bad, the staff was friendly until tips were dispersed, the shows were great but good luck trying to get an adult beverage, and there was a line for everything! We ate at Palo but did not feel it was a wonderful culinary experience. Our waiter was harried and that really detracts from the ambiance. However, we had brunch there and it was wonderful! As far as the ship itself is concerned, the Magic (and, the Wonder) is a classy lady! She is a beautiful ship and is well maintained. Lastly, the private island, Castaway Cay, doesn't hold a candle (or, a Candle on the Water for you Disney fans!) to Half Moon Cay. Yes, the ship docks at Castaway but that's about the only plus to my way of thinking. The island itself is just not as beautiful as HMC, or NCL's private island for that matter.

All of the above, JMHO...

My daughter was one of the counselors on your cruise. I believe she worked with the 3-7 year olds that sailing. I'll pass on your nice comments. With regard to your comment about the pizza party, that is done quite often on Princess and RCL, my children's favorite line. FWIW, we often took our kids to the buffet for an early dinner and then signed them in to the kids program so we could enjoy our meal.

We were on the week before and the kids club ROCKED every time we went by the kids were doing cool stuff from playing the Wii to drinking and smoking cigs..............no that was the sports bar where the smoking and drinking were going on and it was aplenty.............

In my opinion the great counselors were what MADE this an incredible kids club. They did not have a lot of space to work with, they had lots more kids than normal because it was the Christmas cruise, and yet my 6 year old had a blast.

We did not drag our kids to dinner every night. We got them room service a few times and also brought them down to the Lido early so we could have dinner with only adults.
