Booking our 4th Zuidy and would like to know the depth differences of Cat SS verandas on various decks. Have previously had 2 Cat S (one inside corner, one wake) and a Cat A (wake) and have heard that some decks are deeper than others.

Can anyone recommend a great midships cabin?

Zuiderdam, etc are called the Vista Class...
All verandahs along the sides are the very same depth w/ the very minor exceptions of the ones on the bends. Unlike other lines, the decks don't cascade down the sides as they do at the stern.
The verandah differences are in width. Standard Verandahs are @ 10' wide, SS's @ 15' and S's @ 20'

On the Vista class ships, Zuider- Ooster- and Westerdam, the verandah cabins on Verandah deck that are in the central, indented section of the ship, have somewhat smaller verandahs. The cabin size generally is the same.

The verandah width is the same as the others, but the depth is 12 to 18 inches less. They are still very usable, and many people feel the more central location is preferable because motion can be less.

On many ships, the more centrally located verandah cabins would comand a higher price. But because of the slightly smaller verandahs on the indented
section of the Vista ships, those cabins generally are a bit less.

Also, in the indented section of the Verandah deck the verandahs look down onto the lifeboats, so you can't see the hull of the ship at the waterline, which is no biggie IMO. There is no obstruction to looking out to sea, however.

I saw somewhere that the regular verandahs were 48 sq ft and those in the indented section were 41 sq ft. I have no idea if those figures are correct, but it sounds about right.

The verandahs across the stern are much larger than any of the side verandah cabins.

I hope this explanation is clear enough to be helpful.

Here's our verandah from SS 6060 on the Oosterdam. Comfortable but not large. Must admit we got spoiled by our first real verandah on the Ryndam several years ago. :)

Candy - With the overhang from the deck above we did not get a lot of sun. Typically we use our verandah early in the morning and in the evening and not much during the rest of the day. This picture was taken right after we got on the Oosterdam so I'd say it's about 2-3 PM but we were facing east so the sun would have been on the other side of the ship.

That's a bummer... to get the big veranda with the sun, you need to book a Cat S (which we can't afford this time) or Cat A (which we had last time and found to be too cramped). We'll manage... thanks.

Candy - Just my observation but I think if somebody really wants a great verandah with lots of sun then one of the aft cabins is the best bet. I don't know if there are aft cabins in every verandah class and I'd imagine that these book up pretty quickly as there aren't many. I do know that I wasn't much interested in them until I looked over the stern of the Oosterdam....some of the verandahs are simply huge.
