View Full Version : Review of my 1st HAL cruise

I just returned today from my first HAL cruise aboard the Veendam.
Some background info about me before reading the review...I usually cruise Celebrity ( and love it), dislike Carnival, am married and in my mid 20's. I do like a classier, more refined group of pax.

The Ship
m.s. Veendam was beautiful. I loved the orchids in the Lido. The size of the ship was nice and navigating was a breeze. My cabin 421 was large and comfortable. I enjoyed being on the lower prom deck overlooking the aft. There were no privacy issues concerning pax walking on deck past my window. Only complaint is that whenever we docked it sounded like the ship was going to fall apart. The noises were so loud that it was almost impossible to sleep in during a port day. No ac problems in cabin, but very cold on deck 8 midship around casino and explorer's lounge. We did hit worse weather than I am used to and I don't know if the size of ship I was on made a difference or not.

The Service
The service was adequate, but cannot even compare to Celebrity. Our waiter did a good job, but was not very outgoing or willing to go the extra mile. The whole area around our table was empty, so it was not like he was too busy. Maybe this a cultural thing. I have found that the Indonesians and Philipinos are not as friendly. Bar service in the Crow's Nest was superb. Rodel and Reden always had our drinks waiting for us. They also went out of the way go get us appetizers each night before dinner. In the lido I almost always had to carry my own tray and go get my own drinks. Speaking of which...the only choices were tea, water and coffee. X always has fruit punch and lemonade as well as the staples. I was wishing I had bought a soda card on about the third day.

The Food
OK...lets get to the stuff that matters...food was good for the most part.
Breakfast in the lido was standard. The typical stuff as every cruise. Our problem was that it ended so early and we wound up eating the poor continental breakfast a few too many times. They need to keep the buffet open later for the sleepyheads.
Lunch in the lido was above average. I think this is where HAL outshines Celebrity. Most everything I ordered was tasty and perfectly prepared. The broccoli puree soup was fantastic as were many of the desserts. I also appreciated the hand sanitizers in each restaurant. That was a nice touch for us germaphobes. I did not make it to the dining room for breakfast or lunch. Dinner in the dining room was not as good as X, but certainly edible. Most food was good, but almost nothing was excellent. I found the food to be a little bland, but well prepared. I missed the waiters hand pouring cocktail sauce, dressings, etc as they do on X. I do give HAL credit for more variety, though. I think there was many more options with the exception of salads. Pinnacle Grill was outstanding. The ribeye may have been the best I have ever had as well as the clam chowder. The problem was service. It was very slow and it seemed as though we were there for hours, even though it was empty. Specialty rest. on X had 5 star service ie) synchronizing plate placing and removal, hand picking meats, table side preparation, etc. I would not let the service deter me from going back to the Pinnacle. I was just expecting better service than what I was getting in the main dining room.

Fellow Pax
Ok...now this is where some people may get mad. Now, I knew the average age of the pax would be old. This is HAL. I did not know it going to be this old. Now old is not always a bad thing, but when they are grumpy and sour then it is a problem. I am quite accustomed to being around more refined people but I was quite disappointed in my fellow pax. On the formal nights I did not see the classiness I was expecting. My DH and I were always impeccably dressed and we thought everyone else would be, too. It was almost as bad as Carnival dare I say. We felt out of place in the tux and evening gown. Every evening I could not believe how poorly pax were dressed. And this was a problem with the young and old. There worst part about it was the the dress code was never inforced in the dining room as it should have been. I have seen pax turned away from the dining room due to dress code on X. This did not happen on HAL. I guess anything goes. But I feel that if pax do not want to get dressed up then they should eat at alternative dining or do a freestyle cruise. I also overheard several older pax being extremely rude to the bar staff and complaining way too often, especially about the younger pax. Have fun, you're on a cruise. How bad could it be? Of course tipping was an issue. I was at information and heard several pax getting their tips taken off. I was appauled. Unfortunatly, HAL makes it too easy to do so. Not once did the employee question if there was a problem with their service or anything of the sorts. Just fill out a paper and that's it. No questions asked. HAL should be explaining their policy and educating these people as to what happens when you don't tip.

All in all I had a great cruise. It's really hard to have a bad cruise. I met a lot of nice people and gained a few pounds and got lots of relaxation. I did enjoy HAL, but I still prefer Celebrity. I don't think there is any comparison between the two. Would I cruise with HAL again? Probably if the price was right and itinerary good. But it would only be on the new vista class as I hear it is a bit younger crowd.

Melissa, thank you so much for your thoughtful, caring review. I think you took great care not to upset anyone.

First, although I wasn't on the same ship (I was on Oosterdam), I find myself agreeing with almost everything you say. This upsets me because I wanted the negatives on my cruise not to be the norm.

Like you, I love Celebrity. I've read on these boards recently that there's a downhill trend on the line, but I hope it isn't so.

I do wish I knew your itinerary and how many days because a few things you say surprised me, but very few.
I should tell you that I am "old";) (well, not that old, but old to mid 20's ) But I'm not grumpy or sour:D . It's interesting that my cruise had very few really "old" people whereas my last Celebrity cruise seemed like a 1922 Class Reunion:D !!! So sometimes that's the luck of the draw.

I'm amazed that people didn't dress for formal nights, because I've always felt the majority dress to the nines on HAL. Also, in our Pinnacle the service was superb and they did synchronize serving each dish. Each plate landed in front of us at precisely the exact time ... a****ng feat!

But how about those beds!!?? You had to love the beds. Do they have the new ones on the Veendam?

But beyond that I agree with all your observations. Thank you for taking the time. Your review was well thought out and very fair and I really appreciate it.

Melissa,

I am sorry you had people who were rude and didn't dress correctly. I am wondering if it is the itinerary that seems to make people decide on what they are wearing on formal nights.

We did a wonderful Black Sea cruise on the Prinsendam in October and I would say that at the late sitting, at least 70% of the men were in tuxedos and the rest in lounge suits. We never had anyone under dressed in the dining room and even though there were many passengers older than ourselves (we are early 60's), I think the average age was about 70 on board, everyone was very fit, well and happy and there were no sour faces.

We also were on a cruise last year on the Noordam, Copenhagen to Rome and once again the standard of dress was fantastic. I have never been on a cruise where people have not followed the guidelines. Perhaps it is the itineraries we choose or the length of the cruise.

It is disappointing when you dress up and other people haven't bothered. To me that is part of the whole cruise experience.

Heather,
I was on a 7 day out of Tampa. We did Grand Cayman, Montego Bay, and Cozumel. Oooohhh yesss, those were the new beds and sheets. That may have played a role in our missing breakfast:)
1922 Reunion.....yeah, that's pretty old! That sounds almost feasable for a pax that was 108 on our cruise. I just hope I'm still cruising when I get up there.

I'm guessing the average age was about 82 years.

LOL ... I would have been a "youngster" on that cruise! They all could be my parents! I should have gone:D

We're going CC class on our upcoming Summit cruise and they say the bedding is upscale. I don't know if it can compare with HAL there! The beds and bedding were out of this world.

Thanks for the thoughtful review. Do you mind commenting on which Celebrity ships you have cruised and which you preferred?

I have been on the Century twice, Zenith, and Constellation. I loved the Connie the most. She was newer, big and beautiful. There is a great indoor thalassotherapy pool (free) and food and service was the best ever. The Century had always been great, too. the Zenith was older and smaller, but always food and service is great.

I don't think the bedding can get better than HAL. Sorry, Celebrity.

I just came back from a ten day cruise on the Volendam. I gave the cruise a 9 out of 10. There were plenty of chairs at both pools. That's a big plus for a sun worshiper like me. Ninety five percent of the passengers were dressed to the nines on the three formal nights.
I have sailed on the Century twice. The Volendam was every bit as nice as the Century.

Thanks for your review Melissa!

On our early Dec. Rotterdam 10 day Sunfarer cruise I was surprised at the amount of well dressed folks! Like you, I'd found that there were many people noticeably underdressed on our cruise on the Ryndam to Alaska this summer. I wish I could explain why the 2 trips differed, but I've not a clue...;) :)

Last August, on the Amsterdam to Alaska (7 days)...both formal nights I'd say 85% dressed to the nines (some tens) and other's....well, one at our table had a clean sweatshirt :p ... delightful gal though so we didn't mind :D
Average age...40's...given the huge number of children and elderly

Nice review. Enjoyed reading it and thanks for the posting.

At the risk of having a few arrows coming my way, I believe there is a difference in the pax mixture from the ports of Tampa and Port Canaveral vs those sailing from Miami and Ft Lauderdale. I have sailed from all three, and sometimes the pax difference is noticable. The former attract more of a Disney and other theme park crowd while the later have always had the reputation of being the "cruise center" of Florida and have a tendency to attract a more upscale and dressier crowd.

The newer ports seem to be attracting a drive-in crowd with a more casual attitude towards cruising but will still comply with the bare bones basics of HAL's definitions of formal and informal wear. Certainly not a 'jeans in the DR crowd", but not the tux & gown crowd either.

Oh well, just one more opinion.....

Happy cruising.....and by the way, Tampa does have a nice mixture of ships from the various cruise lines & seems to be getting better. Hope that Celebrity comes up with something nice to replace the soon-to-be-gone Horizon.

lissa....Thanks so much for your review of Veendam! We'll be on Veendam in January for a 14 Day Southern so this was of special interest to us.

On a 14 Day in January on ANY cruise line we've always found the pax base to be older so pretty much expect that....

 Please answer a few questions for us when you have time:

What time is the Lido open for breakfast? Also, what were the normal hours for lunch in the Lido? Other than "room service" ... what sort of HOT food is available from 3 to 5 in the afternoon? :p Oink! Oink! :p

What about late afternoon/early evening entertainment in bars/lounges?

Did you have any problems keeping your stateroom at the temperature you wished?

Thanks again for your honest review -- the goods and the bads!

Happy Sailing! OCruisers :)

OCruisers,
Breakfast times fluctuated. Most days it was until 10. But others it was only until 9:30. Lunch was served usually 11:30 - 2, but that too fluctuated by a half hour or so, too. I would have been OK if they kept all times the same.

HOT food from 3-5 would leave the grill for hotdogs and hamburgers. There is also a taco bar that serves tacos and nachos. It was not bad at all.

There was not too much entertainment for those times, but I have also found this to be the norm on most of my previous cruises. I had the 8:30 seating and would visit the Crow's Nest prior to dinner. There was a singing duo in there, but truthfully the woman was a really poor singer. I can't imagine how she got this gig....

There were no a.c. problems at all in my stateroom.

I hope I answered all of your questions. If anyone has more, feel free to ask.

PS...I forgot to add that thanx to CC I was able to find the bow of the ship and was lucky enough to be out there when we passed under the Sunshine Skyway at 3 am when we returned. I would have never found it otherwise. It was an awesome experience.

Thanks for posting your review and comparison to X.

We just did a 21 day fall cruise HAL and were surprised to find that on all the formal nights very few people really dressed up compared to some of the other long cruises that we have been on.

Melissa,

Thanks for an honest and interesting review. I love comparison reviews and find them the most helpful and telling.

We had cruised Celebrity twice (and other lines many times) before our first HAL cruise on the Ryndam around South America. It was a wonderful cruise but we still preferred X at that time.

We returned to Celebrity for a third cruise, based on the good food, and later took our 2nd HAL cruise because of the itinerary. It was on that 14-day Prinsendam cruise, where we had the best food we've ever had on a ship, that HAL began to become our favorite.

Now we've been on six HAL cruises and have two more booked. We've seen some slippage in service and food, but so far not enough to change our allegiance.

I'm glad to see you're willing to give HAL another try sometime - it worked for us!

Thanks, lissa, for a tactfully written critique of your HAL cruise. When I next need to dress someone down in a nice way, I'm gonn' call you to do the honors. LOL I really enjoyed reading it.

Interesting observation by another poster about the different passenger mix between FLL and Tampa. I've cruised both several times and I believe the poster is on to something about the newer "drive-in" ports.

DFD1,
I, too, have left out of both ports. I think you all may be on to something. But I must say, I left on the Zenith out of Tampa and did not have any problems now that I think about it, but it was a New Year's cruise....

I'm just happy that I didn't offend anyone. I did not want to get crucified for any unfavorable statement. I was just trying to fair and articulate. It took some thought while writing the review to be tactful.

lissa .... Thanks so much for your time to answer my questions! Like you, we have the 8:30 Dinner (which we want) ... so like to have a HOT bite to eat in the afternoons, especially after late shore excursion. :p I almost always miss breakfast too! :p

Age is a relative thing. When we are in our 30's and 40's we look at those in their fifties and sixties as "old timers." Now that I am in my mid sixties I see those in their fifties as young and those in their sixties as "middle age." Those who need walkers are a bit challanged. Twenty five years from now, I will probably thank God for walkers.

I also think you are on to something about the difference in the passenger's out of Tampa vs. Fort Lauderdale/Miami. After previously sailing 3 times out of Ft. Lauderdale we took our first cruise, a couple of weeks ago, out of Tampa. There was a definite difference in the passenger's. On formal nights, on the cruise out of Tampa, we saw people dressed in the dining rooms in head bands and jeans. This would never had been allowed on the other cruises we were on. The passenger's out of Fort Lauderdale just seemed to be a little more refined. Believe me, I am not a snob. I feel that if people are going to go to the dining rooms then they should dress for it. If not, they should go to the buffet. Just an observation......

lissa,

Great review! My wife and I did the Veendam last X-mas and our observations were right in line with yours. Celebrity is our favorite, but we will continue to sail HAL (our second choice) as it offers some great deals. This weekend, we are off to the Volendam. Have the Mercury, Century and Zuiderdam coming up in 2005.

Enjoy!

Why, pray tell? They've paid the same as you to enjoy the same as you. If they prefer not to dress up, why should that affect those of us who do (and we do!!!)? Someone else's manner, unless it disrupts my "space", is their business. Live and let live. Not trying to start a flame, just encouraging others to lighten up a bit. We are each responsible for our own contentment; no one should be able to upset that apple cart.

And by doing so (read your contract) they've agreed to abide by the line's rules. Rights bring concomitant responsibilities. Those who prefer "free style" cruising have a number of different lines to choose from.
