Ok everyone,

Please keep in mind; this was a “Ladies Only” Monarch of the Seas 4 day party cruise and “only my very own opinion” on my first experience with RCL. I know others will have totally different experiences; I am just giving you mine. I’m sorry if this review offends anyone, I want to help others who might want to try this cruise and to anyone who wants a comparison to RCL 4 day cruise.

FLYING DAY:

We didn’t have to fly as we live about 30 minutes drive away from Port Of Los Angeles (San Pedro).

Traffic was light and we arrived a lot earlier than we wanted, approx. 10:30am, we were able to check in (which took all of 5 minutes) but they did not start boarding till 12:00pm. As we were the second group of 15 to board, it only took 15 minutes to get on the ship. Although I was told on the RCL board that they start boarding the ship at 11am, we had a good time laughing during the 1 1/2 hour wait in between checking in and boarding. After all this is where I learned that you could not take pictures anywhere inside the port, I almost got my video camera taken away! And for some reason my group thought this was funny hehehe.

Our cabin was a Jr. Suite #1584, about the same size as our B cat. on the Zuiderdam, a tad smaller though.

We no sooner arrived to our cabin and a birthday cake for me arrived from our TA. It needed to be kept cold. The cabin was not very clean, the fridge did not work and had spilled food in it and running out of it onto the carpet, but it was restocked full with sodas and waters! The girls had it decorated for my birthday, so that was neat. We called to have the cabin cleaned properly and we then headed to the Windjammer buffet to get some lunch.

Lunch food was good but nothing really different than a regular buffet. Great presentation and seemed very clean. You serve yourself, carry your food to your table and a steward would get you your drink. They had 3 areas to serve the buffet from, but most days they only had one open and it was very crowded. One day they has 2 sections open and it was busy but enjoyable and went a lot faster, I hate long lines J and never experienced this on HAL. Lunch in the windjammer was good, breakfast was terrible and we never ate dinner in there. Good deserts, juices were ok and pizza was yucky!

The lifeboat drill, was very casual and it didn’t seem to matter if people showed up or not, they never took names so had no way of knowing who showed up or not. We went because I want to be prepared incase I need to be, but there were a lot of pax missing during this event. The funny part was they didn’t even have women and children in the front, they didn’t put you in any order, so I was in the back and since I am very short, my group couldn’t see me unless I jumped up and down while my life vest was bumping into others around me, so I didn’t want to spoil their vacation soooooooo I just stood there buried in the life vests! Boy was I glad when the drill was over! Hehehe

Back to our cabin only to find our cabin was still not cleaned and it was time to get ready for dinner. Fridge still not working either. And still no suit cases. We called about the cabin and non-working fridge and was assured it would be done right after we left for our 5:30 seating dinner.

DINNING ROOM

We has the 5:30 seating, table #132 for 6, by a window on the port side. There we met our servers Peter and Wayan. They were right on top of things, they even remembered what we liked in our coffee or to drink. We were able to order as much as we wanted, and the servings were larger than on HAL, which was a problem because there was a lot of waste after dinner and I’m not liking a lot of waste J. The food was really well prepared, presented and tasted great! Some dishes were better than others but even then they were good! We tried a lot of new dishes, some we liked and some we didn’t, but it was not because it was cooked poorly, we just didn’t like the taste. The food in the dinning room was very good during dinner meals, good for breakfast and we never ate in there for lunch. I would say the food in the dinning room is very comparable to HALs, but their buffet food was not even close to HALs.

We only saw one after dinner show and it was good, the cast did a seventies disco theme show. The rest of the nights we were in the Jacuzzi, casino, or on our balcony having a good time (not giving details).

We all at some point left our deposit at the casino, the nickel machines were not paying at all. Very tight machines is what pax were grumbling about. My youngest daughter did ok at the BJ tables.

SAN DIEGO

We pre-rented a rental car from Enterprise Car Rentals, they came right to the port and picked us up, took us to our car, and when we were done they also brought us back to the port. The cost was $34.95 economy car unlimited miles for 24 hours. We left the car rental place and traveled approx 35 minutes to the Barona Indian Casino (Kenny Rogers Place). We had a great time there, it was very beautiful and classy! It was a very huge casino with a food court (approx. 6 fast food places) and one restaurant serving buffet style as well as ordering from a menu. In the center of all this was lots of table and chairs. The machines were paying great for my best friend, I was just making my normal donations. As we were leaving I hit a machine for all my money back and lunch. I was happy as pie hehehehe. Tables were not paying real well either till later in the day. We headed back to the ship at 2:30pm (all aboard was at 4:30pm) as this was our one and only formal night and we needed lots of time for us 5 women to get ready! 3 of us in the Jr. Suite and 2 in an inside stateroom (#2069) below.

Formal dinner was fantastic! We were told that even though it was a formal night we could come in casual by the Mater”D the night before, so we were not happy thinking hardly anyone would dress up, we were wrong !!! At least at our seating we did not see anyone not dressed in formal clothing, I’m sure there were some but we didn’t see them. They had about 8 – 10 picture taking opportunities with different settings. Lines moved quickly I think because pax were spread out and not crammed into 2 lines like we were on HAL. The food was outstanding! I think between the 5 of us we ordered everything on the menu (so we all could taste everything hehehe) and only one item was not very good, it was a mussel dish. After dinner a lot of pax changed into casual clothing for the shows and bars.

CATALINA

This was our second port and it was our only tendering port. To my surprise we did not tender, we had a giant ferry pull up to the ship and load about 300 pax on and took us to the docks. No lines for this port getting on or off the ship hehehe. It was nice! We took the Skyline Drive tour, it was 3 hours and we saw most of Catalina, their airport, had a grill serving buffalo meat burgers! Eeeeewwwww! After the tour we did a little shopping, we did not buy anything as it was very expensive there. Everything was cheaper on the ship than here and the ship prices were not that cheap!

ENSENADA, MEXICO

This was our third and final port. We docked at 8am and were getting off the ship by 8:30am. There is a nice small shopping mall at the pier, prices were higher than in town and not as willing to bargain. We went on the La Bufadora (Blow hole) Tour. The (luxury) bus ride was very nice, and scenic route was nice too, yes we say some poor areas but we saw some very beautiful scenery as well. The Bufadora was neat and there were lots and lots of shopping there as well, a lot of people trying to get you into their little store booths. To use the restroom there cost 50 cents, they gave you some toilet paper with a piece of paper asking you not to flush the paper in the toilet but to throw it in the open trash can next to the toilet, as their system could not handle it. Ladies, thanks to this board, I learned to bring my own seat covers and paper to this town, trust me you need them! I would have been happier to go pee behind a bush! Hehehe sorry guys but us ladies need to know these things hehehe.

DIS-EMBARKATION

We were given the third color off the ship because we had a suite, they also allowed our 2 daughters in the inside cabin to depart at the same time. We were in the dinning room at 7:30am and out color was called at 8am, we finished breakfast and proceeded to dis-embark. Once off the ship I was separated from my group as I was the only one who had a passport, the passport line was very fast! I was off the ship in 15 minutes, it took the rest of my group 40 minutes.

Recap:

We had a wonderful time! Did things go wrong, Yes! Did it ruin or upset our cruise, NO!
Thanks to all the good advice I received on the cc’ers board we were fully prepared and had

everything we needed.
Would we cruise on this 4 day cruise again ….. Maybe. Too rushed for me but consider it with friends!

Would we cruise with RCL again? Maybe, it would not be my first choice but not my last either.

Oh yes, the saga of our broken fridge! We ended up having to call the main boss to get it taken care of. My cake melted and was ruined so the did provide me with another one, however the fridge was still broken duh! On our second night at 11pm they brought another fridge to replace the broken one, it worked! So we had at least one day with cold sodas and water.

We had to complain every day about our room steward, she was either very swamped or should never have been put on the suite deck! However our 2 daughters staying in the lower inside cabin had wonderful service and I was very pleased at least they had good service. I have never had such bad service on a cruise ship before and hope I never do again.

The A/C worked the whole time. The beds were comfy, hair dryer very powerful and hot, small bathroom, no plumbing problems, lots of storage space and drawers, no robes or fruit baskets in room, towels given at the pool, hot tub was really really hot!, Very nice décor in the ship! Centrum was just fantastic! Ship had holiday decorations up and were very nice, Staff in general were very pleasant.

I will be happy to answer any questions you might have.
Thanks Everyone for your support and friendship!

Here are a few pics, I don’t have them ready yet to post but here are a few. :)

Thanks for the report, Ziggy. It was an interesting read.
There was nothing here that would make me want to leave HAL, but at least it sounded like it met the minimal acceptable level for the most part.
I'm glad you had a nice time with "the girls".

Thanks Ziggy for posting your review. Enjoyed reading it.

We did an RCI cruise in 1993 - have never sailed them since.

Thanks also Ziggy. I have never considered RCL and now I know that it wouldn't be for us. I did enjoy reading about the cruise and am glad you had a great birthday and a happy time on board despite the troubles with your steward and the fridge.

Thanks for your review, Ziggy. I enjoyed reading it and am glad you had a good time. Sounds like a lot of fun.....a few down sides to the ship but you managed to enjoy yourselves anyway.

Happy Birthday. What fun to celebrate it aboard with your daughters and friends.

Aussie Gal (Jennie) That's the most beautiful ship picture you have in your signature. Did you take the photograph?

Thanks Ziggy,
I went on this ship Jan/04 and thought the ship was nice for such a short cruise and was better then I expected. RCCI is not my favorite but was good for this cruise. However, I ended up with a $1,000 medical bill while onboard - but that is another story.

Thanks everyone :)
I just want to say that for a 4 day cruise it was alot of fun, I'm sure RCI's seven day or longer crusies are totally different! In fact I know it is because this was a "party" 24 hours around the clock. So please dont decide on my review whether you might or might not sail on RCI on a normal cruise :) Happy Holiday Everyone!!!

What a wonderful way to spend a birthday (or actually any time) - with daughters and girlfriends. Glad you enjoyed it despite some minor problems.

Great pictures. Glad you had good time. So there were some things that went wrong, but it didn't spoil your vacation. I have been on 3 RCCL and they were very nice. It has been a few years and haven't tried any of the newer ships. I think sometimes they let things go on the older ships.
Great pictures!

HI Debbie, I was out of town and just now had the chance to read your review and look at your pictures, the pics are great. The first time on Monarch we were on the deck just below your where the cabins are a bit larger than the regular cabins but not quite as big as yours. I think you are right that the longer RCL cruises are a lot better. We were on a 5 day on the Monarch in March 2002 and it was quite nice and we did have a Lobster night. I do not like to compare the Monarch to any HAL ships for one HAL very seldom does cruises less than 7 days. The short RCL cruises are just another league and they suit their purpose. We went on a 3 dayer on the Monarch last December. It gave us the quicky cruise FIX. That is too bad you had problems with the frig.

Fortuately the first cruise we ever took and it was on the Monarch went really well or we might not of cruised again and discovered HAL:D

Thanks for posting and letting us know how it went.

Thanks for posting and letting us know how it went. I totally agree, they are in a league of their own and served their purpose, you really cant compare the longer cruises to the short ones, they are totally different :) Darn fridge was broken but that did not ruin our 4 days, just disappointed us that it was. Welcome home and Happy Holidays to you and yours :)

The short are great fixes for after a long winter. I have 4 day on a carnival one in April. I will have all winter (live in mountians in VA and it gets cold here) to look forward to spring and a short cruise. I did a 10 on HAL in Nov and that was wonderful. But sometimes I need a quick caribbean fix late fall and early spring to keep me going.
Hal is starting 4-5 day ones from Port Canaverl and Ft. Lauderdale.

Appreciate your review...thanks...and especially your not letting that "darn fridge" spoil your four days.
