When I booked the trip on the 30th of this month I took out the travel insurance from HAL I got the I think it was Platinum one (I think that was what it is called). Today my wife had a biopsy after a suspicious mammogram last week. They determined that there may be some cancer and they will need to go in and take out the area. They said that because it is so small that we could take care of it after we get back on Feb 7th. Then they set up an appointment with the surgeon for tomorrow at 5:30, now I am not sure.
If she does need to have the operation and cannot travel is this something that is covered by the insurance? Hopefully we will not have to cancell (if nothing else this would be a good diversion). Any help would be appreciated.

I am unable to respond to your specific question regarding the insurance, but wanted to let you know how sorry I am to hear about your wife. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers.
I suggest you contact HAL regarding the matter, and please let us know what you find out.

Thanks I will call them in the morning to see what my options are. Really would like to go and spend time with her. Time to really spend quality time and make things count. This really scares me.

Sorry that you have to deal with this.
The Plat. Ins. from HAL will give you 95% of your cruise cost back. However, if you try to reschedule to another cruise, you might also be able to transfer the insurance as well. That way you won't loose your money.
A number of years ago we had to cancel a cruise for my mother, probably within a few weeks of sailing. Once the doctors filled out the forms they did get back their money for the cruise. They were only out the 5% and cost of insurance.
Hopefully after the doctor visits you will still be able to go on your cruise.
All the best.

I can't answer your question other than to contact HAL. My prayers will be with you and your wife. I pray you will be posting with good news and that you and your wife will enjoy your cruise. Trust me the power of prayer from all here on CC got me through a tough medical situation. Barb

If you purchased the Platinum than the first part is not insurance but HAL's protection. The insurance part kicks in at 24 hours prior to departure. If you need to cancel you can do so and get back 95% on your credit card (minus the cost of the insurance) or 90% back at 24 hours -30 days. (If you were outside of final payment date instead of canceling you could rebook on a later cruise and transfer the cost of the insurance so you do not loose anything.)
The good part of this is you do not need to give any reason for the cancellation nor send out any personal information from the doctors. It is Cancel for Any Reason and none has to be given.
I hope your wife is alright.

We go to the surgeon later today and I should know more about our plans. Hopefully we have over reacted and this is nothing ( I sure hope so), but either way her health and comfort are the main focus. This is scary times indeed, never know your true feelings until you are tested.

we were in exactly the same situation January four years ago with DW having mammo indicating small tumor. We were advised that we good go on 10 day cruise and have the biopsy done upon return given the size of the tumor and my wife's age was 68 at the time) She had the biopsy done about 3 weeks after our return from the cruise (she caught a terrible cold and possible noro) it was positive and a lumpectomy soon followed. Post-surgery she had a mammosite (localized radiation). She has been free of any recurrence since.
bottom line- if your Docs say its OK to go on the Cruise , do it- if they say otherwise, that's why you bought the insurance. Plenty of ships in the oceans.
Our best wishes and good luck
