It has been a while since we were in Barbados. But the last time we were there, beside the cruise terminal (which has several shops), there was some construction going on just beyond the security check point outside the terminal. It appeared to be several small buildings.

Does anyone know what was built there? More shops?

We were there last week. There is still construction going on. Not sure what the two buildings will be, but they seem to resemble an office building and possibly a jewelry store. Just a guess of mine.

THere is a small flea market area just outside of the fenced in dock area - sorta like the straw market in Nassau, but on a smaller scale. We didn't go into town since it was a Sunday and were told the stores would be closed. Although, it was later revealed that the stores were open since it was Christmas shopping season.

We were there in Nov. & agree with above poster; not sure what it is. We loved Barbados (one of our new favorites). We had a great time on the Silver Moon catamaran. Has to be one of our best excursions ever.

Gee, they have been working on those buildings for a couple of years now.

Thanks for the update.

We do know about the vendors right outside the terminal. They have been there for years.

We've always enjoyed Barbados and are looking forward to returning on Veendam.

The only thing I ever found in the market area that I liked were some nice beach bags. I got a few that I still use and enjoy.

How far is it to town in Barbados? Can you walk or do you have to take a taxi? Thanks

We were there a few weeks ago - DH walked from downtown to the ship; he said it took him about 15-20 minutes at a meandering pace.

The port area was pretty busy when we were there 1st wk in December. Lots of truck and car traffic. Not very conducive (sp) to walking outside the cruise ship shopping area. Looked dangerous for walkers.

We took the Rhyno Rider inflatable boat snorkling (sp) trip. The snorkling (sp) was over a sunken barge just off shore of a national park about 4 or 5 miles up the coast from the ship. It was a wonderful experience. Lots of beautiful fish, water from 12 to 30 feet deep and clear as a bell. We had a great time.

Incidentally, there were only four people from the Volendam who took that shore excursion. We had four tour staff guys for the four of us who were just great. Give it a look if you like to swim.
