Considering that the regulation was in place at the direction of American authourities, I would guess that the requirement has been lifted on the American end. We have to pass through US customs in Canada before we board the plane so if the bags were not cleared to go, they would be stopped right there.

Why would you think that TSA doesn't know about it:confused:. I'm sure they blessed it or we would still be suffering under this stupid rule.

Now that they have allowed carry on baggage again, Air Canada has removed the second FREE checked bag. Because of the no carry on, you were allowed to check a second bag at no charge. Now there have reinststed the $30 charge for a second bag. Good or bad?

I say it's bad:D. You know A/C....any way to make a buck and they are all over it. I also noticed A/C still mentions that you can only bring a small purse. I don't see that on the CATSA website anymore but I might have missed it.

Pity---- I couldn't resist but I guess you have to be a Canadian of a certain generation to understand that reply.
In answer to your query, it could possibly be because Canadians look to Transport Canada for the rules and not a US government website.

Take heart----the purse is listed under the exemptions to the carry-on rule. You can take either a purse OR a camera bag OR a laptop OR a briefcase, in addition to your carry-on bag. I guess you have to stick your camera in your purse or carry-on.
They have a picture of the type of purse, laptop bag or camera bag permitted.

When we left for Las Vegas on Jan. 5th we got the full treatment. Took 1-/2 hours. Good thing we were early.
As for small purses, that is what I had and had 2 suitcases as that is what WestJet allowed. You should have seen the huge backpacks some had and got away with. Huge laptop bags too minus a laptop.
Yes, they had the Mounties do the final check. It was such a hassle that I swore I would never fly again but we are going in July anyway and yes, to the US.
It really rankles that Air Canada now charges $30 for the 2nd. bag. Normally, my 2 suitcases weigh about 30 lbs each and I could do with a bit less. I am considering getting a 29 inch suitcase. I have a 26 & 20 inch one now. Also, will stuff my pockets pretty good and all this just for spite. Yes, we did book Air Canada but booked it last fall when it said 2 suitcases of no more than 50 lbs. each.

I caught that news item too. Good news for us Canadians. Hate to check my cameras and meds and make-up. My meds for a 14 day cruise would not fit in a small purse. Can't imagine any problem with TSA. It was Transport Canada that ruled. The Americans were allowed carry-ons a couple of weeks ago on flights to Canada but had to check them on return flights to the USA. Now I'm a happy camper for my April business class flight to San Diego where I am alowed to checked bags.:D

Just FYI - if you booked your flight before December 23, 2009 you don't have to pay for the second bag.

Yeah...because they had to comply with the US rules. This was not something that Canada did on their own. There was a gun to our heads.

Is that true? (just asking...) We were on a cruise when the 'incident' occured and I know our dinner mates who were flying AC had to comply with this. BUT - we flew to Chicago on Luftansa and no such rule was in place leaving me to believe that a.) the US was targeting potential issues from the Great White North or b.) this was a Transport Canada decision.

I really don't know how I can convince people of this. At one time the TSA had this info on their website. Try to find it now and you can't. I think it's probably because there was a lot of angry Canadians. There was another long thread here about the airline carry on rules that had lots of info in it. Are you saying that you flew from Canada into the US with a carry on after the incident? You could fly within Canada and within the US with a carry on but not to the US from Canada. If Transport Canada put this policy in place why didn't they make it for flights within Canada?

No - I am saying I flew into Chicago from Munich with carry on. I would think it weird (but I suppose not impossible) that the USA would have a set of rules for Canada and another for the rest of the world. Which leads me to believe this may have been a Canadian thing.

And that's the thing that was so unfair....the rest of the world could bring carry on...Cdn's couldn't. The "incident" didn't occur in Canada. If it was Canada that did that on their own (doubtful) it because we are a bunch of wimps that let everyone walk all over us:eek:.

From what I had read on the TSA website they were insisting on "manual / more extensive searches, etc." of carry-on bags for flights into the US. Other countries may have had that kind of thing already in place but Canada didn't - no real reason to. So to avoid long lines for the searches CATSA decided the best way to keep things moving was to limit the number and type of bags.
Strictly my opinion, though. Anyway, glad common sense finally prevailed and things are getting back to as normal as possible for our northern neighbors.

In Calgary my carry on bag is routinely serched and pretty much everything taken out. I remember one time when the guy searching it felt the need to take out my underware and take a look at it :o. They usually empty all my jewelry out and look at everything. Maybe it's different where you live. A terrorist is not going to pack a bomb in a carry on so I really don't understand the issue. They need to put the manpower on keeping these people off the plane in the first place.

I agree. I think I'm going to put stuff in ziploc bags - so if they decide to take anything out I don't have to worry about small stuff being lost in the shuffle. I haven't flown since last Sept. so I have no idea of what it'll be like this time. I know we're going to have to get up REAL EARLY since our flight is at 6:00 AM. Hopefully it won't be too busy that early so it won't be too bad.

I hear you. My flight in Feb. leaves at 6:30am going to Vancouver. I'm thinking I won't be sleeping the night before:eek:. I find the airport in Calgary is really busy that early in the morning with people trying to get to their destination somewhat early. I'm looking forward to my cruise in Apr. when my flight leaves at noon. That will be a sleep late day for me:D.

Here we go...I finally found something that said these rules did come from the US. I've copied this from the Transport Canada website:
The Government of Canada is strongly committed to ensuring that air travel is safe and secure, but also to ensure passengers have a reasonable level of comfort and convenience during their trips,” said Baird. “The public has been extremely patient and cooperative with the measures mandated by the United States. Effective today, there is a new and practical carry-on rule for passengers travelling to the United States, which upholds important security considerations
Here is the link as well so no one thinks I'm making this up

Actually Air Canada announced the new charge for the second bag either the end of November or early December 2009, with the start date being January 19th. So the change to allowing carry one had nothing to do with this charge for the second bag as this charge started before the change to the carry on rules.

I think they said that you could not take a wheeled carry on. I really wish they would stick to the rules or get rid of them. I think A/C is saying a small purse but no mention of that on the CATSA website. I want to bring my big travel purse in Feb. but I bet if I try this that will be the day they decide to clamp down.
Can you tell me how long he took to get throught security and customs? I think I'll be fine with 3 hours and 40 minutes connection time in Feb. but with the Olympics I'm a bit worried.

We arrived at 11:30 for a 2:15 flight (far earlier than usual) and he said he breezed through and had alot of time to just wait around - but he didn't specify how long. I didn't see anything that prevented wheels on carryon - but he only took one wheeled bag just in case. He said it was very smooth.

I looked at the A.C. website and they are only charging for a second checked bag on flights to the U.S.
Domestic and international passengers are still allowed two free bags of 50lbs. each.
Are they phasing in this charge so it will eventually be on all flights?:(
