We are taking our very first Med cruise (12 days on the Nieuw Amsterdam)
Embarkation is on July 26 and departs on July 27.
We are arriving 2 nights before in Venice and staying an 8 min walk from Piazza Roma (where the airport buses come in)
I was wondering if HAL offers a shuttle to the ship from Piazza Roma?
I read that RC and Costa offer one.
If not, what is the best way to get to the ship from our hotel? We are fairly close to the port.
Would it be unrealistic to walk to the ship from our hotel?

Any info would greatly appreciated :)

There is a roll call for your cruise. Have you checked in there? People on roll calls are usually comparing plans for ship transfers and tours...EM

We're doing the same itinerary on the N.A. in Sep, so I've been looking into this a bit. I haven't heard about any shuttle bus available for HAL.

There is a new People Mover that is expected to open in March with stations at Piazzale Roma, Trancetto Island, and an intermediate Maritime Station which is the closest to the ship terminals. It isn't clear to me that the mid-station Maritime stop will also be opening in March, or if that will come later.

After looking at some video clips that emileg referenced in THIS THREAD (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1121427) , I wouldn't even consider walking from Piazzale Roma to the ship, never mind from a hotel that is even further away. I understand that the Maritime Station will still be a 6 or 7 minute walk from the ship terminals. I've been told that a taxi (land) from P.le Roma to the ship will cost about 10 Euros, plus tip.

We walked from the train station to the port on our honeymoon, and then back after our cruise. At that time, the port ran a shuttle from the entrance to the terminals. This was six years ago, so I would double check that they are still running the shuttle.

We would do it again.

It is usually quite a distance from the port entrance to the ship. We were there in October and the port provided a free shuttle from the port entrance to the ship. Also it is only several blocks from the train station to the port entrance. The train is a quick and low cost way of getting to Rome.

Please disregard my previous post, as I confused Venice with Civitavecchia. That is what I get for not reading carefully. Bob

I've been doing a little research and I found some interesting info on the website for the Venice cruise terminal <Link here (http://www.vtp.it/pages/comeRaggiungerci/dettaglio.jsp?idm=N9TJQI370QEBK450YX34KN08MM3PCGHM&iconaInfo=ico-raggiungerci)> for different ways of travelling to and from the Venice cruise port.

Here is what I posted on my Roll Call:

We've never flown into Venice before, but I've been researching transport options. The HAL transfers are by far the most expensive way to go, $158 per person, round trip.

For two people you can take a land taxi right to the ship for about 40 to 45 Euros ($60-$62), plus tip.

For 4 or 5 people you can get a van for 60 Euro, or 70 Euro for 6 to 8.

The cheapest way would be an ATVO Fly Bus to Piazzale Roma for 3 Euros pp and then possibly an aerial tram to the ship for 1 Euro per person, IF the tram is finished by September. If the tram is not ready by Sep, a (land) taxi from Piazzale Roma to the ship would be about 10 Euros, plus tip. (Since you say you will be "struggling with luggage", that would probably be better for you anyway.) This ATVO bus would be a "coach" with luggage in a compartment below, not a city bus where the bags are inside with owners. Much like the HAL transfer bus would be, I'm sure. http://www.atvo.it/index.php?lang=en&area=23&menuid=35
They run every 1/2 hour most of the day, less often early or late

I didn't look into the cost of a water taxi from the airport, since the ship pier is reachable by land taxi.
