Just remember people who are familiar with destinations tend to say they are "perfectly safe" which is of course nonsense, nowhere is "perfectly safe". Exercise caution wherever you go, & places that seem safe during the day are often not after dark, look fine from the car but try walking there!! Deserted beaches are not a good place if you are alone & especially a female sadly.

Hmmm...my husband is a police officer in Los Angeles and he absolutely refuses to have our group rent some jeeps in Cozumel and drive around the island. After reading this story, I suppose I shouldn't roll my eyes at him.

Hey, even the Pope, with heavy security in place, gets attacked at the Vatican. Always exercise caution regardless of where you live and/or vacation.

@tiffnco - my sister and brother in-law, both in their 40's at the time did that in the early 90's. Were pulled over by police for no voliation and were told they would go to jail if they didnt pay a couple hundred dollars. They paid and never went outside the compound of the resort area again.
