Hey guys!
I'm going on my first HAL cruise in March and I'm looking forward to being on a new cruiseline (to me ;)). Of course, it's always good to be prepared so I'm here to ask for advice. :) I'd love to hear what dishes you guys think are must haves onboard. Appetizers, soups, entrees, desserts, buffet, Pinnacle - what are your favs?
Thanks guys!!

The bread pudding, chocolate croissants, and excellent room service.
And you can bring you own wine on board (but don't try to bring any hard liquor)
Have fun!

French onion soup
Room service club sandwich
Fresh baked breads
Perfect, flaky, cripsy croisssants
Powder sugar donuts
German stollen for the holidays
Chilled soups
All of these are extremely well done.
And I like their house "champagne" (white sparkling using the wine card)

Fruit soups. OMG they are to die for, especially the berry ones. Bread Pudding, Escargot, Lobster, Lobster and Mac and Cheese, HAL's Cinnamon Rolls, Filet Mignon (I think others have called them Steak Diane), Reuben Sandwiches, WAFFLES, Panama Buns, and if they serve it on your ship/cruise; the Salmon Wellington. And so much more I cannot remember them all.

I agree with a previous poster about the Room Service Club Sandwich. One of the best things served on the ship and definetely the best thing on the RS menu. And don't miss the French Onion Soup from RS either.

I really enjoy the 'always available' on the menu every night grilled salmon. I also really enjoy the way they prepare salmon in Pinnacle.
Last March on Eurodam, every time we walked through Lido at lunchtime, I noticed the lasagna. I love it but almost never allow myself to eat it but gave in one day and it was great. So good, I made DH try a piece the next day and he loved it also.

So many great suggestions!
One thing I tasted on HAL that just knocked my socks off, (even though it sounds so ordinary) was the macaroni & cheese appetizer.
Man, oh, man, was that incredible!:D

The eggs benedict station at the breakfast buffet is excellent. There are at least 6 different types available-all yummy! The rack of lamb in the MDR, the hoisin glazed seabass in Tamarind and almost all of the Thai, Indian, Indonesian dishes.

Entrees: I like the lamb dishes
Desserts: Cappucino Bombe (sad to say, I believe no longer offered)
For the Lido: the Asian stir fry station is my favorite for lunches

OMG the baked brie is to die for. The escargot also. The dessert souffles with the hard sauce, I loved the Beef Wellington.
The PG has crab cakes that are amazing as is the white Clam Chowder. Oh! and the tri flavored creme brulee. I can't wait until March. 33 days of amazing food.

Freshly made waffles in the Lido for breakfast with various toppings -- fruits, whipped butter, and even chocolate sauce.
Also love the chilled soups.
On our last cruises -- no Beef Wellington -- No Nasi Goreng -- No Dutch Pea Soup -- No Bami Goreng.

In 2008 there was a similar thread and I kept a tally of how often certain foods were mentioned.
Mentioned most often:Baked Brie
A close second: Escargots Bourginone
Coming in third: Tri flavored creme brulee
Well liked:
fruit creme soups (various flavors were mentioned)
braided pecan pastries
bread pudding
Honorable mention:
Lobster Bisque
Caesar salad
mac & cheese
Rack of lamb (rare to medium rare)
Chocolate Volcano Cake
crab cakes in the Pinnacle
Beef Wellington

Most of the soups I had were excellent - those on top of the list:
Curried Butternut Squash
Duck and Sausage Gumbo
Chilled Mango Gazpacho
Chilled Carrot and Orange Bisque with Cumin
I really liked the thinly sliced salmon (available in the Neptune Lounge and it showed up as an appetizer in the MDR).
Main dishes:
veal cordon bleu
rack of lamb
filet mignon (better in the Pinnacle - MDR cut was a bit thin, but very tender)
Deserts:
Chocolate mousse in brandy snap basket
Chocolate volcano cake in Pinnacle (the souffle may be their signature desert, but I thought the volcano cake was much better)
Chocolate Crème Brulee

Yes, yes, and an emphatic yessss! Add to those the warm flourless chocolate cake in the dining room. Also, the Baked Alaska served in the Pinnacle. Um-um-good. :D
I haven't seen the parmesian crusted chicken listed. Delicious. If you see it on the menu, place an order. The prime rib is excellent.

OH, NO!!
On my last cruise they told me, "It's only offered on longer cruises."
On a 14 day cruise we had it numerous times as our waiter had suggested we could have it "anytime."
They had to go a long way to get it from the freezer or something like that..................we had it the night of Baked Alaska, even. I do NOT like the Baked Alaska. The three times I've tried it, all I've been served was the meringue............ick! Never once have I received any ice-cream. I would take Cappucino Bombe every night.:p

Last year on the Westerdam..we had adjoining balcony cabins with friends..we opened the partition so we had one long balcony..Every day around 4 pm we would order several of the small shrimp..shrimp cocktails, a few cheese plates...and open a bottle or two of Champagne..:D
We would sit out there with the yummy shrimp cocktails..and either watch as we departed from our port or just watch the ocean..it was awesome..and the shrimp cocktails surprisingly tasty, I've never been a fan of small shrimp but these were wonderful with a great cocktail sauce!!
HAL's room service breakfast is great..as is the fresh squeezed OJ in the Lido..and their pasta station is also nice as you can have your pasta just how you like it:D

Any & all of the chilled soups are fabulous. We had two soups on the Oosterdam that we absolutely LOVED that were served only in the Pinnacle Grill - a 5-onion cream soup (BEST soup I've ever had - bar none) and a Mushroom/Cappuccino soup. Both were off the charts!
Also loved the Penne alla Vodka at the Caneletto restuarant, and the lobster mac & cheese at the Pinnacle. The filet mignon @ the Pinnacle is so tender you don't even need a knife.
We never had a bad meal in the MDR - had some really sweet Alaskan King Crab legs on the "O" - and their lobster thermidor was heavenly! Beef Wellington was great!!
Their chocolate Volcano cake is yummy (our waiter called it the best Dam cake ever & we agreed!) and any of the creme brulees & dessert sundaes are awesome. All the rolls & pastries are light & flakey and melt in your mouth!
My mouth is watering just typing this - can't wait to get back on a HAL ship!!! If you go hungry - it's your own fault!!! ;)
Smooth Sailing! :D

Question- Is there a food/grill stand out by the pool on the Noordam that makes hamburgers? On the Azamara and the Oceania there was and it was very popular, just relaxing by the pool with the fresh made hamburgers-simple pleasures. I know, this was about great food but to me, since I rarely have hamburgers, this is like a comfort food question? Thank you.

Dinner:
Lobster and shrimp dip
Avocado & crab tower
Sour cherry soup, mixed berry soup - any of the chilled soups are perfection!
Prime rib & prawns
Desserts (you can see where my priorities are ;)):
Grandma's rice pudding
Sacher torte
Viennese apple strudel
Chocolate chef's hat with chocolate mousse
Banana & chocolate strudel
Any of the fruit sorbets - fantastic!
Oh, and a big NO vote on the bread pudding in the Lido. I was SO looking forward to it after all the comments on here, but it was awful! it was probably the worst bread pudding I have ever had :(

okay, so I'm the one who originally started this thread (and probably the only one who remembers it :D) but I have to add my two cents now that I'm back from my first HAL cruise :)
Breakfast:
Raisin buns
Muesli
Banana bread french toast & zucchini bread french toast - my family is sick of hearing how delicious these were!
Salmon eggs benedict
Lunch:
Soft shell crab sandwich (Lido)
Monterey & almond crusted flounder (MDR)
Triple decker club and chocolate chip cookies (room service)
Dinner:
Lobster and shrimp dip
Avocado & crab tower
Sour cherry soup, mixed berry soup - any of the chilled soups are perfection!
Prime rib & prawns
Desserts (you can see where my priorities are ;)):
Grandma's rice pudding
Sacher torte
Viennese apple strudel
Chocolate chef's hat with chocolate mousse

Glad you enjoyed HAL dining. I'm with you on the bread pudding. I think my favorites are all of the cold soups. I also enjoyed the muesli at breakfast in the Lido and I prefer the sorbets over most of the other desserts.

oh wow, thank you so much, I'm so glad someone actually agrees with me - I thought bashing the bread pudding would be akin to blasphemy on the HAL board  I'm with you, the sorbets really are excellent, just sweet enough and they taste just like the fruit. Yum! I think most people miss out on them in favor of the ice cream and sundaes. I'm a new fan - HAL's food is awesome!

I'm another one that can't understand the raves for the bread pudding. I wouldn't say it's "awful", but I'd give it a very low ranking on my list of favorite desserts.

I will be going on my first cruise in 4 weeks, after hearing about all the wonderful food and the pictures :), I don't think 7 days is enough to try everything I want to try. Thanks for all the suggestions, I have a hard time trying new things because I am so afraid I won't like it, but on the cruise, what a great way to find out if I like things or not.
