Has anyone experienced taking the yellow cabs that are just outside the terminal to Copacabana hotels lately? I understand that they are a lot cheaper than taking ones that you order inside the terminal and supposed to be quite safe and how much do they cost?

regular yellow cab will cost about R$30 - R$40 to Copacabana depending on traffic and time of the day (from 9PM to 6AM is more expensive).
I live here and I prefer the prepaid for R$50 - R$60, I consider them to be safer and more polite.
In any case, never accept people offering you taxi in front of the desimbarcation area. Go to the authorized taxi stand.
